Title: Parents of Gwladys Hughes
Post by: teulucooke on Wednesday 29 June 16 14:53 BST (UK)
I am looking for the parents of Gwladys Hughes who was born on 24/02/1897 in West Derby, Liverpool. On her birth certificate her mother is named as Mabel Sarah Hughes, but there is no father named. On her marriage certificate her father is named as Owen Hughes deceased. On the 1901 and 1911 census, Gwladys was living in West Derby with John Henry Williams, born in Bethesda, and Sarah Jane Williams, born in Amlwch, and is listed as 'daughter'. On the 1939 census, Sarah Jane is widowed, and her date of birth is shown as 01/01/1873, but I am unable to trace a birth record for her in the Anglesey Archives. I cannot trace a birth record for Mabel Sarah Hughes either, and there are no family members left who would be able to help. Anyone able to help please?

It is not unusual for someone who is illegitimate to make up a fathers name for a marriage cert.

Two questions spring to mind here. Was MAbel Sarah (the mother on birth cert) married or single when Gwladys was born, I wonder.  And, is the Sarah Jane Williams who calls herself mother on the censuses the same person as Mabel on the birth cert? Or was Gwaldys brought up by others who called her "daughter"

Just looked at the censuses you refer to .
What makes you think that the Gladys WILLIAMS on them, with parents John and Sarah Williams, is actually the G(w)ladys Hughes that you have the birth cert for?  SHe is clearly Williams on both censuses.

1901
Everton
John Henry Williams 24 railway porter bn Wales
Sarah J 27 wife bn Anglesey
Gladys 4 dtr bn Liverpool

birth

There is a birth of a Sarah Jane Hughes in Llandyfrydog,Anglesey in 1873(NorthWalesBMD),and,of course the possible(usual pairing issue) marriage of a John Henry Williams to a Sarah Jane Hughes in West Derby in 1900.

In the 1891 census there is a Sarah J Hughes,born1873,Llanfechell(near Amlwch),daughter of an Owen Hughes in Walton Lane West Derby. It is not clear that this is the same Sarah Jane as the Llandyfrydog one.

With info found, think it very unlikely they are the same Gwladys/Gladys.

This is the only one that fits birthdate, on all FreeBMD, which you have.

Births Mar Qtr 1897
Hughes Gwladys W. Derby    8b   359

Do you have an address on birth cert or any other clues that may help

Thank you all for replying. Gwladys was my husband's grandmother and we have her death certificate which shows her date of birth. There is only one record of a Gwladys born on that day, and she is Gwladys Hughes. My mother in law always said that her mother's maiden name was Gwladys Williams and she had family in Cemaes. On the 1939 census, Sarah Jane's youngest son is named William Williams, and my husband remembers that his grandmother, Gwladys, had a brother living with her and his name was Billy Williams . My theory is that Mabel was the birth mother and Gwladys was brought up by Sarah, probably a relative.

I'm not sure this adds much but there is a birth registration for Sarah Jane, daughter of Owen Hughes and Ellen Lewis born 2 Jan 1873 at Llanfechell, Llandyfrydog.

Other children born to the same parents, all at Llanfechell are:
Barbara Ann - 1 Oct 1875; Ellen Louisa - 30 Apr 1869; Hugh Lewis - 24 Aug 1865 (twin); John Owen - 30 Dec 1866; Maria Jane - 24 Aug 1865 (twin); Rhoda Louisa - 30 May 1871.

Born at Llanbadrig to parents Owen Hughes and Ellen Lewis were:
Mary Catherine - 17 Sep 1858 and William Richard 20 Nov 1861.

But no sign of a Mabel!

It seems Owen Hughes and Ellen Lewis married at Llanbadrig 3 Mar 1857.

Sorry, I still don't follow why you think the Gwladys Hughes birth cert is your ancestor, if she was Gladys Williams all her life. Have you checked the birth for the Gladys Williams in 1897 West Derby? That looks like the birth for the daughter of the John and Sarah, and I'm not sure you can look elsewhere unless that has first been ruled out.

Has you got a copy of mother in law's birth cert? That would confirm her mothers maiden name. (you say she said her mums maiden name was Williams, but the cert should show it)

I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Gwladys Hughes and Harold Hobson (my husband's grandfather), signed by Gwladys Hughes and stating her father's name as Owen Hughes deceased. If her mother (or the woman who brought her up) was Mrs Williams and she had half siblings with the surname Williams, then she would probably want to be known as Gwladys Williams.
