Mary Jane Watt, wife of David Lindsay, is still showing as married at the birth of her child Launcelot on 16 Dec 1885. How could she have married a James (Mc)Hardie that year?
Added: Can't see a marriage with these names at any time on SP.

Thanks for your time Monica.
I should of explained better, a marriage from about 1881 to 1911.
If her husband David Lindsay has gone to America after the 1881 census in Brechin and not come back. Sorry I can't find the exact date David Lindsay went to America.
I would think that James Hardie and Mary Jane Lindsay nee Watt on the 1911 census with the children they had together must have got married in this period. 1911 census in the column duration of marriage it is 25 years.
-
Have you looked at any of James and Mary's children's birth regs to see what details and date they gave for their marriage?
There isn't any marriage showing under these names at any time on SP though. It may be that they never married and just passed themselves off as married. With David Lindsay deserting her and going abroad, she may never have been able to confirm if he was alive or deceased. For this reason, she would not have been free to remarry likely.

Thanks for looking Monica. Also good advice.
You are probably right about not marrying.
