Title: Information on Mary Smith, born 1903 in Westown, Tramore, Co. Waterford.
Post by: Fenor on Sunday 19 June 16 16:09 BST (UK)
Hi. I am new to RootsChat and this is my first post.
I am trying to find any information about my aunt, Mary Smith who was born in Westown, Tramore, Co. Waterford on the 28th. November 1903. She was one of a family of 10.
Her father's name was Michael Smith and her mother's name was Johanna (Power) Smith.
The only thing I know about Mary was that she married an Englishman whose christian name was George but I don't have his surname. I don't know whether she got married in Ireland or England and to my knowledge they had no family.
I was told by my father, also Michael Smith, just before he died that his sister Mary had been buried in Tramore Churchyard opposite the main doors of the Church but without her marriage name it is not possible to locate the grave or find any information.
I would appreciate if anyone can help me with any information regarding my aunt Mary Smith please as I am trying to carry out my father's wishes to have her grave found and marked. Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. The families linked by Hallmark are related but not the correct family.
The Church was the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Tramore.
The family linked by Gaffey is our family and is correct. The only thing incorrect in this census is that there was a daughter Alice, born 1901 missing. (Maybe she wasn't in the house.)
Mary Smith that I am trying to find information about was the daughter and Michael Smith a son was my father.
I would appreciate any further information regarding that link and who Mary married.
Thanks. Fenor.

Seems strange that Michael Smith should be the son in law of Patrick Kirwan
Patrick is aged 40 in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Waterford/Islandikane/Westtown/1759945/

and 73 in 1911 with grandaughter Alice Smith

obviously upped their age as old age pension had just come about

Hi Dathai. Thanks for your post. The families you show from the 1901 and 1911 censuses with relations to the Kirwan family is not my family. The post by gaffy with the link to the 1911 census for the residents of a house 3 in Garrarus (Islandikane, Waterford) is my family. I am trying to find out what happened to my father Michael's sister Johanna in later years when she got married and where she was buried as I explained in my original post since I don't have her married surname.
I appreciate your help and time.

Bit of confusion with the names, Mary or Johanna?

You say the grave is unmarked, so it can't be found via a headstone.
And you don't know George's surname but do you know if he is buried with her or even approx when they married?
Do you know when she died?

Hi Sinan. It is Mary Smith. I am very sorry for my mistake in putting down Johanna in my last post.

George wasn't buried with her. My mother told me she could remember him coming back to Tramore from England just after Mary had died and leaving money to have a headstone put up on her grave at her home place. (Which never materialised.) He then returned to England.

I am afraid I can't answer any more of your questions. I don't know when she got married, how she met George or when or how she died. This is the problem of course!

Thanks for your time in replying to my post. Fenor.

Without her surname and/or when she died, I can't see anyway to find her grave.
The only things I can think of are
a. Other family members (try and trace children/grandchildren of siblings). Facebook perhaps or the Cemetery masses poster earlier if you can attend.
b. A death notice in a newspaper that would hopefully mention the Smith name as well. https://www.irishnewsarchive.com/
c. Very local knowledge, for example sometimes a priest will note down on a baptism who a person married, when it happens it is usually when the person marries in a different parish and sent for a letter of freedom to their home church in order to marry so contacting the church where she was baptised might be use full.

Do you know if she lived in Tramore long before she died, Tramore has a local community radio station, it has a facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/TCRfm/
Retired postal workers can be a gold mind on local families, my mother recently astounded a local historian by knowing the story of every child who wrote an essay for the folk lore collection from the local school, which died young, who they married, who moved away and so on, she is several years younger than any of those children.

Hi familyroutes, Sorry for the delay in answering. Just like to say thanks for interest and help. It looks like without her married surname I won't have any luck. Thanks again to all the people who tried to help me. Fenor.
