Title: Marjorie, Newlands DOB 24/4/1879
Post by: KayeG on Tuesday 14 June 16 00:01 BST (UK)
Can anyone discover what became of Marjory?
She married 11/12/1894 in Dornoch aged 17 yrs according to the MC but my maths make her more like 15 years.
Her husband, George Foxton, remarried a few years later describing himself as a single man.
I have been unable to find a DC or births for any children.
Would appreciate any help.

Marjorie, Newlands DOB 24/4/1879

You have a comma after Marjory so was her surname Newlands as I can't find an 1881/1891 matching the profile

How old was George on the marriage cert - 1901 has a George Foxton b 1866 married to Agnes which would make him 13yrs older than Marjorie

Scotlands People shows a Marjorie Newlands marriage between 1895-1901. Have you already viewed and discounted it

CaroleW the comma was a slip of my finger. Sorry.
George Foxton was born 1865 in Stokesley so yes he was quite a bit older than Marjory.
Re a second marriage for Marjorie on SP, no, I haven't seen it.  Will have a look now.
Thank you so much for your quick response.
I have even been into RH looking for this woman with no joy.

CaroleW, have just looked at SP & you're right!  That is her, remarrying & describing herself as a spinster! What on earth was going on up there?

Was the 1899 marriage , for Marjory Newlands , to Hugh O'Neill(a pedlar ?) ?

Possible match here http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp , with children , and an application for poor relief.

Yes Ev,  she married Hugh O Neil & yes the family you cite here is her family & you've found cave dwellers!  I've read about them & seen photos but first time they've come up in my searching.

Re her parents on the 1899 marriage:- Father John Newlands, Hawker. Mother Isabella Newlands MS MacArthur?

The libindex information may be the wrong , although Marjory's birthplace is given as Lybster(c1876) which I think is in the Parish of Latheron.

I have Marjory's birth as 24/4/1879 at Occumster, Clyth which is Latheron.

Occumster, Clyth is very close to Lybster on the map , that Libindex information may still be relevant.

Yes, I think that Libindex is very relevant & am certain that this is the same family.
How to find out if the marriage to Geo Foxton was dissolved is my next problem otherwise they may both have been bigamists! X

On the same topic:- bigamy - George Foxton pedlar, shows up on the 1891 census, in a common lodging house in Horsemarket Close, Kelso as a married man aged 26.
The 3 entries for Gill underneath his name may be his in laws through a sister's marriage.
Can anyone please help me spot a marriage earlier than 1894 for George Foxton?

Using the second person forename function on SP this could be Marjory on the 1911 Census ?

Aberlour , Banff.
Hugh O'Neill 36
Marjory O'Neill 32
Thomas O'Neill 11
Mary O'Neill 9
Catherine O'Neill 6
Hugh O'Neill 4

Also a death -
Marjory Newlands(other surname NEIL / McArthur) 1965 New Deer , Aberdeen , born c1879.

That death will not be available online untill next year.

Well done Ev! I think that is very likely to be her.  Have you any idea how to check divorces, not that I think they would have had the money to pay for lawyers etc.

I've searched on "Newlands divorce" but could not find anything relevant.

James McArthur / Marjory Newlands(other surname showing as O'Neil) marriage 1942 Inverurie , Aberdeen.

I am looking through the McPhee family history and I know that the newlands married into the McPhee family at some point. I wondered if you have any information on any marriages to a McPhee from your search?

I also wondered if Newlands travelled to wick and settled there due to the marriage into the McPhee clan.

Thomson 2608, what is your timescale for Newlands/Mcphee marriages & which of the many branches of McPhees?  As you’ll have seen from this chat, I’m looking at the 1890s but I know of two sisters, C1930s, & one married a Newlands & the other a McPhee but all lived in Perthshire.  Good luck with your search
