Title: William Irving Alsop, son in law of Alexander Thompson
Post by: jeanlit on Monday 27 June 16 21:17 BST (UK)
I have found the following in the New York Death Newspaper extracts 1801-1890 (Barber collection):
This was typed and is complete.

Friday 17 Feb 1843:
Thursday. Staten Island. Capt Alex'r Thompson in 75y son in law William Irving Alsop 30 Beach St
----
I have also found that Alexander Thompson was buried in the Trinity cemetery, Manhattan.

To confirm that this is the Alexander Thompson I am after, I have to find out more on William Irving Alsop.

Can anyone help please?

Because I haven't had any replies and from various things I have found, I'm wondering if Alexander Thompson's son-in-law was actually William Irving HYSLOP, not ALSOP.  (Newspaper error ?)

There was a William Hyslop Thompson, who I believe could have been Alexander Thompson's grandson.

Can anyone help with this man please?

There is a William Hyslop Thompson born 1840 Liverpool Lancashire  listed UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates.

Looks as if this William died at sea 10 September 1880 (Merchant Marine, At Sea, Great Britain)
The death listed for William Hyslop Thompson - New York Evening Post - 10th Captain William Hyslop Thompson - 40 years s Capt W C of this city.

(Presumably that was S = son of Capt W C Thompson who was living in New York in 1880)

Sandra and willsy:  Many thanks for all your information which has tied in the family.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to get into http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html   without a password.

The 1851 Census – Liverpool:
The ages of the parents and children all add up to what I know.  (The only exception is their eldest child, Alexander Thompson, who should have been 15 or 16 in 1851 and was probably away from home.)  Their last child was born in 1852 and the mother died soon after.

- Mary E K Thompson later married J C H Bachmann in New York (which ties in with Sandra’s post about Mary McCammon Thompson’s passport application) JCHB was born in Germany but became a naturalised US citizenship in 1871 (William C Thompson was a witness)

-William Hyslop Thompson drowned at sea in 1880;  he had married Charlotte Ellen Kemp in 1874 in Liverpool.  To make things confusing, they had a son born about 1877 who they named William Corscaden Thompson (presumably after his grandfather ?)

-Kate McCammon Thompson (Sandra found her buried in the same plot as her father – Lot 11895, Section 179)

-Sarah Sands Thompson (named after one of the vessels her father was captain)

Willsy has found the death of Margaretta Hyslop which links in with Alexander Thompson.  Now I have her name, I can try to find where she was born.

Willsy also found the notice in the Belfast newsletter of the death of Alex Thompson, which also ties in.

As some of the family were ship's captains, they were quite mobile, which makes things a little complicated, but with all these leads, they are coming together.  Again, many thanks.

Jean

P.S. While I have been writing this, Sandra has posted the link to the family's connection to ships.  Thanks - I'm a bit confused about posting links.

I have in the past researched a Thompson family of mariners/shippers out of Liverpool. Cornelius Thompson was the big cheese and might be the brother of Alexander or William. After great riches, he/they fell into financial distress. Quite a number of newspaper articles available on him that I can forward.
