Does anyone have more specific information about the following McFadyens? I have bits and pieces only, and would be interested in finding out more about Anne Dow's family. Rev James McFadyen was my GG-grandfather, married to Anne Dow 18 February 1841. James Angus McFadyen, born 13 May 1851, was my Greatgrandfather; John was born 13 May 1851 but died a year later at the manse in Patna. There were two daughters, Mary, born in 1842, and Jane R M, born in 1847 in Canada West. I did find out that Jane was a school mistress in Stenton Parochial School in Lothian or Midlothian.

Hi
If James and Anne died from 1855 onwards - copies of their death certs will show their respective parents names and mothers maiden name.
You can search for and download copies from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which is a pay per view site via purchase of credits

Thank you all for the great information, some of which I had when I unearthed some genealogical studies I had commissioned back in 1998. Confirmation of facts and events is very important. Le slàn, NicPhaidein

I know this is belated but perhaps someone will find it useful.
There is an Index of Scottish Presbyterian Ministers embracing Church of Scotland, Free Church. United Presbyterian etc ministers. Look here: http://ecclegen.com/general-index-mac1-2/#MacEwen,%20James Scroll down and you will find James M’Fadyen: 1851, Catrine, and a reference where a little is said about his ministry.

i have read that article, but many thanks for posting it. I always wonder how James got into the ministry. Both parents were handloom weavers and his sister, Margaret, was a bobbin winder as a young girl. I'm still trying to find out more about his other sister Jane R. M. McFadyen. She was a teacher at a parochial school in Stenton near Haddington.

Did you download a copy of his death cert to confirm his parentage?

I've not seen his death certificate, but I know from various other sources that his parents were John McFadyen and Jean Renfrew.
