I have been banging my head for some time with this brickwall, so hoping a someone might have a fresh idea.
My 2 x great grandmother was Jane Musson, according to all census records she was born abt 1852 in Crich, Derbyshire (can also be registered as Belper) She married Arthur Hutchinson 3rd Nov 1872 in Basford, Notts. I have the marriage cert and she states her father is George Musson who works for the Railways (GWR)
There are various tree's on Ancestry that list her parents as William Musson and Grace Thraves, but looking at these further I dont think they are correct, I later find Grace on the 1861 census with her family as head of the family and daughter listed as Mary Jane born in Derby in 1952, living in Lincolnshire.
I have not been able to place Jane Musson on a 1861 census as yet, nor confirm a birth or baptism for her
Every other document I have for Jane Musson she is just Jane not Mary Jane, and living in either Nottingham or Derbyshire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm going round in circles
I have also posted this in the Nottingham forum

Pansypetal.
Have you discounted the birth in Q/E Sep 1854 for a Jane Musson -- Belper Reg Dist?
Also there is a 6 year old Jane Musson in 1861 living with a stepfather John Hyde and his wife Mary Ann.
A Mary Ann Musson married John Hyde in 1858 - Belper Reg Dist.
A George Musson married in Q/E Dec 1853 - Belper Reg Dist. There are no Mary Anns on the same page - but there are Marys.
I am wondering if this is George - and he died between 1853 and 1858.
It may be worth obtaining the birth cert for the Jane born 1854 - to confirm or eliminate that one 'from enquiries'.

I think you may be misreading Jane's age on census
It looks like her birth was c. 1854
1881/91/1901 census her y.o.b. is given as c.1854
1871 her age is transcribed as 19 but image reads 17 (she is Lodging with a Hutchinson family) occ Frame Work Knitter
I can only find a birth reg for Jane Musson Sept qtr 1854 Belper Reg Dist ( Crich falls within this district)
and then I think I have found her age 6 in 1861
post more shortly

The December 1853 marriage was George Musson and Mary Wheatcroft

I wonder if she was registered as Mary at marriage but full name was Mary Ann?

There is another spelling of Crick CRICK which is a village in Northamptonshire near to the M1 motorway.
-
Suzard -- that's what I wondered also.
I think that 1854 birth cert is definitely needed. Just to see if father was George and check the mother's maiden name.

Another little "clue" as to Mary being Mary Ann Wheatcroft
Jane Musson had a half brother Samuel Hyde age 3 (in 1861) b Crich
Here he is in 1881
40 Trafalgar St Sheffield Yorks
Samuel Wheatcroft Head M 40 Wood Turner Crich Derbys
Jane wife 42 Conisbro' Yks
Sarah Ann daughter 13 Sheffield Yks
Samuel son 10 Sheffield
Alice Beatice daughter 8 Sheffield
Kate Emily daughter 1 Sheffield
SAMUEL HYDE nephew U 23 circular sawyer Crich Derbys
RG11 4643 25 9
so Samuel Wheatcroft was Samuel Hyde's uncle
and Samuel Wheatcroft was the brother of Mary Ann Wheatcroft
by the way mary Ann hyde died before the 1871 census

Hi
thanks everyone.
I do know think I have broke the brickwall. Her mother was Mary Ann Wheatcross who remarried John Hyde as soon as her husband George Musson died. I have found them all on the 1861 census now.
As Mary Ann Wheatcross married George Musson in 1853, it makes hte 1854 birth reg more likely to be my Jane Musson as its the only birth reg I have ever found.........so will order the cert to confirm all these details
-
Mary Ann Wheatcross
Surname was Wheatcroft - not Wheatcross
-
thanks......I've found it listed as both, so added to my tree as both
-
A George Musson aged 24 died 1854 Eckington which sounds like could be him (regn.district Chesterfield in Dec.qtr.1854).

I think you will find her name is Wheatcroft - and when you have Wheatcross it would most probably be from a mistranscribed document
It is an easy mistake to make as in the old writing "ss" is usually written with the first "S" being elongated - quite easily mistaken for "F"
Baptism
Mary Ann Wheatcroft
30 Jun 1837
Crich Derbyshire
parents Thomas & Sarah Wheatcroft
Mary Ann and her sisters Eliza, Elizabeth & Maria were all baptised on the same day

thanks... I have found it spelt both ways as Wheatcroft and Wheatcross in various documents so going with both spellings
-
I found on familysearch
Marriage 16 Feb 1858
Belper
Mary Ann Wheatcross Musson
age 30
father Thomas Wheatcross
groom John Hyde
this at least shows we are on the right track
but this is just a transcription not a document so the image could differ
Suz

thanks yes I have the details for the marriage
just looking for the baptism records advised earlier
-
It may be of interest to you - in the parish records for Crich and surrounding areas there are no "Wheatcross" names - there are these spellings for Wheatcroft
Wheatcroft
Wheatcrofte
Wheatcrofts
Whetcroft
do you want dates of other children's baptisms?? e.g. I think Samuel's was 1840

thanks
what site did you find the Crich parish records, for the baptisms. Been searching and they aren't showing up anywhere. Mary Ann's baptism was rather late as she is born abt 1828....... have found and documented Samuel and Elizabeth as siblings but not Eliza and Marie. I have Samuel app DOB as 1842.
Many thanks
-
;D found the parish records thanks........
-
the four girls were baptised same day and only Maria's date of birth is shown 23 Jul 1833
Samuel was baptised 9 Aug 1840
on 1841 census he is 10mths old
1841 has Mary 11, Elizabeth 9, Maria 7 and Samuel 10months
1851 has Mary Ann 20, Elizabeth 18, Maria15 and Samuel 9

I wonder if Eliza (who was baptised with her sisters in 1837) died young
There is a burial Crich 11 Feb 1839 of Eliza Wheatcroft - unfortunately no age is given
Suz
-
I found the same death entry so wondered the same as she doesn't appear on a census, so will have to look into that further. The burial was on hte 11th of Feb 1839 age 2, so she would have only just been born when the girls where all baptised so wonder if Eliza's birth prompted the baptism.
I also found a burial record for a Elizabeth Wheatcroft on the 9th of April 1852 age 20, which Elizabeth would have been so need to check thru the census etc to see if I can follow her to see if this could be her or not.....
Its all very exciting as I had this brickwall for some time and had moved onto another tree but got brought back to this tree as I found 2 living cousins.........
Thank you so much for your help its really appreciated, cant beleive that I am now 2 possibly 3 generations further back than my initial brickwall
