Title: Trewin family of Darlington/Clark Townships Ont.
Post by: trewinb on Wednesday 25 May 16 09:28 BST (UK)
I am looking for the burial records, or any other records for that matter, for Thomas and Mary (nee Brimacombe) Trewin, who emigrated from Week Saint Mary between 1841 and 1850 with the Bible Christians. As far as I know the entire extended family went with them including my great-great grandfather Thomas and his wife Ann(nee Kinsman). I have information on Ann and young Thomas, but cannot find any references to where their parents ended up. Thomas (the elder) was baptised in Whitstone, Cornwall in 28 Oct 1792, not far from the family house, Newpark, in neighbouring Week Saint Mary. His trade was given as 'cordswainer'. They may have been members of the Bible Christian Chapel in Whitstone. In the 1841 census Mary's father, John Brimacombe, was still living with them. He may have died i Cornwall or stayed behind. Eventually all of the married children arrived in the Bowmanville area including daughters Ann, Elizabeth and Joanna (the Broads, Slemons and Rundles).

The 1851/52 Census has Thomas "Truwin" age 62 and Mary, age 52, born in England, religion Bible Christian, living in Darlington.  Living with them is a William Truwin, age 3.

The 1861 Census shows Thomas and Mary Trewin (ages 69 and 59 respectively,) Bible Christian, living in Darlington.

Trewin's are scattered around Darlington but I don't know if they are all connected.  There are some in Bethesda, Bowmanville and Mount Vernon.  The problem with the Bible Christians is that they drifted afield after they arrived in Durham like so many of these lesser known affiliations.  My Maternal GGG Grandfather Jared Tyler was the Minister for a few years in Darlington but after that became a ???? in Christ Minister and finally the Episcopalian Minister before he died in 1856.

If you google "Trewin" in Find a Grave you should see the ones you seek.  Also the Durham County Branch of the OGS has many more Cemeteries that have been surveyed and photographed and can probably supply you with everything you need.

Thanks Linda, Lilybell and Don,

The census reports are definitely right for their ages, but I have never heard of William before. As he does not appear in the subsequent census he may have died as an infant. Incidentally, the Broads which appear in both the 1851 and the 1861 census, adjacent to Thomas and Mary, are their daughter Anne and son-in-law William.

I have never heard of a middle name of Jane for our Mary but that doesn't mean it isn't her. Is there any further information? (dates or age or wife of?) Using the search engine I have also found a Thomas Trewin in the Bowmanville cemetery, but without a burial record or inscription information there is no way of identifying whether it is him or his son Thomas. As I know the younger Thomas was buried without his wife, it is likely to be him. Mary is in a different cemetary, which doesn't sound right. Are there no burial records for Ontario? They probably passed away in the 1860's. T least with the census records we can say 'after 1861' but it would be nice to have proper dates.
I have seen the spelling of 'Truwin' before on a land map of Darlington.

Hi,
Findagrave has a Thomas Trewin... husband of Ann Kinsman... in the Bowmanville Cemetery

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=trewin&GSiman=1&GScid=2130678&GRid=132985979&

I don't see another Thomas Trewin in the Bowmanville Cemetery on the Findagrave site.

Durham Surname index shows several Trewin burials, including Mary Jane (the one Lilybell found).  Only the death date is given, so no idea how old she was.

http://www.durhamgen.com/Durham%20Surname%20Index.pdf

Lots of Trewins in the Cartwright Union Cemetery, but none that look to be your Thomas.  Cordwainer is shoemaker, so the census records that LindaGW found look to be your family.  Your Thomas and Mary most likely died after 1861.

Thanks Runkitty,
Thomas in the Bowmanville cemetery was his son. His wife Ann (nee Kinsman) outlived him but spent the rest of her life in St. Stevens, the insane asylum in Toronto.
Odd that there are no records of the elder Thomas's death or burial.

Hello is the following a website that you are connected to www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Trewin

It looks like both Ann Trewin age 37 Bowmanville and William Trewin age 17 were both patients at the Toronto Insane  Assylim.

Still have not found where Thomas and Mary (the elders) are buried or dates of death. The above website indicates both died at Bowmanville.

Nothing found for either of them past the 1861 Canadian census. So maybe that is a good timeline to use in searching for a death record.

Hi Lilybell
Unfortunately the wikitree site is my record of what I know (I am the manager of this Trewin genealogy). I am trying to fill in the gaps through baptism, burial and marriage records which seem more readily available for this period in the UK than in Canada. The only information seems to be the 1852 census and then it jumps to 1901 and 1911. Is there census information available on line for the decades in between?

Thanks,

Bruce

Hi,

Free online Canadian census records

Pick the one you want from the grey bar on the left.

LindaGW found Thomas and Mary in 1861 ... she posted the link to the Library and Archives Canada site so you can see the image.

You can find 1851/2, 1901 and 1911 censuses here for free too

Hello again

Found a couple of things that you might want to check out if you haven't already
www.shebbearvillage.co.uk/biblechristians.pdf

There is some mention of Trewin in the article.

There is a book" A Corner For The Preacher" ( Bible Christians to Canada)
Emigration from Cornwall and Devon
Author Sherrell Brunton Leetooze

I wonder if there exists church records for Bible Christians in the Darlington area that might be able to help with death records. Just a thought.

Thanks Lilybel,

I have one of the articles, the Shebear Bible Christians pdf. It is quite interesting. The Bible Christians were absorbed by the Methodists although many members became Baptists, so records became scattered. The Bible Christian Chapel in Darlington is closed, even Darlington doesn't exist anymore. There is a committee charged with looking after all of the old cemeteries but I believe most of the monuments have already gone. I have tried links on the new Townships so called 'Heritage' webpage but there is very little actually recorded on the early history and settlers. I have always been interested in a place called Newpark in the northern edge of the area because it was the name of our house in Cornwall.

Hello, I was born Susan Bishop & my mother was a Slemon, her father Leo Rex Slemon (known as Rex), born 1903 in Ottawa, his father Edward Trewin Slemon, 3rd of 4 sons of: William Slemon (son of Richard Sleeman) and Joanna nee Trewin. Thank you for confirming that ancestry of Joanna (Trewin) Slemon; I thought I had it but was not sure. I've been on Ancestry.ca about a year; I have found the 1861, 1871, and 1881 censuses for the Slemon's, but it was spelt "Slimon" in 1861, Slemen in 1871, & settled to Slemon in 1881. I mention this because there was a William Trewin age 13 living with them in 1861 (? A cousin of Joanna?, I thought possibly an orphan). There was A dentist, born a few years earlier than my grandfather "Dr. Garnet Trewin", we called him uncle, but probably a cousin of my grandfather. That connection, & the identity of young William on the census are my dilemmas.  Your search for Trewins may be also hampered by the census-takers' spelling, handwriting, and transcription of such, being an unusual name, I have a marriage record where Trewin was taken for "Lewin", so try that.

The records prior to 1867 were poor because there were neither Federal or Provincial Gov't's before 1867, being a colony & not a country yet.  No actual list of those disembarking from ships though by c1907, detailed records.

Thanks Slemon-BishopS
Fortunately the parish records in Cornwall, unlike most other counties, have been freely available for some years now. It was relatively easy to track down Joanna's marriage and other family member's movements around Cornwall through the census and parish records. The original family home, Newpark, is still there in Week Saint Mary. My wife and I have visited the current owners a couple of times. The house is in a beautiful country setting between the villages of Whitstone and Week Saint Mary. It is a shame that burial records were not maintained in Canada in the 19th century as the elder Thomas Trewin and his wife Mary seem to just disappear. I have even read through all of the local newspapers hoping for a mention.

Hello, again. When looking for different cemetery records in the Bowmanville area, I found that Thomas Trewin & his wife Ann Kinsman are buried in "Bowmanville Cemetery Section B", with Thomas Trewin Died May 8, 1896, age 74, and Ann Kinsman died May 19, 1898, age 69.  As far as I know, this cemetery still exists. I have not been to it yet. I am looking for Slemons, but none until 20th century can I find. However, I found a photograph of these Trewins' stone, and the side of the same stone is a Joseph James Trewin, 1864-1923, and wife Mary Fobbes 1863-1903, and these must be your family, Gr-uncle & wife, I figure. Could the elder Thomas Trewin be at same site, at an unreadable stone?

Hi,

Thanks for the information. I am still a little frustrated that Ontario records of the period are so hit and miss. It was so easy ( well relatively) searching the earlier english parish records in Cornwall. I am also looking for his wife Mary (née Brimacombe) and her father John. It is good to know that the younger generation are buried together.
