Does anyone have an old map of the area just north of Llansilin around 1850?
In 1841 William Andrew (aged 30) and family were living at the Old Turnpike, Lledrode and I wondered what the location of that dwelling might be.

Some of mu ancestors where there around then.
Here's one map:

Brilliant map! I can't seem to locate a 'township' called Lledrode either on that map or modern day map. The census summary indicates Lledrode is north of the turnpike road from Oswestry to Llansilin (now the B4580) but the only thing on either map is a single dwelling called Lledrod. None of the dwellings on my census sheet are shown by name on the old map. They lived in 'The Old Turnpike' so it must have been on the B4580.

It's called Lledrod (no e) and is marked in two places. I would think the old turnpike is the road leading from Oswestry to Llansilin - I'll try and enlarge the map.
Try this:

Have you got the census details? I might be able to locate it from there as I grew up not far away.
-
Here is the census sheet, but none of these dwellings appear on the old map. It was shown as a township called Lledrode.
-
Here is the 1841 summary sheet describing the location. There just don't seem to be any dwellings in this location on the map.
-
I've checked around various maps - and will try some of my books on the area later today.
I see the next house and those over the page are in Rhydycroesau - I think it's most likely to be close to there as it was more of a hamlet than Lledrod.

In 1851, I see that there are 3 households listed as 'Old Gate' * next to Rhyducroesau, so I think that is whee it is.
I see that your Andrews are in Glynceiriog in 1851 :)
* and a marginal note has them as Rhydycroesau.

Think I've found proof positve :)
A list of existing Tollgate Houses - one listed in Rhydycroesau 'just over the bridge in Wales'

Think this is it today:

Sorry, didn't realise you had replied. I agree with what you say, but what puzzles me is that none of the dwellings on the census sheet are shown on the old map, whereas at least some house or farm names are usually shown. What I have noticed however is the letters TP in the centre of Rhyd y Croesau which I assume means turnpike. Maybe that is 'The Old Turnpike' where they lived?

I haven't seen the note you mention in the 1851 census.

Wow! Just seen your toll list and the pictures of the dwellings. You are good. Do you think those dwellings are the actual ones? One of them being The Old Turnpike?
Wow.

Wow.
I think it's likely as the buildings are certainly there on the old map:

Strangely, my parents had good friends who lived just up the side road from there and we visited quite often. I remember old houses being there but didn't take much notice of them then.

The houses look really lovely today and such a beautiful setting. This is where my great grandmother Sarah Andrew was born. If you look on the 1841 census you'll see a baby listed as N/K (not known). It took me ages to realise this was her. Her birth registration is under 'unnamed female' so it wasn't very easy to order the certificate for someone with no name. When it arrived, guess what, there was no name on the birth certificate either! I've never seen such a thing before or since.
I notice there's a little church just down the road where the children may have been baptised.
Many many thanks for this, I would never have found this without your old maps and toll list. :-*
