Title: James Henry Fiander b 1864
Post by: LauraTucker on Thursday 26 May 16 20:46 BST (UK)
Hi all, looking for a bit of help with this chap: James Henry Fiander was born to George and Mary Ann Finder in 1864 in Tarrant Keyneston.

- He appears in the 1911 census as married to Lavinia for 28 years, which I think leads me to think that he is the same James Henry who married Lavinia Thorne in Poole in 1883.

- There is a James Fiander married to Lavinia in 1901 census, Tarrant Keyneston, with sons James H and Walter H.

- However, in the 1891 census he is shown as being married to a Jane, not Lavinia, although she was born in Milborne Port, same as shown for Lavinia in the other two census returns.

I haven't been able to find a birth registration for Lavinia Thorne, so I'm wondering if I'm barking up completely the wrong tree??!!

What about the ages, are they the same as well? It could be as simple as Jane being Lavinia's middle name and the one that she was commonly known as.

And yet when she dies her yob is 1852. ::)

There's a possible marriage for Alfred THORNE and L*vinia PENNY 1872 Wincanton.

She seems to have been born abt 1852 Wincanton.

Can't find her/them in 1881 of course.

1861 Census shows her as Lavera (as transcribed) Penny, dau. of William and Amelia, born 1852 Milborne Port.

So, is looking as if she was a widow when she married James Henry Fiander and that she lopped some years off her age since she was some 12 years older than him!

As said earlier 1871 she is LEVENA Penny born  c 1853 Milborne Port, Somerset, living with her Parents.

There is a Alfred THORNE age 18 living next door with his Family.

But 1881 this Alfred is married to a Maria, same Occp Glover

I wonder if he married Lavinia, they broke up and he remarried then died.

As divorce was uncommon then, perhaps his second marriage was bigamous? Mind you, if the marriage in the first post is correct, so was that of Lavinia to James!

WHat am I missing here?

Lavinia Penny married Alfred Thorne (a different Thorne to the Alfred James Thorne that a Mary someone marries) in 1872

He died

She remarries to James Fiander in 1883

She appears as Jane on a census - either she calls herself Jane sometimes or Lavinia somehow got changed to Jane when the enumerator wrote up the schedule.

Is it more complicated than that?

I think there's a discrepancy between Alfred Thorne's name on the 1871 census (listed as Alfred J Thorne) and what's recorded on the BMD register; the only birth that can fit his age in 1871 is Alfred Thorne (without the J) registered in 1852 in Wincanton.

There doesn't seem to be a death registered in his name in the time period I'm looking at either.

It's annoying that the two marriage registrations have different variations of Alfred/Alfred James too.

I don't really know what to think now!! Thank you for all your help, as ever!

I think the best thing would be to get the birth certificate of one of the children as that would give you her maiden name and hopefully her married name if she was previously married.

I agree with groom a Childs Birth Cert is the best option to figure this one out ;)
