Hello,
Edward HUGHES, a 31 year old Mariner, was charged with "unlawfully and feloniously killing one Edward BELLIS at Northop on 21 April 1869" He was found not guilty of manslaughter and acquitted. There is a report in the Wrexham Advertiser of 24 April 1869 which states that Edward BELLIS was the captain of the vessel Wepre Lass and the fight took place at Connah's Quay.
I know it is a question of finding that needle in the haystack, but is there any possibility someone may be able to confirm some personal details about Edward HUGHES? Was he born in Holyhead, for instance? Was his mother Ann EVANS who once lived at Stable Yard, Royal Hotel, Holyhead?

I will have to try to find the article again that,I think,gives a clue to the identity of Edward Hughes,though still a long shot.The article says Edward Bellis and Edward Hughes were brought up near to each other.
Making a guess as to Edward Bellis in 1861,I think the respective families are to be found at Evans Place,Flint in the 1841 census
Robert and Mary Hughes HO107 1407 8 14 21 (Son Edward born 1827)
Edward and Mary Bellis HO107 1407 8 14 20 (Son Edward born 1829)

Thank you SO much for the link to that newspaper report. It was hilarious -- I loved the way the reporter had included descriptions, such as the Coroner's infirmaties of almost total loss of sight and hearing -- the fact that the foreman was shouting 'vehemently down the tube' - then 'still shouting down the trumpet'.
And to round it off - a discussion about travelling expenses! Very entertaining indeed, despite the serious nature of the incident under consideration.

You should be able to find Edward Hughes of the Wepre Lass in the Crew Lists and Agreements held at Flintshire Record Office. Details are here https://archiveswales.llgc.org.uk/anw/get_collection.php?coll_id=2240&inst_id=28&term=crew%20lists
This should give you his place of birth. Maybe not accurately though. My grandfather has places of birth listed as Connah's Quay, Chester, and Malpas, Cheshire, (correct birth place).

I believe the key to unlocking the story of Edward HUGHES is tracing his mother, Ann EVANS. There is no reason to doubt the information as it was stated on his prison records.

Hi,
Edward Hughes was tried at the Flintshire Assize at Mold in August 1869. The Jury returned a verdict of Not Guilty and he was acquitted. Ref: Wrexham and Denbighshire Advertiser and Cheshire Shropshire & North Wales Register 14th August 1869.
