I have been informed that a John Joseph Swinnerton who was born abt 1892 London England had
emigrated to New York abt 1901.
I can find no entry for John in the England BDMs records.
Or his entry into America for this time frame.
I can find him in the New York City census for 1920 and 1940 with family.
Can anyone see him in the records?
Thanks,
bswinno.

Samuel Swingeing and son John are shown in the 1910 census living with the Do naghue family at
West 58 th Street Manhattan Ward 22, New York, New York.
Samuel says that he was widowed.
The 1911 census for Bury Lancashire it shows Samuel's second wife Alice Monk living with son Frank
and her family. I wonder what went on there.
I have no further information as to what happened to Samuel in New York. Did he return back to his wife in England ? No sign of him anywhere.
Can anyone see him?
Thanks,
bswinno.

Probate for Alice Swinnerton

Sandra,
It's a strange one.
Alice reported as a widow when she died.Had Samuel returned from America we would find his death here.
So l assume he stayed there.

Are you sure that your Samuel married Alice Monk - ??
Manchester, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 - 11 October 1899 -Alice Monk (father Thomas Monk - labourer ) 38 Lord Street - spouse Samuel Swinnerton (father Simeon Swinnerton - rag merchant) widowed. 2 School Street. Pattern maker -

Thomas Monk 59
Ann Monk 60
James Monk 33
Mary Monk 31
Catherine Monk 29
Ellen Monk 27
Margaret Monk 21
Alice Swinnerton 35
Frank Swinnerton 4 months.
Sandra
-
Yes that's the correct one. Alice was Samuels second wife.
-
Seems strange they are living separately on the 1901 UK census ???
Sandra
-
Looks like they had separated as not at the same address in the 1901 Census. Then
the the of arrival into America is wrong.
-
Immigration dates are only as good as the informant who gives them.
Samuel wasn't mentioned in the probate record for his father Simeon in 1908.
Perhaps the marriage certificate for son John would tell us if Samuel was alive in 1917 ???
We know Samuel was deceased on the marriage of Frank Swinnerton 21 June 1930.
Sandra
-
So Frank was married in 1930 I dont have the details for that.
Then Samuel had died before the marriage.
We know by the info given n 1914 when daughter Ann traveled from Liverpool
that Samuel was alive.
So he would have died sometime between 1914 and 1930.

Thanks for those certificates Sandra.
Father Simeone probate mentions two other surnames.
He had many daughters probably son in laws.

Such a surreal moment as this is my Great Grandfather John Joseph Swinnerton. I am just getting into Genealogy and started with my Grandfather (John Joseph Swinnerton born 18 Feb 1919) and found this forum. What I know from my grandfather’s is that his dad (John) and mom (Hannah Carey) had his sister (Annie, I think) and him. His mom – Hannah – died when he was four, and his dad remarried her sister (my grandfather’s aunt), Gertrude and had the remaining children.
When my grandfather died in 2000, I believe his siblings: Samuel and Edie Utley were still alive. I am uncertain if that is still true (as it is 16 years later).
Thanks for letting me follow along in your research and I am excited to know my lineage better.

Hi ,
Further to the elusive Samuel Swinnerton. I have been informed that in the 1915 Census he was
an patient at the Kings Park State Hospital, Smithtown, Suffolk, New York.
But his place of birth is incorrect which we information can be incorrect.
Question Are these hospital records available online?
