Title: Convict Brereton help.
Post by: BlueFire on Monday 13 June 16 09:26 BST (UK)
Hi

I have found a convict who I think might be in inlaws tree. His name is David Brereton. He was transported on the Rodney in 1851 with his brother James. I'd like to know who he married to see if he is the same David, in my relatives tree.

Thanks

Was there any documentation in the anc' tree's? With death cert's or marriage? As its not my tree, I was not going to buy the certs, but I don't want to get it wrong either. I think I'm satisfied that David married to Mary Cornell, is the convict.

I was trying to trace George Brereton, the son also. I have not found his birth place and I'm thinking the mothers name might be spelt different or maybe Brereton is spelt different.
I've looked in NSW and South Australia and VIC BDM. I'm not have much luck.

Thanks for your help so far. ;D

BDM VIC Index  marriage
1871 / 614 BRERETON David   m. CORNALL Mary Ann

births
1872 / 6674  BRERETON Lilia       parents David / Mary Ann COLONEL
1874 / 149   BRERETON Ernest     parents David / Mary Ann COLONEL
1876 / 151   BRERETON Herbert   parents  David / Mary Ann COLONEL

..death notice for Mary Ann relict of David BRERETON late Glenpatrick...m/o..
John.......George....Hannah (Mrs DUVANEL)
David.....James......Florence (Mrs FERGUSON)
Randall...William....Lillia (Mrs PRESTON)....and Bert................age 82 years  buried Box Hill

Age 82 years at death gives birth ~1839. Mary Ann would be 32 at marriage 1871.

BDM VIC death
1935 / 14104   DUVANEL Hannah parents David BRERETON / Mary Ann CORNWALL
died DROUIN    76 years (b. ~ 1859)

1940 / 18211   BRERETON Randall   parents  David BRERETON / Mary Ann CORNELL
died Swan Hill  72 years (b. ~1868)

1947 / 20973 BRERETON William  parents  David BRERETON / Mary Ann RANDALL
born Glenpatrick  died Maryborough  77 years (b. ~ 1870)

Hannah, Randall and William are born before 1871 marriage of David and Mary Ann. Mary Ann is ~32 years at marriage, and unlikely to be her first marriage at that age.

You need to see this record -
1876 / 151   BRERETON Herbert   parents  David / Mary Ann COLONEL

to see how previous issue are named. I suspect that the marriage details will  be edited by informant to be earlier than 1871.

Children might all be born to David and Mary Ann, or might include child / children that Mary brings to this marriage.

Will / probate files to find PROV Victoria -
BRERETON George, miner, Glenpatrick  d. 13 Jul 1943
BRERETON James , miner, Glenpatrick  d. 13 Jul 1935

I found the death, BRERETON   Given names George   Event Death Father's name / Spouse's family name BRERETON David Mother's maiden name / Spouse's given name Mary Ann (Cornell)   Reg. year 1943   Reg. no18786. They are the right parents to George. I have found other deaths with the correct name of Cornell also.

Well that is weird, as the death of George, says David is the father and Mary Cornell the mother. Its not uncommon for the wrong names to be on the "info" part of the search. I found no births for Mary Anne Cornell under Reeves either.

If Mary Ann did Marry John Reeve 1854 and then lived with David Brereton, George 1858 would still be their Son.
As the Tree said John Reeve died 1869 then they may have Married after being informed of his Death.

I have no access to Victorian BMD Fiche soo you may have to scout around.

David Brereton Snr died early July 1897 at the which is now known as the Supreme Court Hotel in Maryborough Vic after a day of drinking with friends, David Snr was in Maryborough on his monthly stores, supply run. He had too many drinks and went up to bed where he apparently knock over a candle that fell onto a bed and smoldered throughout the night. David Snr died from smoke inhalation this was taken from the coroners report. David married Mary Cornall and his son married a Mary Caldwell it got a bit confusing. I am a descendant of his daughter Florences who married William Ferguson.  regards Lynne Baker nee Harris ;D :D
