Hello
I'm researching a Hutchinson family from Camerton. Five members of the family were sentenced to 7 years penal servitude for stealing geese from Great Broughton. Only the son George was deported. The father died onboard a prison hulk, the mother stayed in Carlisle gaol until being pardoned, the 2 sisters served their time in Millbank Penitentiary. On their petition for clemency they say they have a brother who is a blacksmith in Dearham.
Does anyone know how I can find this man
Thanks

Hello
have you got an approximate birth years for the two sisters? And their first names/parents names?
-
Is this your George - baptised Camerton 29 Sep 1805 - parents William & Ann Irwin.
-
Morning Milliepede
The parents are William Hutchinson and Ann Irving, the 2 sisters are Jane b1804 and Mary b1806. Brother George b1805 was deported. There are 3 other siblings, Martha b1814, John b1818 and Michael b1820. I'm trying to find what happened to these 3 when the rest were sent to prison

Thanks for the info.
There's a Martha Hutchinson death - burial Camerton 18 April 1815 age 0
-
1841 Census ref HO107 162 16 26
Peter Hutchinson, age 50, Blacksmith, born Cumberland
Address - Prospect, Dearham, Cockermouth
Worth checking out?

In the newspaper article in 1823 about the court case, it mentions 3 small children in the house the oldest being 9, this ties in with Martha's year of birth, so I'm guessing the death in 1815 isn't her. But it's the brothers i'm looking for.
I saw the census showing Peter Hutchinson, but he was born 1791, our boys were 1818 and 1820. I did think perhaps this was an uncle
-
That was my thought - William's brother.
-
Its a possibility, but William was born in 1850 so there's a big gap in ages
-
thought William was the father?
-
Yes, that's correct
-
Sorry, William was born 1750
-
Thanks - the "1850" did throw me!

Just another senior moment

Hello - goodness, that's interesting! Peter Hutchinson (born 1791) was my great great great grandfather. He was a blacksmith in Dearham and married Mary Moses. Have you tried Cumberland roots.co.uk.Dearham/htm?Lots of good stuff on there.
By coincidence, my cousin, another Peter Hutchinson, went to Australia voluntarily and is still there. I'm still near Dearham.
Best wishes,
Gill

Hi Gill
Thanks for your reply.
I have lots of Hutchinsons in my tree, many are basket makers and travellers. As was William. I still haven't connected Williams family to my tree, nor your Peter. William had 3 sons, and it was either John or Michael who worked as a blacksmith at Dearham. They must have been related to your Peter.do you know of any John or Michael. I would love to know what info you have on Peter. My Hutchinsons were very intertwined with the Berry's also basket makers, the Knowles and Keenan's who were Potters. Do you know of any connection to these names in your family.

Hello David,
Unfortunately. I haven't come across any of the names you mention.
Peter was born in 1791 and the 1841 census has him listed as a blacksmith at Prospect, Dearham. He had three children, William, Jane and Peter. William married Jane Parkin, but was killed in a mining accident in 1845. Jane died either in childbirth or shortly afterwards, leaving their child, another William, to be brought up by his elderly Parkin grandparents. Jane is buried at Camerton.
Have never come across any basket makers etc - they all seemed to be miners after Peter's time. As you will know, there were lots of potteries in the Dearham area, so who knows?
Will let you know if I find out more.

Hi Gill
Many travelling families took more permanent jobs either in winter, or as the families settled down. The families I mentioned can all be found in Dearham at some time or other. Some took jobs down the mines there, some bought pottery from Ostles pottery and hawked them between Maryport and Cockermouth and even further.
So many coincidences in often lead to something. Even the Camerton burial ties things, why was she buried there and not Dearham ??
A bit more detective work I think
I'm on holiday in Ireland at the moment, back home Wednesday, I'll dig more then
PM me your e-mail address we can talk there when I get home

Hi David,
We are right at the bottom of the Derwent Valley and my signal is rubbish. Let me know how to pm you and I will do it. I did write a reply, but it seems to have disappeared into the ether.

Hi, my cousin is a direct descendant of George Hutchinson who came to Australia, Do you know what happened to Jane and Mary after their release. The prison report stated they were probably going to live with a brother who was a blacksmith in Dearham, but did not state who the brother was. any info would be appreciated regards

Hi
Ive researched this family quite a lot, I have lots of Hutchinson's on my tree, same area, same time, same naming patterns all basket makers so must be related somehow. I have looked hard for the 2 sisters but never found. If I remember correctly there were other children too.
PM me and we can contact there
