I don't see any obvious way to accomplish this?

I'm sorry but accounts aren't closed.

You can however stop receiving email notifications by editing your profile here

and just to make sure, you can unnotify the 2 pages of current topic notifications by ticking the boxes at the right side of the topic title and then click the unnotify button
