Title: Patrick Farrell born abt 1858 Manchester or Ireland ?
Post by: Leeeeeese on Thursday 19 May 16 13:44 BST (UK)
My 2x G/Grandfather; Patrick Farrell was born abt 1858. I’m uncertain as to where he was born – Manchester or Ireland???

Patrick Farrell married Mary Ann Cox in 1878, in Manchester. – his father’s name was given as Michael Farrell (deceased; a joiner).

1861 census - I think I have found him living in Silver Street with his father Michael (mother (?) Julia)  and a number of siblings... His place of birth is given as Hulme Lancashire.

1871 Census – can’t find anything conclusive. There is a Patrick Farrell with Parents Richard & Julia Farrell – could Julia be his mother and have married Richard Farrell (Patricks father Michael was deceased by 1878...)

1881 census – Living in Greaves St, Chorlton on Medlock; (PoB; Longford, Ireland) with wife Mary Ann and two sons Edward & John.

1883 – Living in Crossley Street C-o-M; details taken from daughter’s birth cert.

1891 Census – Widowed; Living in Caroline Street (PoB; Ireland) with brother and sister-in-law; his 3 children are with him.

1901 Census – Living in Caroline Street (PoB; Ireland) with the Mahon family (from memory, they were cousins...)

1909 – His daughter (my Great Grandmother) married; He is not reported as deceased (the groom’s  father was).

Family ‘story’ ::) ::) ::) had it that my G/Grandmother came over to England at the age of 15 (so about 1898) with two of her brothers. The family were Pig Farmers from Kilkenny and the 2 brothers and my G/Grandmother had been sent to market to sell the pigs. They sold the pigs and used the money buy tickets to come across to England...

My G/Grandmother was actually born in Manchester (I have her birth cert)...

I have no idea where the Kilkenny Link is, (the names don’t help) and I’m hoping that if I can find out more about Patrick it will help me to get further with the Farrell Line...

I’d appreciate any help and/or advice...

Many thanks in advance
Lisa

Maybe you should ask for this to be moved to the Ireland board?

Hi eadaoin, thanks for your suggestion. I was unsure as to where I should post, because of the Manchester & ireland link. I have contacted the moderator to see what they think.

Thanks again

Hi Lisa,

I have just moved your post to Ireland, if you find that your research is back in Manchester I can always move your post to Lancashire if required ;)

So a Patrick Farrell born about 1858 father Michael mother Julia possibly from somewhere in Longford.
You would need more.
Were any of his siblings born in Ireland, if so can you find them in 1911 as I believe it is the best for birth place, if not born in Ireland could you find his mother's surname through one of them?

Hi Sinann,

Thanks for coming back to me...and apologies for the dealying in responding...

The only real facts I have are that Patrick Farrell was born abt 1858 he married Mary Ann Cox in 1878 in Manchester (Mary Ann died in 1886) - his father's name on his married record was Michael Farrell deceased; a joiner.

The census information I have pre 1881 is an assumption - I am not certain I've even got the right family... on the 1861 census he [Patrick] has 4 siblings Caroline b1848, John b1853, Michael b1855 and Mary b1860 - the census reports their births as Hulme, Manchester..

Patrick's brother Michael b1855 married an Ann at some point before 1891, on the 1891 census they both have their PoB as Ireland

On the 1901 & 1911 census Michael is married to Winifred with a daughter Angela - on the 1901 census Angela listed as his daughter, on the 1911 she is Angela Geagon step daughter - On the 1911 census Michael is born in County Longford (can't read the town) Winifred is born Co. Galway and Angela is born in Hulme...

So, not very much at all to go with at all...

It's made all the more challenging as my Grandmother (Patrick's grand daughter) always believed her Mother had come across from Kilkenny aged 15 (which I've obviously since found to be untrue...) and an unfulfilled wish of my grandmothers was to visit Kilkenny before she died and raise a glass to her Farrell ancestors...  :-\ ;D

I have long since thought that this leg of my tree may have to remain a solid brick wall... There is obviously some story here...but maybe it's not meant for me to unravel it... Aaaaargh!  ;D

I don't think there is enough evidence yet re the censuses pre 1881.

Do the marriage witnesses give any clues - family members?

Michael, the brother, is born abt 1860/2 in 1901 and 1911 which is different to the one in pre 1881.
He married Winifred Gegan according to Lancs BMD.

It would be worth trying to establish that birthplace from 1911.

There is a Patrick baptised 3rd March 1859 to Michael and Elizabeth Ullagh  ???
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632424#page/163/mode/1up

There is also a Michael to the same couple in 1861.

Sadly, though no townland of residence given, just Granard parish.

Hi Heywood

Witnesses on the marriage cert for Patrick & Mary Ann Cox were John Riley and Ellen Cox. Have had no  joy with the Riley name... Ellen Cox could be Mary Ann's sister or mother (or some other relative...) Ellen Cox (Mary Ann's sister) married a Donnelly...

The Gegan/Geagan name (Michael's 2nd wife) I remember my grandmother talking about... known as 'Old Mother Gegan' she apparently terrified my grandmother (b1910)who as a small child used to hide under the table when she visited and couldn't be coaxed out... she smoked a clay pipe and had a fearsome face/character...my grandmother held that view well into her nineties... Now, whether Michaels 2nd wife was 'this Gegan', who knows... but seems a bit co-incidental... ;)

As I rack my brains, I cannot ever remember my grandmother talking about her grandfather Patrick Farrell when she was recalling childhood memories and stories, so it could be he was deceased by the time she was born or shortly after... (she knew of his existence and that his wife died young, but I don't recall anything else...)

I can see a death record for a Patrick Farrell b1856 who died 1909 in Manchester...but it could be a long shot and not uncover any useful information... :-\

The Farrell-Gegan marriage was in 1899 so if your grandmother was born c1910 then "Old Mother Gegan" is more likely to be someone else.
