Province:
Ontario
District Number:
58
District:
Durham East
Subdistrict:
Hope
Family listed as Brunelle
( This has been suggested as Runnals as an alternative ).
When looking at the image, Christian names, we think, we can pick out
Richard
Maggie
Maud
Martin
Howard
Bruce
Victor ?
the remaining child, we are having problems with.
It is listed on the Record, as Sarah, son ?
Thanks

Could you perhaps scan in an appropriate snippet from the census entry image?

They are Runnells in 1901, when Richard, Margaret, Martin and Cecil (aged 12) are still living in Durham East.

Looks like Cecil to me. Fits with what China found for 1901. I think "Victor" is correct too.

Thank you China and RK.
Cecil fits with a Death,8 Jun 1902, Durham, Ontario, Canada,
Cecil Wilfred Runnalls, born c 1889.
This corresponds with the census image, for 1891.
I cannot find a Birth, to fit with this Census record and Death Record, for Cecil..
I have found one for a Norman Runnalls, 1 Sep 1888, Durham, Ontario, Canada , Father's name:
Richard Runnells
Mother's name:
Betsy Greenaway
( Could this be Cecil ? )
There is also a Birth record for a Norman Runnion , 28 Sep 1881, Durham, Ontario, Canada
Father's name:
R Runnion
Mother's name:
Betsy Gunnoway
On Anc., but when I looked at the image, I think, parents, are Richard Runnals and Betsy Greenaway ?
When I looked at the image for the 1881 census, for Richard and Betsy and children, on Anc. I couldn't make out any names on the image.
Betsy, was his second wife ( 1874 - 1888 ).
First wife, Mary Martin (1866 - 1872 )
Third wife Margaret ( Maggie ) (1890 - )

Victor Richard was married in BC

So, Nathaniel Bruce is the Bruce in 1891 and the Nathaniel B in 1881. You had a question mark next to the name Victor in 1891. This confirms that the name is correct. :)

The 1901 census shows Cecil's birth date as Sept 1 1888, so it appears that Norman and Cecil could be the same person.
You most likely have all of the following, but mentioning it anyway.
You found:
Norman?, born September 1, 1888
Parents: Richard Runnells? (Farmer), Betsy Greenaway?
Informant: R Runnells, Hope, Durham
Registered: November 10, 1888
Betsy Greenaway? Runnells
Died November 1 1888, 42? years, Farmers Wife, born England
Congestion of lungs?, 2 months
Informant: Richard Runnell?, Hope, Durham
Registered: December 1, 1888
1901 Hope, Durham, Ontario Census
Cecil Runnells, born September 1, 1888, age 12, born Ontario
Head of family and his wife: Richard (Farmer) and Margaret. Family's religion: Methodist
Cecil Wilfred Runnalls?, Farmers Son
Died June 8, 1902, age 13, born Canada, Hope, Durham
Religion: M
I have one family in Ontario that either changed some of their childrens' names after their births were registered, or there were errors with the registrations as several children were registered with "incorrect" first names. (I hope that makes sense.) ::)

:)
thank you RK for the info. and the links.
I had Nathaniel Bruce's info and your help, confirms my findings. wife I found, was Elizabeth Latchford, m 1906 Manitoba. Twin sons born to the couple, sadly, only lived a few months. ( that's as far as I have gone with him at present ).
I had found a possible marriage for Victor R and was digging around for more info, as I think his wife Mabel Berry, is the sister of Clara, wife of Howard.
The Berrys, being neighbours in Port Hope, Ontario on one of the censuses.
I appreciate all your help, my sight impairment restricts me on so many documents.
Thank you too Lisa.

Glad to help!!
I completely agree that some images are very hard to read. A second (third, fourth....) pair of eyes is always helpful.
Thankfully, many documents can be found on more than one site. Some scans are better than others!! Many Canadian records are available on the Library and Archives Canada site (Free). There are other free sites you can check as well. :) .
As for this family, it seems that they like to give their children 2 names. It makes a lot of sense that Cecil would have another name as well.

Brandon Weekly Sun newspaper from July 4 1907 has short note that Mr and Mrs Richard Runnells have been visiting their son Mr Bruce Runnals. They left for Edmonton this morning.
July 30 1908, same paper has a note about Mr Richard Runnells of Port Hope, visiting his son Bruce Runnells of 3rd Street.
Brandon Weekly Sun, Jan 16 1908, has the death of the little twin boys, John Reginald and Clarence Richard ... very sad :'(. 4 months old... bronchitis.

Note in 1925 Brandon paper of J N Merrill selling his grocery business on 3rd street to N Bruce Runnells and company.
1928 - a note about Mrs N. Bruce Runnells, formerly of Brandon, has come to Brandon to visit, but is now going back to her home in Saskatoon.

Thank you so much, I'm busy entering all this on my tree and busy searching and best of all finding. :)
Have made contact with a relative of Howard, so I could be finding out more. ( They had submitted an alternative to the mis transcribed surname on a census, after his marriage ). :)
Thanks again, I am so very grateful for your help and the time you have spent helping.
( So sad about the twins, all death is sad, but when it's children, it tugs my heartstrings. )

Hi,
Just looking at the 1921 census image for Victor and family - in Edmonton. A..y has mistranscribed this as Buemda. Not surprising... the writing is pretty awful :). Someone has submitted "Runnells" as a name correction. Not sure if it is the person you are already in contact with. If not... this is another avenue to pursue.
Victor 37
Mabel 33
Harry 9
Ferris age scratched out
Gordon age scratched out
Roy 4
kids all born in Alberta.

Hi RK.
No, I haven't followed up on Victor yet.
I got carried away, with Betsy Greenaway and her roots.
Father Nathaniel, mother a Pethick.
Found Pethicks emigrated to Huron too.
Also some of my Inches emigrated there too and an Inch marries a Runnalls in Ontario.
I will go and look at Victor. Thank you. :-*
:) Yes, it is, have had a reply and waiting to hear back again.
AND I forgot to say, I googled Brandon Weekly Sun and found the pages for the newspapers. I had a quick look through some of them, but need OH's help with the headlines, but found the advertisements interesting too. Bookmarked that link and sent the link to my OH, for future reading.
