Could traveling circus employees also be known as commercial travelers?

According to my great-grandmothers marriage certificate her father was a commercial traveler.

And I know the boarding house she was living at was very popular with circus employees as the owners son went off with one.

A commercial traveller is a travelling sales representative or salesman, trying to get people to buy his firm's goods.
