Title: Danygraig Cemetery grave photo request
Post by: lhb51 on Tuesday 31 May 16 02:10 BST (UK)
Would like a photo taken of my great-grandmother's grave in Danygraig Cemetery. Her name was Mary Williams (maiden name Jones).  She is buried in plot 464K.  She died 31 Jan 1911 and was buried 3 Feb 1911.  If anyone happens to be heading out there with a camera, I would really appreciate it.  I'm not sure that there is a headstone on her grave however.  Thanks !

Welcome to Rootschat.    :D

I am presuming you are speaking of the cemetery in Swansea . . . . only one I could find with that name, when I googled.      ;) ;)

I am in Australia so not really helpful, but I have just looked through the cemetery's list of interments and Mary Williams/Jones doesn't show up on either list.  Not one buried in 1911 anyhow.

I presume you are sure you have the right cemetery   Silly question probably.  (fools (that's me) rush in where angels fear to tread)

I found a photo of a grave of some of my rellies on line so thought I'd have a look.

Thanks for looking.  I'm pretty sure she's there. I was at the Swansea Archives two years ago and found her listed on the Danygraig Cemetery burials CD.  Is it possible the list you're looking at is incomplete ?  Is it a list of monument inscriptions only ?  If so, that could indicate she doesn't have a headstone or any kind of decipherable marker.  I'm curious, is there anyone on the list you have in the adjacent plots.....463K and 465K ?   I might recognize the names.

Thanks again for your assistance.  I'm in the USA.  I was there 2 yrs ago, but didn't have enough time to get over to the cemetery myself after finding her listed on the CD.

Hi lhb51

Before sending someone on a wild-goose chase please contact the Bereavement Services for the cemtery and ask if there is a headstone as you have the plot number

http://www.swansea.gov.uk/article/8258/Record-searches-of-municipal-cemeteries-and-crematorium

There is an aerial shot of the cemetery here

http://www.swansea.gov.uk/article/4058/Danygraig-cemetery

view the larger map option and you can zoom in, cross reference with the cemetery layout plan, many plots do not have headstones.

As the cemetery is now closed to new burials, the cemetery dept may have removed or levelled any headstones that may cause injury if they topple.

Hi dawnsh !  Thanks for all that helpful info.  No, it's no point sending anybody out there without knowing for sure yet what's there. I suspect there isn't a grave marker for her.  I will pursue your suggestions.  If I can zoom in and take a looksee myself, that would be cool !

Thanks again !

Sorry for the misunderstanding - I didn't find my rellies in that particular cemetery - just that it was possible to find headstones on line for some cemeteries, and your cemetery does have a list of headstones - 96% photographed according to their site.

Plenty of others of mine didn't have headstones nor even recognisable plots,  so dawnsh's  comment is a good one.

Cheers,

Wiggy

Hello wiggy !  No problem.  I apologize for misunderstanding your post.  Glad to hear you have found some rellies' grave  pics online.  I have found one on findagrave site myself.  It's a great site and has a large database.  However, I noticed for Danygraig Cemetery it has about 1300 entries.  But I happen to know there's over 21,000 burials there.  But I really appreciate your help.  Thanks...g'day !

I have found the grave for you! However there is no Grave stone or marker just a flat piece of grass,I can confirm that i have found the correct plot as the grave next door is named 465K in the names of Wedlocks, Louisa who died in 1896 and her husband who died in 1904. They are registered as being buried in plot 465K. I also found a grave with the marker number 454K which directed me to your ancestors plot.
I have also found that in plot 464K besides Mary Williams is also an Ernest Williams who was buried  1/1/1896 of Malvern Terrace Swansea. ref 22003. I include the photo of the grave next door and the actual plot of your ancestors. I hope this is of help to you.
Cheers Ronnie J Williams

Hi ronniej !  You have done a great job !  Thanks so much !!  At least, now I know for sure there is no grave marker in 464K.  But you also found something new for me.  Her son Ernest is also buried there.  I did not know that before.  Thanks again !!  And the pics came out great !
