Title: Foresters Cottages, Main Street, Uppingham
Post by: Newfloridian on Sunday 14 August 16 17:05 BST (UK)
Browsing the 1939 Directory I came across a string of 10 cottages labelled as above in the middle of Main Street, Uppingham. Is / was there any significance to this? ie part of the Union Workhouse

Doesn't make any mention of Foresters' Cottages so presumably not part of the Workhouse environment

Forester's Cottages are actually on Main Street in Caldecott, part of Uppingham R.D..

Hi David

Are the cottages still there? I've just down a Google street view 'cruise' along Main Street, Caldecott. I can see The Plough and The Green (I even know someone who used to live in The Old Post Office!) but can't identify anything that looks like 10 cottages or see where your plaque 'lives'

Many thanks

The picture was taken from Street View.

Coming out of Lyddington Road towards The Plough, they are on the left-hand side. I am not sure if the red brick cottages are part of them, including nos 13 and 15 which can be seen on white doors, but the stone cottages, which adjoin them, have the sign. You can read No. 27 Foresters Cottages at the far end.

Many thanks David

Have now 'got it'. The key was one of the two cottages just before the block starts which has the inscription  "Snelston" over the door. This is entered on the 1939 Directory placing my family in the 3rd cottage in - at what is now 21 Main Street

I imagine the cottages were named as the inhabitants probably worked in the nearby ancient Rockingham Forest, just a thought.
