Slightly off-topic but related to my family history - can anyone remember what the infant school was called on Addison Road, Rugby? It was an old Victorian-style school, where I attended until 1978 when we moved house to Bilton - I know it then merged with St Oswalds School. I can't find any info on it - it's now sheltered housing, but used to be a school with classrooms in a ring, with the hall in the middle - toilets were in a separate block outside, as was the school dinner hall. Can anyone tell me the name of the school?

Hi
St. Oswald's is the only school on Addison Rd. you can find it on Google Earth.
Take a look at this site for schools in Rugby.

Hi
Yes, St Oswalds is the only school now - the other school used to be the infant school, which then fed into St Oswalds, which was a junior school.
The infant school closed in the early 1980s (possibly late 1970s) and St Oswalds junior school then took in infants and juniors, as it does now. The infant school definitely wasn't called St Oswalds - they were two separate schools at the time. The infant school was on the other side of the road, down towards Lawford Road - it's now sheltered housing (the school building was knocked down). ???
-
What is the name of the sheltered housing?
Phone up St Oswalds and ask them for the name of the old Infants school.
-
The sheltered housing is lots of bungalows on a new road - no specific name as such (other than the road name, which isn't the school name). I'll try phoning the school - with a bit of luck they might have some info on the old school - thanks!

Here's a map showing the school, but no name given. http://maps.nls.uk/view/115635136#zoom=4&lat=1646&lon=11322&layers=BT

I used to live on Murray Road in about 1968, and before that I lived at Coton House
-
That's a great map - totally different now! I used to live on Jubilee Street and Victoria Street and they are still exactly the same. :)

Earlier map before the school was built :D

Fascinating map - shows that Jubilee Street (where I used to live) was just being built, and the village I now live in didn't really exist!!
-
You can even do them side-by-side :D If you use your cursor to drag one map across, the other one follows suit :D

Just thought I'd report back that the name of the school I was looking for was Bilton County Infants School. I found it on the Warwickshire's Past Unlocked website, which lists all the records available at the CRO. I'm going to the Records Office next week to have a look at the info they have on the school.

Hi my dad also went to this school we have been trying to find a photo of the school .did you manage to find one and was it Bolton county infants school .I would love to find out about the school I've tried council library and art gallery but not getting anywhere .please help
-
Yes, it was Bilton County Infants School. When I went to the County Records Office, I found some registers from the school, which had my mum and uncle listed. There were also books which were almost like diaries, and detailed things like when the pigswill man visited etc. There's a Facebook group and I found a photo of the school on there - I'll try and message you.
-

is this the school?

This is the image I showed my dad and he said it wasn't on the road there was a grass area and playground in front and the doors were at the back of the school with just windows to the front.on the old map I've attached it clearly shows the school off the main road which would be correct to what my dad is saying. I'm very confused.

No. That is the school in Bilton village.
It can be found at the bottom right on this map near the sideways red 48 just outside the map boundary.
The other school is in New Bilton, near the right centre of the same map.

No - the image you have is from Bilton Infants, which is still in Bilton village (Magnet Lane I think). The one on Addison Road was a Victorian school, with grass at the front, doors towards the back (used to be one for boys, one for girls), and outside toilets and canteen.

New Bilton County Primary School, Addison Road, 1958 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/449140/275232/13/101329 and New Bilton C of E Infants & Juniors School

Yes, we're definitely talking about the same school. It had a hall in the middle, with eight classrooms I think. The grass at the front was used for sports day mostly, as we used to play on a concreted area which went round the whole school. Sometimes for special events we went over to the park, which was opposite the school, at the corner of Addison Road and Lawford Road. If you search for it on the National Archives website, using Bilton County Infant School, you will find some records, and the records I looked at were at Warwickshire CRO (use their Warwickshire Past Unlocked website and you will see what records they have).

I went to that school I was born in 1974 I loved it a great little school I remember mrs Teevas who followed me across to st Oswalds,I remember the school getting knocked down such a shame as it was a beautiful little school
-
I think it was called County First infant school, I was there Sept 69 til Feb 72
-
The school on Addison Road was New Bilton County Primary & Junior school when I attended from 1955 - 1961.
I, by coincidence, have been looking for old photos of it.
-
The name of the school was New Bilton County First School (bless my mum for keeping my school reports! :D) I was there from 1974 to 1978 before moving up to St Oswald's C of E Middle School (now a primary and quite a new building at the time). The headteacher in my time was Mr Maude and my first teacher was Mrs Griffiths (she only passed away in very recent times in her 90s and we'd still been in touch). There was a driveway and footpath with the school field at the front, as well as the outdoor toilets and (I think) the dinner hall. The playground went most of the way around the school, if memory serves. Long gone now, of course, and replaced by the bungalows mentioned on here by others.
