Hello All
My 4 X times Gt. Grandfather George Hood, appears in the Selby Land Tax records in 1812 and married Sarah Russel at Selby 18 July 1815 (Marriage Intention and Bond to the Selby Peculiar Court dated 16 May 1815), giving his age as 28 years and Occupation as Cooper in all Marriage documents.
George Hood lives at Selby, becoming a Retail Brewer by about 1826 and has a Tannery at Selby by about 1830 and dies at Selby 18 September 1845, age given as 60 years on Death Certificate. His Selby Will bundle confirms his death date, mentions Wren Lane and Gowthorpe and that he was a Brewer and Tanner.
There is NO Baptism entry in the Selby Parish Register for George Hood and NO Selby burial record either.
There is also no record of any Selby burial for four of his adult children and nor his Widow Sarah Hood who died 11 Gowthorpe, Selby, on 28 November 1879 aged 86, in the Selby Parish Register, nor in the Selby Council Cemetery either (opened 1858).
My George Hood, is not the same George Hood of Morpeth, Northumberland, nor the Army George Hood who died at Leeds, earlier in September 1845.
1863 South Bishopwearmouth / Sunderland
However, when James and Sarah Hood of Selby, had their son James Alfred Hood on 25 September 1863, they gave their address as 34 Blandford Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, but were back at Selby for the birth of their next child.
James Hood (father of James Alfred Hood) was one of five sons of my mysterious 4 X Gt. Grandfather George Hood who married at Selby in July 1815.
1st Oct 1786 Gateshead, Baptism - Geo: Son of John Hood
The above George Hood Marriage and Death documents confirm a birth circa 1785 to 1787 for George Hood, making the Gateshead Baptism Geo: S. of John Hood, an ideal suggestion, but I have absolutely no document to link this George Hood of Gateshead to the appearance of George Hood of Selby.

This may be the same as that established by Stoddart and Co. in 1795 at Saltmeadows (HER 4366: Fig 12) and soon owned solely by a former partner Anthony Hood. Question
Looking for any document please, regarding John Hood of Gateshead and son George, to fill the gaps and/or to see if the George Hood 1786 baptism at St Mary's Gateshead, links to my George Hood of Selby, who appears in the Selby Land Tax in 1812?
I am also wondering if John Hood, Publican of the Ship, continued to renew his Victuallers Licence at Gateshead, or elsewhere in the Newcastle area?
Thank you.
Kind regards, Mark

Hello dobfarm, Claire and All
I see you found the Hood & Ryle, Newcastle, information I posted on another thread, for another Rootschatter. I noticed the reference to Sinclair too.
Been going through the Hoods in North-east newspapers and Jabez Hood (defendant) got into a Court dispute in 1827 Hammond v. Hood, regarding a loan of 300.l from Edw Hammond who sought to recover it from Jabez Hood and in the pre-amble to this later Court dispute it says ...
The late Mr Robert Hood, the father of the defendant had carried on successfully, for many years, the trade of Victualler, and dying in 1812, when his family were minors, their affairs got into the Court of Chancery. Mr Hammond was appointed by the Court of Chancery to conduct the business in 1816, and continued to conduct for several years.
Mr Hammond had been instructed in the art of rectifying, and had, for a considerable time, conducted a distillery at Brighton.

Now I'm wondering if the John Hood buried at the Ballast Hills Cemetery is John Hood (father to Geo Hood at Gateshead 1st October 1786).
With the exception of Quakers and I think Jews, Non-conformists at this time had to marry in C of E / Anglican Church often with an Allegation / Bond.
Someone has said to me, that some N-C only baptised their children to qualify for a cheaper burial at their local Church graveyard and save transporting the body elsewhere, if they should die as children, or minors.

Think about it !
Satement 1

Statement 2
It can't also be said there are absolutely no documents of elimination to prove that Geo Hood son of John 1786 was not George Hood who died 1845 Selby .
Statement 3
Baptism Geo Hood son of John 1786 Gateshead, with no infant burial of Geo, there are absolutely no documents to say who he was after his baptism - just a beginning of a life.
-
I can't assume anything really, especially as there was a reference to a John Hood, Mariner at Selby, Yorkshire, where I definitely know that Selby, was where my 4 X Gt. Grandfather George Hood was from.
There are two other births at least (possibly three), for the age of 60 years [58 years calculated from George Hood's age given at Marriage], when George Hood died 18th September 1845.
There is even another George Hood bapt/birth giving 1st October 1786.
I can't rule out a Borders / Scottish connection either.

Have you tried to do some eliminating of the above 3 baptisms by looking for marriages or burials and other indicators like types of categories like occupations or class status or wealth of the families studied.
It doubtful a businessman from a far, would take on such a specialised bankrupt business without the skills of that trade himself, having to depend on the workmen's unknown skills and history of the mens personalities of reliabilities at work or their healths without prior local knowledge or family knowledge. Its possible the business went bust if the main customer was dropping off orders being the main reason the cooper business went to the wall - meaning the cooper business running operatations were ok bearing in mind R Gibson was advertising for a skilled copper 7 years before in 1800.
Maybe time to do a bit recapping ! as there has been a mega lot of associated George Hood info that has been put on Rootchat over the last 12 months :-\
I'll leave you with it but its been fun. :)

I know no burials have been found for George and his wife Sarah, could you list the names and dates of his children you have no burials for.
Thanks

Thank you All,
Also been looking at the writing style of 'George' and 'Hood' in the Coldingham, Berwickshire Register entry and the writing looks a bit similar in places, to George Hood's signature (top left of my posts) in the Selby Deed, although George Hood's Marriage Allegation and Bond Signatures are more circular on the stick of the 'd'. Perhaps the Coldingham Clerk was a Teacher.
Although the 1841 Census for George Hood suggests a Yorkshire birthplace, we also suspect a possible Selby Mariner connection (connection not proven), but both an elderly John Hood (82 yrs in Apr 1819), Jane wife of John Hood of Selby Mariner (65 yrs in Aug 1803) and also my George Hood lived at Selby.
I'm having to keep an open mind, but Gateshead Durham and Newcastle are of great interest too.
I posted in the relevant Scottish Counties (with two specific questions) to see if I can rule out any of these Scottish ones.
Thanks, Mark

I think that I would be inclined to look for the marriages of the parents named in these 3 baptisms to see if there are occupations mentioned - this is the era of the Dade-type registers. ;)
John Hood and Alison Fife
William Hood and Agnes Lamb - unlikely as he is said to be a Gardener
John Hood and Christian Donaldson

Hello All
Thanks dobfarm for those emails, getting the feeling that there were Hoods in most Yorks Parishes. Thinking of going to Newcastle (or pay Archives to do a few checks), but feeling cynical.
George Hood, is simply a 'loose cannon' rolling around in Selby, who has left no clue, in anything found so far. Something makes us believe C of E and yet also non-conformist. Perhaps, he changed religion, like the weather.
All a Big Mystery
George Hood died "at Selby" 18 September 1845 aged 60 yrs, Tanner & Brewer. Three newspapers Yorkshire Gazette; York Herald and The Leeds Intelligencer (say 63 yrs).
However 28 years old in 1815 (Marriage), so likely 58 to 59 years (in his 60th year).
Sarah Hood "Widow of George HOOD Tanner", died 11 Gowthorpe, Selby 28 November 1879, aged 86 yrs, baptised at Selby.
Their adult children:-
Richard Hood Grocer, died Market Place, Selby 2 May 1850, aged 23 yrs (Sheffield and Rotherham Independent; York Herald; Hull Advertiser; Hull Packet; Leeds Mercury and Leeds Intelligencer - newspapers 23/ 24 yrs)
Sarah Hood died Selby 22 September 1853, aged 18 years;
Mary Hood died Selby 24 November 1854, aged 34 years;
Ellen Hood died Selby 27 July 1855, aged 23 years.
Regarding Parish Churchyards, it would seem even when closed, if one parent was buried in the churchyard, the spouse and unmarried adult children could be buried there too.
Died before 1851 Census
No Child baptisms with a Desent
No suggestion in Marriage Allegation and Bond, only that George Hood appeared to be from the Peculiar jurisdiction of Selby and Chester Newby of the same place, Miller, was Bondsman.
No Brewing Excise Applications survive for 1820s WYAS (George Hood became a Retail Brewer about 1825/1826)
No Apprenticeship found to date
Not Registered at Coopers Hall
No Overseer of the Poor records for 1838, the year George Hood was elected
No accident at George Hood's Tannery or Brewery premises, or apparent business dispute in newspapers.
No Court dispute found to date involving George Hood Sen'r being in dispute, giving his father.
No suggestion of George's origin in property Deed Registrations
No request for place of burial in Probate Bundle
Hood sons were Admitted to Manor of Selby (late Thomas Gouldsbrough's Copyhold property), no help in Gouldsbrough's Will, seems the Hood sons settled the late Gouldsbrough's Mortgage and paid the widow, what had already been paid off mortgage.
No Gibson Bankruptcy File and Bankruptcy Registers leave no hint, even who the Creditors were.
A Mr Hood apparently in Selby Land Tax from at least 1781, likely to be John Hood as he appears as an Occupier when a house of John Spencer in Millgate was sold in 1802.
James Cockin, Witness at the Selby July 1815 Marriage. James Cockin name seems to be Thorne, to Doncaster area. Cockin at Luddington Lincs, Blacktoft etc., see the Jane Cockin thread, Signature on original Marriage reads James Cockin.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=747759.0
What we know is that George Hood left up to £1500 in 1845, plus some property at Gowthorpe and Wren Lane, Selby (Tannery - Gowthorpe with Engine House and three dwellings, yards and workshops, Malt Kilns at Gowthorpe and Wren Lane), with dwelling and Yard Wren Lane.
G. H. had also acquired a substantial amount of property in Ousegate in 1838, mostly transferred immediately from George Hood to James Collinson (suggesting George Hood provided the money as a Mortgagor and James Collinson was Mortgagee) and which William Hood (his Son) was a Trustee on Collinson's Will (possibly until a repayment was satisfied) and was still a Trustee when William Hood the Trustee later ordered that Widow Collinson's Ousegate properties be sold. When it seems, they passed to another Collinson. James Collinson's Will, only seems to refer to William Hood as a Trustee, but its a long Will.
Jonathan Hutchinson features in G.H. Will and a John Adams seems to be mentioned when widow Sarah Hood offers the Tannery for sale.
Thanks for all your efforts, from you Rootschat stalwarts.

You have amassed some very good quality records of a nice little story !! rare pre 1841 census info of the adult life history from 1812 in Selby of George Hood d 1845 aged 60 taking you back to 1785, which is a lot more than most family history researchers have in that time period and you have Sarah Russel with her trade ( Straw Hat maker, tanner, grocer), life history which is rare info in its own right !! also her FH to work on.
I think a lot of FH trees going back from earliest post 1837 GRO death records, age at death estimated birth years in mid to late 1700's baptisms years, are calculated best guess only without substance but normal standard ;), and with most are limited single line PR info, no parent father named on marriages either pre 1837 and no age at burial entries pre 1750, unless very lucky to have a very wealthy FH records or gravestone MI's & bond allegations of intent to marry with age on.

Hi
Durham R.O., confirmed that St Mary's Gateshead 1 Oct 1786 Baptism of Geo: S of John Hood was theirs some time ago.
Checking if Tyne and Wear Archives have a more detailed Parish Register.
No Hood, in any of the Muster Rolls of Vessels with MARY in her name, for Shields and other Northern Ports. Because a John Hood was Master of the MARY of Inverness at Newcastle Quay in the newspaper advert for the 19th November 1782 Auction, arrived via Shields.
Checking if any Scottish record.
There are some Custom files for Newcastle and asked, if anyone knows what they contain

EDIT Re: Tyne and Wear Archives ...
Question: ... is there a Gateshead PARISH Baptism REGISTER for the 1st October 1786 HOOD baptism, besides the attached Bishop's Transcript copy and does the PR contain more information?
Answer: The ancient parish for the area of Gateshead was St Marys C of E. I have checked the microfilm copy we hold for this church and confirm that no additional details are recorded for the baptism of George Hood on 1 October 2016.

Towards the end of the above quote I made the suggestion that Jane Hood of Gateshead who married Robert Stodhart of Stepney, Middlesex, a Dissenting Minister, may be the same Jane baptised to John Hood the Waterman, at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne 12th January 1783.

British History Online says that William Wells devised the Manor of Catwick to a Richard Hood. A Brother was William Hood.
Marriage of one Richard Hood, mentions Scarborough (think one wife of Richard Hood was from Scarborough)?
From British History Online
"(fn. 48) In 1764 Joseph sold the reunited estate to William Wells, and it had passed by 1787 to Well's devisees Richard Hood and his brother William (d. 1852). (fn. 49)"
May be (fn. 48) or (fn. 49)
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/yorks/east/vol7/pp255-261#anchorn49
Richard Hood married Susanna Drew 31 Jan 1759 Catwick.
Richard Hood Wine & Sprit Merchant was baptised Leven 1771 and wife was Caroline Helen Hood (abt 20 yrs younger than Richard), born Castle Howard, appearing in the Census at Stamford Bridge.
Using newspapers, I can link Richard Hood of Stamford Bridge, born Leven [next to Catwick] to Wells Hood of York (born Dunnington), a Wine & Spirit Merchant. Richard Hood was also a Seed Merchant.
Also Wells Hood, almost certainly gets "Wells" from William Wells of Catwick.
Regards Mark
Wells Hood is reputed to be buried in York Minster?
But when I went to check if my George Hood was buried there in 2nd half of September 1845, the Borthwick had all of the York churches, except the Minster burials?
Richard Hood 24 of Stamford Bridge and Elizabeth Williford 20 of Scarborough got a marriage licence on 23 Apr 1794.
Marriage on same day, but says spouses father's name was William Hale (bride's surname still given as Williford) and her residence was York. (info from another Rootschatter)

Because of the reference to 'Pearl' and a Petition number in the separate Wills Calendar, I have contacted the Archives for assistance, regarding a possible Petition in relation to this Will and will obtain any copies.

Them bond allegation ages at intent to marry have been known to be wrong anyway ie:- Elizabeth Gibson b 1759 by age at intent to marry.(blind love the root of many a fib ;D) at a guess suggest - knock 3 years off (say she was circa 17 or 18 working away from home like a maid/cook)
1760 to 1764
age at death +/- 2 years Full acceptable range for Lizzy born 1757 to 1766 and a tiddly bit more

I do have access to HoC Parliamentary Papers, nothing readily jumping out at me regarding Joshua Hood or the other fella whose name has disappeared :)
There is a mention of a 'George Hood' from collections at York, being fined 5s in 1830 for 'permit and goods not agreeing' :)

Hello All
Thanks for your replies.
The 9th November 1795 Will of Joshua Hood Quarter Master of H. M. Ship Commerce de Marseilles, is from the Admiralty (ADM 48) Series reference documents at Kew.
John Hood of North Shields was the Brother of this Joshua Hood Quarter Master, see the Will extracts.
I attach a piece about the ship from the Cumberland Pacquet, 30th June 1795, with reference to this ship being brought away by Lord Hood from Toulon, December, 1793.
I will see what else I can find.

So if Elizabeth Hood nee Gibson passed away, John Hood could have remarried a Mary, they could be the Hoods that pass away in Selby.
There seems to be some gaps in the Tynemouth BT's as it skips from Dec 1787 burials to Baptisms starting Jan 1792. 1793 is then missing altogether.
Within this period there is a marriage between John Wood & Mary Cuitt.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NDN1-CRN
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ip9/
Shire Moor was the abode for the 1793 1783 baptism of Eleanor d/o John Hood, Mariner :-\
Also found a transcription of a marriage between William Glenton & Elizabeth Wood, Tynemouth 1788:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N6P3-35P
I cant remember now if anyone traced what happened to Elizabeth d/o George Hood baptised All Saints 1767, but a 1788 marriage would put her at 21 years old.
I think the original PR really needs examining, as the transcripts often omit important additional detail, never mind the confusion between Hood & Wood.

Apologies, yes, it does say baptized in October 1762 - I obviously cant read my own handwriting ::)
I couldn't decide if it definitely said Hood though, or if I just think it does because I want it to!
Whilst I was typing dobfarm & Claire have just posted too. Is the 1753/4 online?
Added: Just checked FS and there are several children of William Reed, so probably need to check these to see if they confirm him as a cooper, in which case its another one to scratch out :(

Must admit Jomot I SO want it to be Hood :)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZG7-NPC
Sorry to disappoint, I have this Scarborough 1871 Census page printed off and it should be transcribed as HOOD.
This is James Hood, son of my George Hood and Sarah Russell who married Selby in July 1815 and James and Sarah Hood's children (Sarah Hood nee Arundel).
In Sarah Hood's (nee Arundel) lineage according to Goughy, there is illegitimacy involving Wilkinson, so Wilkinson won't help either.
I wonder what is happening as it use to search okay with Hood, on the Library Ancestry!

Hello All and Thank you
Jomot you are correct (but only in part) that the "Commerce de Marseilles" did not leave Port again.
Unclear if Any Lives Were Lost or Not
Portsmouth, Saturday, May 2. ... It is at present uncertain whether any lives are lost or not; however, we are happy to add that no other man of war in the harbour received any damage in consequence of the above accident.
Terrible Loss of Life
The local newspaper of 11th May (extract at Reply #55) confirms terrible loss of life and damage did occur to other ships. The unmanned cannons of the Boyne also began firing and an explosion occurred.
Commerce de Marseilles to change name to Boyne
Several newspapers report shortly after the ship Boyne burnt out at Spithead, in a little sentence under Admiralty instructions, it states that the "Commerce de Marseilles" will change her name to the Boyne.
Captain of the Boyne Cleared
The Captain of the Boyne was cleared at a Court of Inquiry on the 19th May 1795 at Portsmouth.
Captain of the Boyne Transferred to the Commerce de Marseilles (now renamed Boyne)
The Captain was effectively transferred from H. M. Ship Boyne to H. M. Ship Boyne (ex Commerce de Marseilles renamed Boyne).
Death in Service = Date of Discharge = Date of Death
However, as you spotted Jomot, Joshua Hood died and almost certainly on his date of Discharge, being 1st May 1795, the date of the Boyne fire.
Both Ships Names on the Will Outer
I get the feeling Joshua Hood may have been on the Boyne, or his death caused by the Boyne (perhaps a cannon firing) on 1st May 1795 - "Boyne Joshua Hood".
Both ships, Boyne and the Commerce de Marseilles are on the Will outer.
The Will outer suggests H. M. Ship Boyne is linked to his death. Oldest trick in the book to leave ambiguity and can cover your backside later.
Pearl, Possible Misspelling for Parl.
I've seen Pearl as a misspelling for Parl., an abbreviation of Parliament, so there has possibly been some challenge made and decided in 1797.

Still can't find a marriage for Joseph and Hannah
Have also found a report of something that happened on the Boyne. Only a portion of it, but thought you might be interested
"" Boyne :" slops are usually sold on the main deck: the Defendant produced samples to ascertain whether his directions had been followed: some of the men said, that they were not in want of any cloaths, but were told by the Defendant that if they did not take them, he would punish them; and others, who stated that they were only in want of part of a suit, were obliged to take a whole one, with anchor buttons to the jacket, such as are usually worn by petty officers only. The cloathing of the crew in general was light and adapted to the climate of the West Indies, where the ship had been last stationed. Soon after the delivery, the "Boyne" was burnt, and the crew dispersed into different ships. On that occasion, the Plaintiff having expressed some apprehensions for himself, was told by the Defendant "Captain Grey (the Captain of the 'Boyne') and I will see you paid ; you need not make yourself uneasy." After this the commissioner came on board the "Commerce do Marseilles" in order to pay the crew of the "Boyne" ; at which time the Defendant stood at the pay table, and having taken some money out of the hat of the first man who was paid, gave it to the Plaintiff; the next man refused to part with his pay, and was immediately put in irons. The Defendant then asked the commissioner to stop the pay of the crew, who answered that it could not be done.""
Dated: 27 Nov. 1797
-
Nice summary Mark, although I'd assumed - wrongly it seems - that 1797 was his death and he'd simply been discharged from the original Boyne on that date.
It will be interesting to hear what the archives have to say about the petition, but perhaps its worth re-posting the snippets and the other information separately to see if any experts can shed any further light on them. Seaweed is usually the 'local expert' on all things maritime.
-
Hi
Thank you for the replies.
Jomot, it seems the Boyne's cannons must have been left primed to fire when the Boyne was abandoned. As the unmanned canons opened fire on ships nearby and other boats in the rescue.
Thank you dobfarm and Claire, re other possible Hoods.
The shipping element of the research, Sunderland / Hartlepool / North Shields is interesting.

As assumed George Hood's born circa 1785/1787 - thus at 21 years of age with a skill ??? in say average year 1807 +/- a year. We have 2 known George hood's - one Gateshead 1786 (no infant or adult burial found or as an adult marriage for the Gateshead George Hood.) as an infant and another in Selby 1812 on the land tax.
Question of food for thought - where were the two George's (or one of the same) ??? on the land tax 1806 and years to 1811
-
Hello dobfarm
I was looking at the images of the copy Muster Rolls of the "Centurion".
Where the copy signatures for the "Centurion" are, it says:-
a) Mr Hood and has been signed by Thos Hewson.
b) John Hood's age is fluctuating too much on the "Centurion" 1788 to 1790, as though Hewson is guessing.
c) Subsequent Muster Rolls of the "Centurion also signed by Hewson, have left HOOD's birthplace blank.
John HOOD didn't fill in the Muster Rolls of the "Centurion", but have been filled in by someone guessing John Hood's age & signed by the Thos Hewson (on HOOD's behalf), likely of Hewson & Co., Hull.
The Abode of John Hood is either given as Hull or Selby, in all the rolls.
I'm afraid the only thing confirmed is that John Hood, Master Mariner, born Scarborough resided at both Hull and Selby 1780s.

Perhaps, a bit too early for me to chip this in, but this might be Robert Hood's father?

John Hood and Anthony Hood were both Hoastmen at Newcastle. See the yellow extracts from a Table in a book (attachment on Reply 594)

Also I'm told the business and hospitality of these Coal Trading Merchants would likely be conducted in a Public House or Inn. Possibly the old Pub the Ship, South Shore, Gateshead. Perhaps John Hood, Publican of the Ship 1787 was related to the Hood Hoastmen?
Also placing the Land Tax transcriptions side by side (1789 & 1811) suggests Representatives of A. Hood Esq took over the same premises once occupied by John Hood in 1789. Reply 593 at the bottom of page ...

Are you thinking, what I have been thinking, that one of the possibilities could be that John Hood the Father of Geo Hood, baptised 1st October 1786 Gateshead might be related to a Hoastman.
Apparently some Publicans of old, did have other earning sidelines, or possibly we have two John Hoods in the Gateshead area, or even a visiting John Hood, Agent or Mariner.

Only if one looks for or finds the right archive (similar to finding the source of George Hood's burial 1846 Selby Quaker burial ground, the relevant document found in certain archives with your persistence to find with the local Selby logic that pointed where it was) if such documents can be found to either accept or eliminate George Hood bapt 1786 Gateshead once and for all.

It seemed after Joshua Hood was discharged, he remained on board the Commerce de Marseilles until he died. His previous H.M. Ship was the Prince and seems Joshua was also linked to the Ship Boyne.

Port in every storm or there are 2 (Ports) ends to every ships journey or more en-route Is/was John Hood of Selby & Scarborough the same John Hood of North Shields in his path of life as a mariner.
If memory serves me right ? John Hood of Scarborough - his dad was a George.
George Son of John Hood bapt Gateshead ( another port) 1st Oct 1786
George Hood resided Selby (another port) circa 1812 to age 60 at death 1846 = estimate year of birth 1786 and his fathers first name was ????
Quote you
Will of Joshua Hood, Quarter Master of H.M. Ship Commerce de Marseilles, written 9th November 1795, says his Brother was John Hood now Residing in North Shields Northumberland near the Custom House Quay.
Looks like Joshua's Father was George Hood, baptised All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne 1764 (From FS, not checked)

Thanks, but not known if old George Hood of Scarborough, Mariner born about 1708 and Maudlin born about 1710 (parents of John Hood buried Selby 1819) and George Hood the possible Father of Joshua Hood born Newcastle upon Tyne are the same George.
