Hi.
I have a record (albeit transcribed) of the marriage record( 11th February,1868) of Hugh Gallagher of Dooey, Lettermacaward and Bridget Hanlon of Poolbrain. Does anyone know where (or what) was Poolbrain?
Thanks.
Paul.

Where did the marriage take place?
It's more than likely a townland name, likely badly transcribed if the marriage took place in Donegal.
Mis-spelt and or badly transcribed if it tool place outside of Donegal.

possibly Poolbrean, Magheracar - LINK (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,579697,858709,10,7)

You might need to check the year of the marriage- it's 1867 on LDS extracted marriages: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGZF-7F6

Hi Sinann, the marriage is listed as taking place in Dungloe district.
Hi myluck, Poolbrean is certainly a possibility.
Hi Aghadowey, same day and month, but out by one year. Strange!!
Thanks to all.
Paul.

Agree, Pollbrean, Dooey, Lettermacaward:

Bridget Hanlon's father in the 1868 marriage was given as James Hanlon, a farmer. Griffiths Valuation shows a James Hanlon in the townland of Dooey, civil parish of Lettermacaward, local print date was 1857.

gaffy and hallmark, I also agree. So it is within the townland of Dooey, same as her husband Hugh Gallagher. I have no doubt then, that I walked by it, or on it, or through it when I spent my holidays in Dooey as a boy, down from the Big Smoke.
Thanks to all for your help.
Regards.
Paul.

So there is more than one Poll Bréan, which is no surprise by the sea as it appears to mean Stinking Hole

Oh Sinann, you say the nicest things! I'm sure there are a few An Poll Breans in the Lilywhite County.
By the way, how did you get the Fada above the e in Brean?
Paul.

Yes indeed, just wrote this evening to my local TD as I'm trying get rid of one, although in this case the problem is human rather than nature so far more unpleasant. Phéééééééé.

Just to add:
Hold [ctrl] & [alt] & [shift] & [e or letter required] for a Capital É or other!
Worked for many years for in a company with Éireannin the title!
I still use the old codes for ½ etc [alt] held down and type 0189 at the same time or ÷ [alt] held down and 0247! Much quicker than trying to move a mouse around! and great on a laptop - also confuses people where they are appearing from!!!! ;D
