Title: AMBROSE DOLPHIN - where did he go?
Post by: WideEyedGirl on Saturday 30 July 16 19:03 BST (UK)
With an unusual name such as Ambrose Dolphin, I thought he'd be easy to trace!

One of my ancestor's sisters was Catherine McWeeny (born about 1829 in Ireland) - she married a man by the surname Dolphin - she is living in Bradford in 1851 and 1861 with this surname, and a son (presumabley fathered by the man she married) called Ambrose Dophin (born about 1847 in Bradford - the 1861 census gives incorrect date and location for his birth if anyone looks for this particular census).

I was told by members on rootschat that Catherine McWeeny had married a Ambrose Dolphin in Bradford in 1846 (although I haven't found the record myself yet). This would mean that the child Ambrose was named after his father.
Despite this, I can't find any trace of the Ambrose Dolphin that Catherine McWeeny apparently married - in the two censuses that I have found Catherine Dolphin (nee McWeeny) on, she has been married but living with her son and parents (Andrew and Ellen McWeeny), with no trace of her husband.

I'm wondering just where Ambrose could be - I have been unable to find anything out about him - and the marriage between him and Catherine is based on what other members have informed me of.
I'm hoping someone will be able to shed some light on this, as it's been a bit of a mystery to me.

Many thanks for any help and advice,
Holly

Thank you Cas, I'm just looking at the Army Service record now - it's a bit difficult to read but I can make out what you've transcribed.
Could certainly explain why I couldn't find him on censuses!
