1903 death gives age as 64 which would make year of birth c1839 :-\

Could they be father and son with identical names? born 1811 and 1839 respectively?
Do you think he owned a shop in Sydney and leased it to someone else, or worked in it himself?
Bit of an impossible journey to work Singleton - Sydney back in those days. Wouldn't even like to have to do it these days - unless I owned my own helicopter :P :P :P They are nearly 200km apart.

It seems he wasn't in Sydney, but in Goulburn, so further still.

By the way jamjar, on the burial of Lewis Henry WORMS in 1903, they give his mother as Ethel Elizabeth WORMS. But she was the wife of his son Henry and not the wife of his father Henry. According to NSW BDM his mother was Rebecca.
Oh well let's hope borderman wakes up soon and puts us out of our misery as to whether we are researching the correct man :)
adding : We had fun anyway so don't worry about telling us we were tracking the wrong man.

Reading from " Charles Dickens and the Blacking Factory"...Henry Worms had 8 children, one of whom Lewis Henry emigrated to Australia to join his father. Henry was transported to Van Diemens land in 1825 and later absconded and was last heard of in Sydney...it seems Lewis may have arrived in Sydney about 1838...I know it is sketchy but it is all I have..Thanks again all.
-
Well this made me chuckle ;D ;D
Good thing I'm a huge Dickens fan. If our info gets included in the next book I think we should be entitled to a percentage of the royalties. ;) ;)
For those of us who aren't aware our Worms is of Jewish heritage and was supposedly, deported for stealing. Ironic considering the theft reports we found. ;D ;D
He has been mentioned in a book about Dickens' life. Of course it may not be the correct worms.

Yes, Cando, I was thinking that, also.
However, I think there is a connection somehow. ???
Jamjar
-
Cando, can you suggest an age for Henry the convict in 1842?
Not needed, now. I have looked at the Tasmanian record. Very interesting indeed. He was 57 when transported for a term of 14 years. He was very well behaved in Tassie. There is the word 'Run" on his file.
So that has him born in 1768 and 74 in 1842.
At time of transportation he left behind 8 children and a deceased wife.Grays ? Lane, Holborn.
His occupations were ?gold, washer of silver and confectioner.

No info :)

Hi.
The Proceedings of the Old Bailey for the conviction of Henry Worms on 25th Jan 1825 has him at 57 years of age.
Morris Worms, 14 was also found guilty but his Judgement respited.

There are no death registrations in NSW for a Henry Worms between 1831 and 1890

Perhaps he went back to England...could have gone anywhere or changed his name.
Cando

Yes, Cando, indeed anything is possible.
You'd think that if you had absconded you would change your name.
Is there a way of finding out details re: the Henry who was in strife in Sydney?

Hello All...Amazing response...knew almost zero about the Worms Family in Australia...thanks to fantastic response I can know put a "picture" together...sadly I was in Tasmania and Sydney some years ago..if only I had known..my Grateful Thanks to you all ...

Fascinating detective work
I picked up the story because of the reference to Gloucester House school run by Leopold Neumanger .
The Lewis Henry WORMS who attended that school would have lived in a very different world to Dickensian children
It was designed for upper class Jewish boys and girls + attended by the wealthy
Later it became a ladies academy .

Hi Thank you ....the family i am following(my wifes) is Henry transported in 1825....however looking through different Worms families i vaguely remember 2 Worms girls going to a top school somewhere i North London...i think one of them went to South Africa and became quite famous...sadly my notes have gone the same wat as my memory...
