Title: Persecution of Sussex Quakers
Post by: Lady Di on Saturday 06 August 16 10:39 BST (UK)
Hi All

I'm looking for a copy of the article "The Persecutions of Sussex Quakers - 1655-1690" by William Albery.

Sussex County Magazine (Vol 7) has this article (Google Books) but only snippets of information are showing.

Would anyone have any idea where I may be able to view a complete copy please?

Thanks

Di

It looks like the microfilm might be available through family history libraries...

It looks like the British Library in St Pancras has them

The Sussex County Magazine. vol. 1. no. 1-vol. 30. no. 7.

I could try ordering volume 7 when I go again and see what happens  :-\ if you can't get there

Great news - thanks for all the options.

Thanks for the offer Dawn - if you have a chance to have a quick look thu the article and see if the surnames Shaw and Prior/Pryor are mentioned I'd be grateful.

Many thanks for your help

Cheers

Just an update - I've found a copy of a 1735 Google Book version of the persecution of the Sussex Quakers. Although it may not have all the info reported in William Albery's story, the earlier version tells an amazing story.

Thanks for all the suggestions and offers.

Hi Di

I ordered up a copy of the Sussex County Magazine vol 7 (1933) before you obtained a copy of the google book.

Anyway, I was at the British Library yesterday so have managed to copy William Albery's articles, there are 5 making up the series.

If you send me your email address on a pm I can send you a link to a dropbox or google drive page which I need to set up as there are 22 images.

Di,

I found an article on the persecution of Quakers in Lewes in SAC Vol 16 pp65 onwards.

It might be useful, I hope.

Many thanks Nell.

The poor Quakers of Sussex didn't have an easy time of it in those days unfortunately. I was looking for a few early wills for some of the Quaker family members and then realised that they had so many of their goods and possessions "stolen" by those who should have known better.

Hence not a lot of wills for some families
