Title: Cutter "Hero" 1875 abandoned near Waitara 22 July 1875
Post by: Tgapitbull on Tuesday 23 August 16 02:10 BST (UK)
Can anybody help?

The cutter "Hero" was owned by John Atkinson Walker, Kaipara, Mill Manager; Charles Watson, Auckland, Mariner and Alfred Barnes, Onehunga, Agent.
On 6 July 1875 it left the Kaipara with a cargo of 19,800 feet of sawn timber and 6,500 shingles consigned to Messrs Webster Bros, Waitara.  The crew were as follows:
Captain Robert Dobel (also spelt Dobell and Noble)
George Gordon (Steward)
Edward Terry (Seaman)
Alfred Hunt (17 year old boy - sole survivor)
The crew abandoned ship with 3 crew drowning.  The cutter was towed into Mokau and was later sold at auction on 28 September 1875 to new owners.
A newspaper report on Paperspast and also in the book "Shipwrecks on and off the Taranaki Coast by Margaret de Jardine c 1984 mentiones the following:
"At the end of July one of the bodies was washed ashore at Mokau and was buried in the sand high up on the beach (I understand from Ian Whittaker, Tainui Historical Museum that this body was located in recent times and reburied in the Mokau cemetery?)  A few days later the two remaining bodies were found at Mokau and Constable Lethbridge was  sent out from Waitara to bury them.  One was an elderly man (Captain Dobell, and the other a young man with several tattoo marks".

Captain Dobel left behind a wife (Maria) and 7 children according to newspaper reports.

I have checked the NZDIA death index but can't find the crew members listed in the index.

Can anybody assist with details of where they might have been buried?
What happened to 17 year old Alfred Hunt?

Thanks
WNW

["I have checked the NZDIA death index but can't find the crew members listed in the index".]

The reason being it appears the bodies were not formally identified. If indeed that was even possible. At least one was found and buried by local Maori.

I am still searching for information on Captain Doble's date/place of birth to determine his age at the time of his death.

Interesting that he was the Mate on the schooner "Tyne" which was wrecked off the coast of Tasmania in early December 1861.

I also found in the Appendix to the Journal of the House of Representives, 11 July 1883 that an application (No. 17) by Maria Doble for a land grant was declined.  Her application was based on Robert Doble joining the Auckland Naval Volunteers on 29 June 1860 and being discharged on 30 November 1867.

I have still to check this out.

Annie Louisa Doble married Francis Edmund Bryne in 1917, NZ
Frederick William Doble married Eleanor Reade in 1912, NZ

Thanks Minniehaha.  If you could take a look for a death notice this would be great.

I am also looking for descendants of Alfred Hunt as well and constructing a family tree.

Alfred and Bridget's daughter Violet Stanislaus Hunt married James White Harding in 1911.  They had 4 children:
James Hunt Harding 1912-1991
Violet Olga Hunt Harding 1913-1997.  Married Norman Everard Patterson
Betty Hunt Harding 1914-1914
Joffrey John Hunt Harding 1916-1975

I have not yet been able to identify any children of Violet's siblings yet.

In NSW unassisted immigrants I have found the following:

Robert Doble, Chief Mate, age 25 - British
"Matador" from Hobart Town to Sydney, NSW arriving 3 June 1859

Robert Doble, Chief Officer, age 27 - England
ship Barque "Kate" of Auckland from Auckland to Sydney, NSW arriving 20 June 1862

This would make his year of birth c 1834 and around 40 years of age in 1875.

I now have a copy of the marriage registration for Robert Doble and Maria Conway.

They were married on 29 April 1861, St Mathews church, Auckland by the Rev David Jones.  Robert was of "full age" and underneath is written 26 and Maria Conway, Minor.  Witnesses were James RIBBLE, Mariner, Hob--town and James CONWAY, Senter(?), Auckland.

This would make Robert's year of birth as 1835 and 40 years of age 1870.

Thanks JM for these links.  I have been looking at the site Mariners & ships in Australian waters.

One of the witnesses to Robert Doble's marriage was James Ribble.  I have found him as the Captain of the schooner "Tyne" which left Port Chalmers on 18 November 1861 for Hobart.  The vessel was wrecked 3 miles off Cape Pillar.  Robert Doble was a Mate on this vessel.

Yes ... the Probate record is there.  ;)    [Digitised ... but not indexed by name as yet ...]

So you need to use the "Browse through .... images" > select the Court (Auckland) > select the year (1929) > the batch number (you're looking for Probate "P149") ... have a rough guess at where "149" might be in the batch.  It takes a while to flick through and find.

If correct, further details about her family........

[Symonds Street cemetery records]

Abstract   The Anglican Sexton's list has James Conway at Block C 76 and Susan and Susanna at C77. According to the late 1950's tombstone transcriptions James Conway died aged 66 years and his wife Susan Conway died aged 74 years, a son and daughter were Susanna and William, and James John Conway died 11 August 1920 aged 79 years.

The St Pauls register has James Conway buried 24 October 1865 aged 66 years of Albert Street, Susan Conway buried 25 August 1872 aged 70 years of Mount Street, Susan Conway buried 20 May 1874 aged 29 years of Mount Street and George William Conway an infant who died 6 December 1858 and was buried 7 December 1858.

The Town Clerk's file 303/36 of 20/12/1932 at Auckland City Council Archives has a Miss M. J. Conway complaining of damage to a Conway tombstone in the Anglican section - this is the most likely one.
Early 1900's repairs to the Wesleyan/Anglican section refer to three children of John Conway, and describe the grave as having "no fence, headstone at West end".
Subjects   Conway, James, d.1865; Conway, Susan, d.1872; Conway, Susan, d.1874; Conway, George William, d.1858; Conway, William; Conway, James John, d.1920; Conway, Mary Jane; Conway, -; Conway, Susannah; Conway, William Henry
Symonds Street Cemetery
Notes: The Anglican Memorial has James Conway, Susan Conway, Susannah Conway (daughter), William Henry Conway (son) and James John (son) Conway.

It is likely that it is the family.  When Maria Conway married Robert Doble a witness to the marriage was a James Conway.  It appears that his occupation was "Senter" as this appears after his name.

I would like to thank everyone who assisted me with information.

The Department of Internal Affairs has now registered the death of Robert Doble.  I have been unable to have the deaths of GORDON and TERRY registered due to insufficient information.

I will be passing a copy of the death certificate to the Mokau Museum for their records and a copy to a living relative that I have located in the UK.

This exercise was a marathon not a sprint.

Rest in Peace Captain Doble!
