Title: drusilla Smith/Elliot
Post by: cathayb on Friday 06 May 16 14:02 BST (UK)
Any help or advice would be appreciated... I have a huge glitch in my family tree! My Romany great grandma, Drussilla Smith-Elliott (nee Smith but married a Smith) born c.1885, died 1976, lived in Leicester (but obviously travelled), listed as Licensed Hawker on 1939 register, was supposedly born in Scotland. A Romany lady very kindly found her parents and placed them in Cambridge BUT their daughter, Drussilla, married another man in 1917 so it's not her! My Drussilla married William Smith (born 1885) in 1906 in Leicester - I have their marriage cert. I have Drussilla's death cert and she was actually born in Fenny Stratford, Bucks. Her Dad was James Smith and I thought her Mum was Florence but not sure now. I need to know
A) what was her mothers name?
B) why did she attach Elliott to her name?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
her perants names may be wrong as james is not mentioned on her marriage cert infact no fathers name is mentioned.she is a huge brick wall to my friend.we have been searching for years.any help appreciated😀

I guess no birth registration or baptism has been found in that area  :(

Have you got her on any earlier census with a father called James?

They were parents of the other Drusilla you mention from Cambridge.

Fenny Stratford is under Newport Pagnell district and the only Dru* birth between 1885-1887 registered is this one

Druailla Agnes Lord Mar 1886

She is with her widowed mother Lucy in 1901 Newport Pagnell.  Marries a Dickson in 1905 so not the lady you want.

A family tree has her mother as Emily Smith born 1870 and Drucilla born 10 Jun 1885.

I have found that drucilla smith who married William smith in 1906 had a son Riley Elliot Smith born 1910.they married in Leicester but they did travel so could be anywhere.we desperately want to find her birth and dru and will and riley in the 1911 cencus.no luck so far.there may have been other kids born pre 1910 but we haven't found them yet.

I still can't find them either but have found another family tree with later children which may or may not help

Sidney Elliot Smith 1914 Carlisle - birth registration is Smith with mothers maiden name Elliott

Louie Smith 15 Sep 1924 Southport

and 7 more some of which are not listed as may still be living

Not sure if getting a birth for one of the children would give any clues about Drusilla  :-\

Couple more questions if I may

Which child are you or is it your friend descended from?

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?

Every little bit of info helps.

I will have to ask my friend which child she is related to.its her tree you have found them all on.yes and by 1914 she was saying her maiden name was Elliot.
the witness at her marriage were Emily smith and Samuel smith both perants of William.so that dosnt help either!!!
this is a very complicated puzzle.thank you for your time trying to break this brick wall!!!the only child with mothers maiden name as smith was riley smith born 1910.where she got the name Elliot from we have no idea.there may have been other children before 1910 but we haven't been able to find them.
I am going to ask my friend if the future childrens father was definitely William smith as I am beginning to wonder if she went astray??

The child born in 1910 - his birth certificate would at least give an address where they were living at the time.  Then we could check out that address in 1911 to see who was living there.

But it is very difficult with one Smith name let alone two  :(

Does the 1939 register give any more clues?  I can't view the record myself but there are 3 other people as well as Drucilla and William plus 8 more people whose records are officially closed.

Who were the other 3?

What was the occupation for Samuel Smith?

If both parents were witnesses and alive in 1906 then we should be able to find them in 1901 with son William.  It might lead to something you never know!

first of all sorry for not getting back sooner as my computer went on the blink.
druscilla managed to get enumerated twice in 1939 at two different addresses in Leicester!!!one she is on her own in a caravan and the second as her with William and riley born 1908 with a ? mark and William born 1909 with a ? mark there are a number of others living their aswell.it say willian the dad and riley and young William are all in the navy!!!!me thinks they tell fibs.
on the marriage cert which they were married in Leicester 1906 it gives no fathers name for druscilla but Williams dad Samuel was a horse dealer.we have been able to follow Williams line back.its just drucillia we cant find anywhere until her marriage and we cant find her and William and children in 1911.???
