Title: Unwanted Navy photos of HMS glorious and Gloucester in Malta WW2
Post by: brigidmac on Saturday 14 May 16 20:55 BST (UK)
My grandfather .  Thomas Macdermid kept photos of his Navy mates their football team and variuo groupings .as he is not on the photos himself and the men are not named my aunt does not wish to keep them ,but I feel someone may want them .The football teams are HMS bryony 1921-23 and 1923-25

Other friends are posing in Malta where grandad was in 1930 but their hats say HMS glorious and Gloucester

Any ideas what I can do with these photos

.there are also a few of cute kids in sailor costumes

are there any 'associations' for old crew members that might want them?

HMS Bryony (launched in 1917) was sold for scrap in 1938.  There was a corvette HMS Bryony in WW2, so I suspect any old crew members still living would be from this vessel.

I came across a blog which might be worth checking to see if the photographs would interest them:
http://warshipsresearch.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/british-sloop-hms-bryony-1917-in-1923.html

Failing that, the Imperial War Museum might accept them.

What we need is for the mighty "seaweed" to spot this thread - if anyone would know, seaweed would.

All the best
Philip

Hi, regarding HMS Glorious, she was rebuilt as an aircraft carrier in the late 1920's but was sunk by the Scharnhorst off of Norway in 1940 with the loss of 1200 lives.

There is, for your interest, photographs of the crew on the following link, there may be faces to match any of the men on your photographs.

Regards,
Frank.

Thanks Jess .I think those photos are all from the crew when HMS glorious sank. The man on my photo could have been from a crew in the  1920.s he.s posing with a man from HMS Gloucester .
My grandad thomas macdermid was not on those ships .

He was on the hms bryony also cited as HMS hood and HMS Queen Elizabeth  he was in boxing matches on board but I.ve not seen any photos of boxers on ships

Do you have a scanner? If so scanning them and putting them on a public website will ensure that the images are not forgotten. The key is coming up with a good description so that search engines can find them. You can still give them to a suitable society. A local museum may be able to scan them for you.

Wikipedia has an almost full list of RN ships. An expert on adding to Wiki should be able to add some of the scanned images to the ship's page. Also the BBC have websites dedicated to receiving viewers memories of the World Wars.
