Hello!
Any ideas please as to the location of this cut down Carte-de-Visite?
HARBOUR scene Scotland?
Could it be Scottish? I think it might!
This was a commercially produced C-d-V. No lettering on reverse or details of photographer (possibly trimmed off. No codes on any vessels. Distinctive row of houses in background. (I don't think this will be unidentified for long....)!
With thanks~001uk

This is just a guess as I am away from home at the moment. Portpatrick?

There appears to be lettering on the bottom right in the top photo and bottom middle of the second, so a high res scan of the writing might be helpful.

I think I see where you mean. However, there's a line of circular items hanging on or propped up against the wall, look a bit like lifebelts which may appear to be lettering.

Tobermory?

I've hunted around for images of Portpatrick & Tobermory and I'm not getting good matches. ???
-
No, I can't find a match with Tobermory either at the moment. My other "instinctive" reaction - Aberaeron - hasn't proved fruitful either.
There is a quite distinctive three storey building in the picture,8 bays(?) wide, with what looks like twin entrances that might be worth focussing on.

Maybe Oban ?

Can I ask why you are so certain that it is Scotland?
-
Some similarities to Rothesay, but I haven't found an exact likeness...

Well done, Arthur

Well done Arthur-I looked at Rothesay and didn't spot it.I've just looked on Google Earth, the building is still there, but not named.I'll see if I can get a better view

Just that another (unrelated) photo that was with it was from Scotland

Well that had me confused for a minute or two.
I just came across this thread and wondered why people were guessing possible place names when there was a huge ROTHESAY written on the postcard!
Then I realised that the word was added after the place was found. ::)
Well done Arthur! :)

Me too (I think) - and many many years ago. But since Scotland had been suggested (and I thought the row of cottages looked Scottish too), it was a case of looking at pictures of Scottish harbours till I found the right one.
I'm still a bit frustrated at not finding an exact modern equivalent of the view, but the ones others have found, taken together, certainly confirm the location. I thought I might hit lucky with Google street view, as it seemed to go to the end of the pier, but when I got there I found myself boarding a car ferry ;D
And coming off the pier again, one of the possible views was obscured by some public conveniences, so this will have to do:
