Title: Watch & Clock Maker lookup offer CLOSED
Post by: Siouxzie on Saturday 23 July 05 13:10 BST (UK)
I recently ordered "Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World" Vol 2 by Brian Loomes, from the library at a cost of £3.80.  I guess I was hoping for some information; but really all it is, is a list.  Disappointed to say the least; yes my ancestors are there, but only names and dates, not even their relationship to one another.  I know more than this already.  I was looking for proof of a clock and watch making dynasty.

Still if any rootschatter out there thinks their ancestor might be included in this volume, I'll do a look up for you.  You might be lucky some entries have a little more info attached, such as apprentiship. This weekend only, for Tuesday, I am off on my hols and book is going back to the library.

I've got Samuel Maddock Over Budworth (Cheshire) 1834. W  (W stands for watchmaker,  1834 presumably is the year he started in business
Charles Maddock Over 1865 - 78 ( Again presumably his business years as he was born in 1822.  Except for 1881 Census has him still listed as a watchmaker in 1881.)

And it does not clear up the matter of George Maddock 1848 Middlewich, who I also believe is connected to my Maddock watchmakers, but I don't know how.  As Walter born 1841 son of a George Madddock who is a watchmaker is at Samuel Maddock's house on census night in 1841.  I'll have to come at that one from another direction.

Hello Suzanne,

There are DALTON clockmakers from Church Lawford in Warwickshire on my children's paternal line.

A website says:
" SAMUEL DALTON of RUGBY ~ circa 1800 Samuel Dalton is recorded in McKennas Watch & Clockmakers of Warwickshire as working in Rugby between 1786-1810. Two other Daltons, possibly related, are also recorded working nearby in Church Lawford ~ Daniel Snr. 1722-93 and Daniel Jnr. 1793-1801. Both repaired and maintained the clock at Leamington Hastings church."

I once had an email from someone who owns a clock "made by Daniel Dalton of Church Lawford who was baptised 14 Nov 1736 and buried in Church Lawford in Feb 10 1793. He was a clockmaker active from 1759. ...  There is another example of his clocks in Warwick Museum."
Daniel (bap 1736- d 1793) was a 1st cousin of my children's 4ggfather.

If there is any information in the book on the DALTON clockmakers of Warwickshire, I would appreciate a lookup.

Many thanks,

JAP

Hi JAP
sorry there isn't a mention of them in this particular volume. but maybe they are mentioned in volume one.  Volume one was written by G.H. Baillie and volume two is a supplement to it and does not repeat any clockmaker that was detailed in volume one unless new facts had been found.

The only Dalton's in this volume are in; Hartlepool, York, Dudley and Birmingham.  The last two appearing to be the same person, W.H. Dudley 1868 and William Howard Birmingham 1880.

It is exciting, that you've got  an example of a clock in a museum.  I came across an article on the web about a Maddock clock being auctioned, the journalist writing the piece had asked if anyone had conections to the family to contact him, unfortunately it was a couple of years too late by the time I found it.

Hi, Siouxsie,
This is very kind of you! - I have a clock and watch maker in my family called Thomas GURNER, who plied his trade in the Ickleton and Sawston area of S. Cambs between the 1860's and 1896, when he died.  He may also have had associations with Saffron Walden, just across the county border in Essex.
Does he get a mention in your book...?

Hi Siouxzie,

I'm looking for Edward REDWOOD, a watchmaker, probably of St Pancras, Middlesex. Date would be around 1838.

Post by: Keith Sherwood on Sunday 24 July 05 14:38 BST (UK)
Hi again, Siouxzie,
Actually, this bit of bare evidence does narrow down things in the case of Thomas Gurner, as he was living in Sawston with his young family in 1871, and although I knew he was back in Ickleton by 1877, wasn't sure exactly when he moved back to the family home.  Some time between 1871 and 1875, therefore...
Thanks so much for this, and glad to see that Rootschatters are benefiting somewhat from your disappointing short-term loan.  Hope you have a relaxing holiday, wherever you may be heading.
Keith

Hi Siouxzie, thank you very much for your offer.  If you have enough time, I would be pleased to know if there are any Lunts in Liverpool mentioned, I know there is a John Lunt, probably in the late 1700's so it may be a little early for the volume you have.

Thank you.

Hi Siouxzie,

Could you please have a look for a clock/watchmaker in Birmingham, UK by the name of Watkins?

My father-in-law has an old wall clock made by a T.H Watkins, who he claims was his great grandfather. The certificates I have bought indicate that his great grandfather was  Henry Watkins, a watchmaker of Birmingham. On one certificate I have this same person referred to as Thomas Theophilus Henry Watkins.

I understand that others in the family were also in the clock/watchmaking trade in Birmingham too.

I think the period I am looking for would be around 1850.

Thanks.

Wotty

Hi Wotty,
Lots of Watkins, so I'll just do the Birmingham ones.
Unfortunately there is no indication of relationships. Although perhaps Henry Jnr is the son of Henry ?
Henry, Birmingham 1850 - 80
Henry jnr, Birmingham 1880
John Stickley Birmingham, 1828 - 60
Theophilus Henry, Birmingham 1842
Thomas, Birmingham 1868
Thomas Henry, Birmingham 1835

Hello Siouxzie

If you have time before your holiday, could you look up SAMUEL BOWTELL? He was listed as a clockmaker on his son's marriage certificate in 1858. He probably came from Middlesex.

Many thanks!

 :)

Hello back from not so sunny Cornwall,
and luckily for the three late comers I didn't get an opportunity to take library book back before I went - so:
peanuts
Tollady, Alfred Edward. Bury St Edmunds 1865-75
Tollady, D. Bury St Edmunds 1853 - 65.
No entries for anywhere else in this volume, but maybe in Vol One.  Did you mean Matlock Bath ?
JenBram
Bramwell A. Stockton 1898
BRAMWELL & HARBRON. Darlington 1898
Bramwell, Thomas. Alston. 1869 - 79
miss marple
Sorry no Bowtell in this volume

Book going back tommorow now.
