Hi
I am trying to trace the children of James WALSH and Ann DEMPSEY. The parents query married on 21 January 1868 in Kaiapoi, New Zealand. Both had lived there for 18 months.
I have ten known children from Ann's probate. The children were born between 1868 to 1887. She was born about 1846 in Ireland, died on 9 June 1915 at Greymouth and she is buried in Karoro Cemetery.
From her probate in 1915 -
Thomas James WALSH of Seddonville sawmiller age 40 years
John Samuel WALSH of Turangaarere sawmill employee age 38 years
William Henry WALSH of Dannevirke farmer age 32 years
Richard Edmond WALSH of Turua saw doctor age 30 years
and
Annie FREEMAN wife of John Frederick Graham FREEMAN of Westport, deputy Harbour Master age 46 years
Mary LUSTY wife of William David LUSTY of Auckland journalist age 44 years
Edith OLDHAM wife of Fred William OLDHAM of Magoeri farmer age 42 years
Margaret HEWITT wife of John Edwin HEWITT of Arawia farmer age 36 years
Alice Adeline BALDWIN wife of James BALDWIN of Wellington Master Mariner age 28 years
Harriet HAMBLETON wife of Hugh Henry HAMBLETON of GREYMOUTH stated the above for her siblings and she would be aged 34 years.
I know some information on the daughters Annie, Mary and Harriet through family knowledge.
However I have no information on any of the sons and with having common names I am not sure which people of these names are my family.
I was led to believe that the father James WALSH died prior to 1895. However it is stated at Ann's probate that he deserted the family query not long after the last child was born in 1887. So I do not have a death date or death place for James WALSH.
Also the family surname is sometimes spell WALSHE.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Helen

Hi Minniehaha and Janette
Thank you for your information.
Regarding Richard Edmond WALSH I had two people by that name. Thank you for the burial information and his cause of death as I did not know where he died. This must be the correct Richard as the address is correct even if the occupation is not. Th other Richard WALSH died in 1945 in Auckland.
Also it fits with the wife that you gave me as her address is Ariki St. Ada remarried to Albert GIBBS and died in 1933 if I have got the puzzle correct.
Thank you for the NZ BDM.
Looking for more information on Samuel John WALSH. Query he went by John but I do not know anything about him.
All I was told that there were 10 or 12 children. Query one son lived in Matamata. I know the most about Mary LUSTY nee WALSH.
Thanks again.

His death?

-
Hi Minniehaha
I am not sure as I did not know about him until I found his mother's will. Before that family information said she died in 1936 and was sometimes called Nancy. This source said query that there was a son John but much of the information from this source I now believe not to be the right WALSH family. It did not match with the will. So I am now starting again.
I also know that sisters Mary and Harriet kept in touch until about 1947 and I have traced Mary's children. As for the brothers of Mary I have no idea. Her sisters, I am working on tracing their marriages.
Thanks

Hi All
Thank you for all the further information.
Thank you kiwihalfpint for the information on John Samuel WALSH. Sorry that I earlier typed his names around the other way as Samuel John. As least now you have helped eliminate the second person's death/burial information.
I am trying to follow up Thomas James WALSH. I have found a WWI military record. In it he married in 1913 instead of 1912 and states a son born 1901 but he has the surname McGILL. My question is if his wife had a child under 16, would Thomas James WALSH be able to claim for the child while doing his military service during World War One?
Thanks

Hi Helen
It appears that the child John McGILL, named in the Army file of Thomas James WALSH, was in fact the natural child of Thomas McGILL and his wife Laura Serena McGILL (nee HUDSON).
Please see the Probate file for > Thomas McGILL - of Seddonville, Westport - Coal Miner - Year: 1913.
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1865481
The statement made by Laura Serena McGILL (December 1912, days before her marriage to Thomas WALSH), gives the reason why there was a delay in her application to administer the estate of her late husband Thomas McGILL. It also gives the names of her children (as at Dec. 1912) :
- Thomas McGILL - now aged 23
- Florence Elizabeth - now aged 20
- Robert Hudson - now 17
- John - now 11
[Thomas McGILL died at Seddonville on 4 October 1907. Laura Serena was therefore a widow at the time of marrying Thomas James WALSH on 26 December 1912. ]

Hi Minnihaha
Thank you for help and more information. You have been most helpful because I was not sure about some of the information on the internet about William Henry WALSH and his wife Pearl. I tentatively have found nine children, so I will cross reference with the will of William Henry WALSH.
I will have to read the probate of Margaret HEWITT and Edith OLDHAM to see if any children are mentioned. I assume that Thomas James WALSH did not have any children of his own but helped bring up his wife Laura's son John MCGILL.
John Samuel WALSH and his wife Margaret I have no more information that what has been posted.
I think that Richard Edmond WALSH had a daughter Maureen Ailsa WALSH. Her mother Ada Kate remarried in 1932 to Albert Edward GIBBS. I think that the daughter and mother are buried together at Waikumete Cemetery. Have no information on her second husband.
Also the only information I have on Harriet HAMBLETON and her husband Hugh is that he drowned and left behind query 3 children.
Thanks again

Hi Helen,
Regarding the death of James Walsh(e), it may be helpful to obtain a birth printout for at least one of the younger of his children. [After October 1875 more information was gathered at registration.] This could help establish his birth year.

There do not appear to be any death registrations in the time frame for a James Walshe but maybe for Walsh. He may not of course have died in New Zealand.

Hi Miniehaha
Thank you for your postings regarding the ARMIT family. If you can get the death notice for Kenneth, then it would let me know if he is a brother.
Thank you for giving me the marriage and children on Margaret HEWITT nee Walsh and Edith OLDHAM nee Walsh. Hopefully there may be some descendants.
I was very interested to read the article about James WALSH(E). I had not had any luck with finding him and it did not help that there was another James and Annie WALSH living around Greymouth. However they were born around 1885 so the article can not be them. :)
The only piece of information I have is that on the Intentions to Marry for the eldest child and daughter Annie WALSH to John Frederick Graham FREEMAN, dated 9 August 1887, it is stated that James WALSH the father gives permission for Annie WALSH aged 18 to marry. Would he have to be present to give his permission?
I am not sure what happened to James WALSH. I was led to believe that he died prior to 1895 as he is stated on a marriage certificate as deceased. However I now think this was to cover up that he had left the family and that the family did not know if he was alive or dead. From many articles Ann WALSH is referred to as Mrs James WALSH or Mrs Ann WALSH or the wife of the late Mr James WALSH.
I have not been able to find a death date to fit James. On his intention to marry to Ann DEMPSEY he stated that he was 25 years old, a Labourer and present in Kaiapoi for 18 months. As this was stated in 31 December 1867 I have his birth about 1842.
Ann stated at the same time that she was aged 21 years old, a servant and present in Kaiapoi for 18 months. This made her birth year 1846. However on her death registration in June 1915, her age is given as 67 query making her birth year as 1848. Was she under age? ??? ???
I will look at getting a birth print out of a child born after 1875. I can not find the birth registration for John Samuel WALSH born 1876. :(
Thank you for your help.
Helen

Hello Helen,
Yes, I think James Walsh(e) would have had to have given his permission in person, in writing or via an agent. And if the latter there would possibly be an entry to that effect on the ITM?
Minniehaha.
-
Hi Helen and Minniehaha,
Intention to Marry Notices included the field, 'Person giving permission in case of a minor to marry', and the information given was usually no more than, 'James Bloggs, father' or similar.
I have seen one which read, 'No one in the Colony to give permission'.
So if James WALSH gave permission in this record it is very likely that he was either there in person or gave permission in writing.
Spades
-
Hi Minniehaha
Thank you for your advice. I was given the Intentions to Marry many years ago before I was sure that it was my family. As far as I know all that was written was James WALSH gave permission. I might have to recheck this myself but I do not know how or where I would do this.
The intentions to marry is the same year as the last child was born. So I am trying to pinpoint when James left according to Anne's will.
Helen

Hi Minniehaha and Kiwihalfpint
Thank you for the possible deaths for James WALSH. I have not been able to found any death notices to help confirm or eliminate these James WALSH deaths.
In regards to the James WALSH died in 1930. I read that for this to be possible James was a father to children to Ann and to Honora at the same time. ???
I am not worried that James WALSH may have lived after Anne WALSH nee DEMPSEY who died in 1915. My question is : Harriet her daughter, I assume would state in her affidavit on her mother's death what she believed to be true, in that her father had died since leaving her mother. With Anne dying interstate what would have happened to her property or possessions?
I have also found the death of their daughter Alice Adelina(e) WALSH as Alice Adeline BALDWIN in Hong Kong during World War Two. I have no idea why she was in Hong Kong. ???
As her husband was a mariner would I be correct that he would be sailing for the Navy or merchant Navy as this time? I think that they had a daughter Phyllis who also was living in Hong Kong.
Any suggestions how I can confirm this greatly appreciated.
Thanks Helen

Hi Minniehaha
Thank you very much for death notices and marriage dates. :)
If it is possible to look for Vera Marjorie LAWN nee Hewitt death notice I would greatly appreciate it. So far I have three children born to Margaret WALSH and John HEWITT - Shirley, Vera and a brother Daniel killed in 1944.
I did not have any information on the ARMIT family, although after talking to cousins in the weekend to see what they knew, I got the impression that they thought that Emma Jane ARMIT, daughter of Annie WALSH had more that 2 children. It appears that Kenneth Robert ARMIT was a nephew to Emma Jane ARMIT and William David ARMIT.
I am now putting all the information together - the death notice for HARWOOD, Doreen Adelaide. (1985) has me more confused. The above cousins thought that she had a child. I now know her husband died 16 June 1976 in Auckland. Maybe the child died before their mother since the death notice claim her to be an aunt of people I have not heard of. May be they are related through her husband.
It appears that John Samuel WALSH and Thomas James WALSH did not have any children of their own. Now looking for the death of John WALSH's widow- Margaret Mary WALSH nee REID.
Once again thank you. :) :)

Hi Minniehaha
Thank you for your further help. From the newspaper articles on Papers Past I gather that Harriet and Hugh had three children. I am patiently waiting for the next child to appear in the births. Hugh's probate gave everything to Harriet and the children were not mentioned. All I know is that Harriet died query in Christchurch on 28 August 1973.
I have been looking into Margaret Mary REID who married John Samuel WALSH. There are many people by the name Margaret Mary WALSH so to work out her death is a challenge. I think that she may be the daughter of Thomas and Mary REID born in 1875 and maybe she died in October 1948 as Margaret Mary WALSHE. If anyone can confirm this would be great or give me suggestions in finding my Margaret Mary WALSH.
Thanks Helen
-
Hi Helen,
"......Margaret Mary WALSH..... maybe she died in October 1948......"
Do you have a place of death?
Minniehaha
-
Hi Miniehaha
Not a definite place of death but in Auckland.
I am trying to see if the Margaret Mary WALSH recorded as Margaret Mary WALSHE on the NZ Online BDM aged 73 and the Margaret Mary WALSH widow in the Auckland National Archives are the same person. Also is this person the widow of John Samuel WALSH that you kindly gave me the death notice for dated The New Zealand Herald, Auckland, Monday, December 15, 1947. His ashes were scattered at Waikumete Cemetery. I can not find a match for his wife Margaret Mary WALSH.
Thank you for your help.
Any suggestions most welcome.

Hi Minniehaha
Thank you very much. You have made my day. :) :)
It is good to confirm what I had found. Interesting that Margaret Mary WALSH(E) nee REID was up North with her sisters. I am going to assume that Margaret and John did not have any children.
Thank you very much for the PM regarding Vera LAWN. :)

Hi Tania
Welcome to Rootschat.
I am interested in making contact and to discuss the family of Harriet and Hugh HAMBLETON.
Can you tell me which child your husband descends from?
You need to reply or post twice more and then we can send messages off line.
Look forward to your reply. A great Mothers Day surprise.

Hi thanks for all the information on this post. Just going to give you all a headache, family information of Ann Walsh wife of James Walsh. Ann was know to family as Nancy, when my mother in law talked to Harriet (her Grandmother) years ago she was given the information that Nancy was also know by Agnes and Mary. She knew there were things that were not to be talked about.
Went to the cemetery this week to see Ann's grave, yes I found it and it is the one pictured in findagrave. Local council records are not online so every search is via the council. Council records only gave me that she was recorded as Annie Walsh (headstone says Ann) records also show that there is no headstone. I had the right location as they drew me a map.
Hugh Henry Hambleton married Harriet Walsh(e) 2 June 1909 in Wellington. Children Alison Gertrude 10/2/1911. Hugh Galbraith 22/10/1913. Nancy Durelle (after her grandmother) 8/11/1917.
Hugh Galbraith Hambleton married Betty Gwen Sycomore nee Moss in Wellington.

Hope this helps.

Hi
Thank you for your post.
My family also knew that Ann/Annie WALSH as Nancy. However my Nana ( her granddaughter) always said her name was Annie. Her Mother Mary ( called Nina) and the daughter of James and Ann WALSH did not talk much about her mothers family. Just said it was a large family and that she did not wish to have a large family like her mother.
I know that Harriet and my Nana Lilian LUSTY meet in Christchurch after the war as my father took his mother by train to Christchurch. That is how I knew that Harriet had some children but was a widow. Also that Hugh HAMBLETON was an inventor and engineer.
Thank you for confirming Hugh and Harriet's children. I gather that your mother-in-law is Hugh and Betty's daughter.
Thank you for your comments about Annie ( Ann) WALSH's grave. I was surprised to find her as Annie as I had been looking for her as Nancy. Does you family have an idea where James WALSH her husband disappeared to? My family always said that he was dead and he definitely was not around when Mary ( Nina) married William David LUSTY in 1895.
I also got the impression that there were things that were not to be talked about and I was a very young child when Nina died. I only met her once. I also wondered why the branches of the children of Ann and James WALSH have not kept in contact over the years.
Does your family know any other information about families of the children of James and Ann?
If you post one more reply we can send each other a personal message. Then we can discuss some of the family history off line.
Thanks for reply and information.

Hi Helen
Yes my mother in law is Hugh and Betty's daughter. I may have found the immigration and birth of Nancy. At the moment am having major internet issues so searching is a nightmare.
Thanks Tania

Hi
Have spent another big day searching and have found what may be the death of James Walsh. In past papers there is a death of James Walsh on the 12 September 1887, due to an accident. Also found a note saying he was buried in Greymouth so will have to go back to the Council tomorrow.
Tania

Hello Tania,
I think this may be the death you are referring to.......
1887/3488 Walsh James 40Y
Minniehaha.
-
Hi
Yes I think that is the death. According to the papers he died near Otaki and the informants did not know much about this James WALSH.
I have that he was born about 1842 so the dates are a little out. However it does fit that the family said he left around 1887/1888. Their last child was born at the beginning of 1887.
Will have to look for an inquest to see if that will help.
Thanks Tania and Minniehaha for your further searching and help.

Hi Helen
My name is Tania and I am the daughter of Hugh and Betty Hambleton's daughter [and sister in law to Tania a.k.a Coasterx3].
I am just wondering if you got any further in your search for James Walsh? Through DNA we have connected to descendants of Anne Dempsey's sister who are also in New Zealand, however we are still in the dark about James.
Would love to hear from you.
