Title: Peter Tait
Post by: heathera1940 on Monday 04 July 16 13:39 BST (UK)
Hi there
I am looking for any info as to what happened to Peter Tait and his wife Rachel after 1901. Peter and Rachel were born in Berwick on Tweed Northumberland . Peter  b 1849 and Rachel  bc1850. I cannot find a marriage for them. Their first child Margaret was born in 1874 in Berwick . The last two children  being born in Eyemouth. Rachel in c1887 and Robert c 1891. They are living in Eyemouth on the 1901 Scottish census. I cannot trace anything after that
Any info please would be appreciated
Thanks Heather

Hi Heather

You might get some clues on possible marriage for parents from children Rachel and Robert's birth certs in Eyemouth, Berwickshire. Scottish birth certs should include date and place of parents' marriage.

The marriage may have been 'irregular' and therefore there may not be a record of it (see www.gla.ac.uk/schools/socialpolitical/research/economicsocialhistory/historymedicine/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/marriage/ for background).

What was Rachel's maiden name from children's birth entries?

There is a possible death for Rachel showing on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Rachel Tait/Chrystal aged 61 died in Eccles, Berwickshire in 1911.

Not sure if this would fit with what you have for her. If she did die in Scotland, her Scottish death cert should include her parents' details, if known to the informant.

If the Taits remained in Scotland, there is also a possible death for Peter, apart from the one that Trevor has mentioned above. There is a Peter Tait death in 1916 in Eyemouth, Berwickshire born c. 1849.

If that is the right death entry for Rachel, you have these possibilities:

Birth https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2NWB-J93
Christening https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J9VM-JP1
1851 census https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKV6-DM1M
1861 census https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7KZ-PXN

You may already have this  ;) Apologies if so.

Hi Monica
I note your reply re Doran family. I have an Ellen Doran in the Ireland census of 1911, 49 Ramelton Road, Letterkenny, Co Donegal. Others in the household- Ellen and Hannah McDaid(Devitt). Do you think this Doran is connected to the Doran which you have referred to Rgds Edward Rowland

Hi Edward

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

From little I know of my Dorans (Dorrington etc), can't see an obvious connection unfortunately. Wish I could as I wander the genealogy world as a lonely soul with my lines  ::)

Again thanks to you all

Just to let you know the Peter that died in Eyemouth was the right one and the Rachel in Eccles was right to. Her maiden name was Chrystle. Her  death certificate states she was not married to Peter Tait
Another problem solved
