Hi there,
I am looking for help locating a John Broderick in the 1861/1871 census. In 1881 he is 22, a Shop Porter and living in Usk with his mother Honorah Broderick who is 62 (a Widow) and originally from Bradford in Ireland. In all census returns from 1881 - 1911 John is listed as being born in 1859 in Usk, but I have been unable to find such a record of his birth.
John marries Ada Kenefick/Kennifik on 8th May 1887 in Pontypool, John's father is listed as Patrick Broderick (deceased/labourer). The only marriage i can find for a Patrick Broderick to an Honorah is in Cardiff in 1850 (Honorah Hayes).
If anyone can help me locate John in earlier census returns that would be grand.
Thanks very much!
Keelan

Could anyone recommend a good site for Irish records of BMD's?

Catholic or Protestant?
Try www.irishgenealogy.ie for Civil Registration and Anglican parish records.
Where it says:
The Indexes to Birth Records over 100 years, the Indexes to Marriage Records over 75 years and the Indexes to Death Records over 50 years are available to search on www.irishgenealogy.ie.
The Birth Records Indexes date from 1864 to 1914, the Marriage Records Indexes date from 1845 (1864 for Roman Catholic Marriages) to 1939 and the Death Records Indexes date from 1864 to 1964.
Try http://registers.nli.ie/ for images of Catholic registers (but no index).
In all cases it helps to know a parish, if not a townland.

I believe they were catholics. John Broderick in question married in a roman catholic church in Pontypool, so i'm assuming that his parents Patrick and Honorah who were from Ireland were also Catholic. Unfortunately in the census' they appear in in Wales their birth place is only listed as Ireland, nowhere specific. So I would be looking for a marriage record ideally for Patrick Broderick & Honora Hudnor.
