Title: Wells history - mid 1700s - Pristrow (or perhaps Priest Row)
Post by: Shirl_R on Thursday 25 August 16 03:25 BST (UK)
Hello

I have come across a record of burial (from 1740s) at St Cuthberts, Wells which shows the deceased was "of Pristrow".  My guess is that Pristrow may actually be Priest Row, a street which runs beside St Cuthberts church.  I have also found reference (mid 1600s) to a "tenement in Prieston Row, [also written as 'Priston Row'] with a garden & stable in Beggars Street".

As such, I hoping that someone with local history knowledge can advise whether Priest Row may have been called 'Pristrow' in earlier times, or confirm whether Pristrow, Prieston Row, Priston Row and Priest Row are all variations of the same place, and is in fact a street in the city of Wells.

Thank you
Shirl

Priston Rowe was the common rendering of Priest Row from about 1450 to 1650. Was also spelled Prysten.

Hello Stan

Thank you for reply.  Is the information taken from some publication, or similar?  If so, are you able to give details of where it is recorded.

Thanks again
