Title: Cambridgeshire: William BRIDGEMAN, born c1842
Post by: BAC3 on Saturday 02 July 16 20:23 BST (UK)
Hello,

This gentleman would probably be better labelled an "old lag", having spent the best part of his life, at least until probably 1884, as a prisoner.   I have searched for family details but have had little success, neither in newspaper reports of his wrongdoings nor in his prison records.  I have two census entries, 1871 as "Wm. BRIDGEMAN" and 1881 as "W.B.", which state Cambridgeshire as place of birth and that he is married.  There are two other references:

(1):   In 1871 he confirmed his mother, Mrs BRIDGEMAN, lived at Fields Court, St.  Andrew
         the Less, Cambridge: and

(2):   When he was released from prison in July 1877 he was returning to 6 Nelson Street,
         Cambridge.

The William BRIDGEMAN entry in the 1851 Census, HO107/1760/674, p.8 is a possibility.

I wonder if someone could help in establishing family details please, both immediate and marriage.

Thank you,

Tony Cocks

Thank you keyboard86,

The reference is almost certainly to his mother.......which then ties in very neatly with the 1851 Census reference.  Making good headway now ::)

I think Andrew's age of 14 in 1881 may be an enumeration error, as he was also 14 in 1871 and 4 in 1861. Mary was a widow in 1871 but Andrew's parents in 1861 were James 44 and Mary Ann 40 Bridgman. William wasn't at home in either 1861 or 1871.

Just to add a couple of details to the baptism suzard found - it took place at Holy Trinity Church, their address was White Hart Yard, King Street and James was a tallow chandler.

bedfordshire boy, suzard and Selina,

Thank you for your postings.......the family details now seem well established up to 1881 , except for two items.......William BRIDGEMAN's marriage and life post-1884 need to be confirmed.   Nevertheless it has been an extremely successful exercise.

Thank you all once again.

You have no idea of any names or children??

I have eliminated quite a few marriges between 1861-71
