Dear Members,
I am helping my wife and father in law trace their ancestors
My wife’s great grandfather was a George William Boardman (Colliery Stoneman ) - as marked on her gran/nans marriage certificate - the only link I can find to the previous Boardman generation
Alas I do not know where he was born/ lived or died. The only clue we have is one picture with him wearing regalia as if a mayor or on the Urban District Council somewhere in the UK
What has made my search near on impossible is the daughter, Mary or Anne Boardman we believe was adopted as I have been unable to trace her official birth record. The DOB we always had for her was 22/11/1921
I have her son’s birth record (my father in law/ wife’s father) and Anne or Mary was living in Cullercoats an urban area of North East England in 1943
I understand George Boardman died somewhere between 1921 and 1944 (he is marked as deceased on her marriage certificate in 1944)
Can anyone advise my best course of action for what seems like an impossible search
Hope to hear back from soemone who can help
Kindest Regards
Steve

What I can glean from the photo is a knitted tie & collar stiffeners which put together would have a start date of late 1920's. It could easily have been taken in the 30's. He looks to be well into his 50's & maybe a well preserved 60 something. So I think you should be looking for him being born 1870-80 ish.
Can you put this on a scanner & take a high res. scan of the end.
-
Birth registrations for George William Boardman:
June qtr 1865 Bolton Registration District
Dec qtr 1869 Manchester RD
Mar qtr 1870 Ecclesall Bierlow RD
Sep qtr 1870 Nantwich RD
Mar qtr 1876 Chorlton RD
Dec qtr 1877 Ecclesall Bierlow RD
Sep qtr 1879 Salford RD
Mar qtr 1888 Chorlton RD
Of course, he may have been registered as plain George?! ::)
-
Welcome from me as well :)
As Jim mentioned a more high res scan might be helpful - particularly of the emblem on the possible mayoral chains

Was he the Mayor of Ashington, 1926?
Jamjar
-
Hi Jamjar
That is what we were told - yes !!!!!!!!!!!
I gave up on this theory as a family memeber spent 3 hours in an Ashington mesuem and found no link to this
Please can you help as this may be the bissgest break through I have got
-
No, I just found the fact on an Internet search - Facebook Nothumberland Gazette - and it says that there is a photo with the information written on the back.
Jamjar
-
I was getting all excited then - that was me !!!! doh
I have put many many hours into finding who this person is , but was told he was Mayor of Ashington which after reserach seems false
-
What was George's wife's name?
Jamjar
-
Ashington Urban District Council only had a Chairman, not a Mayor!
Can't find a list of Chairmen, though?!
-
Sorry guys - We do not know anything what so ever about George William Boardman, so can give you no more clues
No DOB
No DOD
No place of residence
No wifes name
All we have is a name and job - Colliery Stoneman as marked on marriage certificate
The photo may be a red herring - we do not know for fact it is the same person
Photo passed down through the family and facts may have been distorted
-
There are only 3 George Ws on the 1939 register, to which I don't have access past the free search.
J.
-
Hi Jamjar
I am on ancestry.com with no access to the 1939 register
How would I go about access on these please ?
Thanks
-
You have to take out a sub. or buy credits I'm afraid. Unless someone on here who has one takes a look at this.
-
Findmypast and it's a subscription site. :'(
Someone will take a peek I'm sure.
Ashington is just up the way from Cullercoat, so it is possible there's a connection and that he died somewhere thereabouts.
J.
-
For those in the know, what would be the BDM registration areas for the two places?
J.
-
Thanks Jim1
Can anyone on here help me who has access to the 1939 register please ?
Thanks
-
Thanks Jamjar
Does anyone have a subscription to the 'find my past' 1939 register please
Thanks
Steve
-
Be patient Steve,
As you're on Ancestry have you checked the 1911 census, for the the two areas?
J.
-
Hi Jamjar
Yes the 1911 census brings up possibilities only / but nothing really stands out
One death record from 1922 in Newcastle was a no match
Steve
-
Thanks Jamjar
Does anyone have a subscription to the 'find my past' 1939 register please
Thanks
Steve
The index is free to search - once you have registered.
Can't find a Boardman in Ashington U.D.
Then again, maybe your local library has free FindMyPast access?
There is a George Boardman, born 1913, residing in Newcastle Upon Tyne?
Together with Florence (Flora) Boardman, born 1891.
-
KGarrad - Thank you
-
Thanks Jamjar

If his daughter married in '44, would a 1913 birth for him be too late?
Thanks
Steve

Isn't it only free to see the names on the 1939, but you have to pay to see the details?

Thank you
As his daughter/ or adopted daugher was born in 1922 I would have thought he would be born in the late 1800's to match
-

Yes, I too think 1913 would be too late.
Why do you think she was adopted?
J.
-
No birth record exsists of Mary Anne or Anne Mary Boardman in November 1921
I have found one born in Ashingdon under Lyme in 1919 but to a Bernard Boardman
It is a real mystery
-
Sorry I meant Newcastle under Lyme
-
If she was adopted why did she keep her original name & not take the name of her adoptive family ?
-
Yes Jim1 - thats why we question it ???
Though my research we found out her son/ my father in law was adopted although she was the biogical parent so PAC have even looked into it alas not finding anything !!!!!
My father in laws middle name is 'Boardman' so this must have been held dear to her ????
-
If she was adopted why did she keep her original name & not take the name of her adoptive family ?
Jim, I was adopted by my father's brother and, therefore, retained my birth surname.
Jamjar.
-
yes thanks for sharing that................Now if Bernard Boardman had a brother called George William this could be a breakthough, but sadly he does not
-
It's possible she was adopted by another family member which would account for her name.
Is there a possibility she was illegitimate & her mother's name was Boardman & her father's name was made up ?
-
Definite possibility Jim
-
What was the name of the family that brought her up?
-
Jim
Thirty years too late when we should have asked all the questions - if this was the case/ our family do not know and have no links / names etc to other family members/ adopted relatives/ possible siblings associated to Mary Boardman !!!!!
Yes I know its strange but the woman never talked about it and at the time nobody probed her
All the time growing up - my father in law never saw another family member of his mothers side
-
Do you know she was adopted or are you assuming she was as you haven't found a suitable birth? Apologies if you have already said.
-
Hi Amelia,
No to confrim we are assuming she was adopted as a birth record for her DOB 22nd November 1921
does not exsist in the public records libary
-
Ok, I would not assume that she is adopted because of that, given the fact that her own child was adopted (have I got that right?!) I can see that circumstances might make it more likely but there may be other explanations. 'm not familiar with the area of the country you are looking at so I consulted a map, looking at the place names you mention they are all in a relatively small area. Have you looked at Boardman families in that locality? Also, I would go a year or so either side of that date of birth for Mary / Anne it's very easy to get confused by one year, the day and month is more likely to be accurate. Given that she flipped names I would consider Ann/Anne/Mary or their own and also Annie/Anna. This is from my own experience on multiple occasions in my own family!
Also when did she die?
-
Does Ann/Mary give an actual address on her marriage certificate?
I don't suppose the witnesses are any clue.
Maureen
-
This may have been asked already so apologies if it has but have you found her on the 1939 Register ?
-

I had a look but didn't see anything.(doesn't mean she's not there :) ) With her birth as 1922,though,it may not show up.

Trying to answer people questions
Anne Mary died in Hull 09/06/1991
early Addesses I have is :
on birth certificate when had son (out of marriage/ oh the shame !!!!) - lived at: 5 Beverley Villas Cullercoats North Shields
On marrauge certificate lived at: 28 Dockwray Square, North Shields
-
If she had an illegitimate son why was his middle name Boardman & not his surname ?
-
Her son was born Nicola Boardman (yes this is a man’s name although highly unusual) - is this a clue ??
Mary gave him up for adoption and he went to an orphanage from 1943 - 1948
When she met her husband Kenneth Steele Newton and married in 1944 - they adopted Nicola back (as couple) in 1948 changing his name to Dennis, and making the Boardman his middle name
This his name now is Dennis Boardman Newton
-
I can think of 4 possible scenarios.
1) She's the legitimate child of GW Boardman but went unregistered.
2) She's the illegitimate child of GW Boardman who gave his permission for her to use his name but went unregistered.
3) She's the illegitimate child of ? registered under another name & "adopted" by a Boardman couple.
4) She's the illegitimate child of ? Boardman but went unregistered & made up a father's name.
There may be others.
1 & 2 I think are less probable than 3 & 4 with 4 being the most likely.
-
Thanks Jim 1
to confrim: In the course of my research we found out Mary Anne or Anne Mary had my father in law illegitimately and put up for adoption
When she met her husband they adopted him back and changed his name, so my father in law has had contact with PAC over finding out his roots - quite a shock for a 74 year old man who through his dad was his dad
Anyway PAC have not been able to find anything out about where his mum came from / or her roots , so if they can’t crack the case I wonder if I will ever solve this ???
The more research I have done am thinking you are right with theory 4 - and we will Unfortunately never find out the truth
-
When Anne/Mary was "adopted" it was before the Adoption Act so these things were arranged privately & few if any records were kept.
-
Hi Steve!
David from ancestry here! Glad to see the rootshat community rallying to the cause!
Been brewing over this a lot and one thing that stands out is the address given on Nicola/Dennis' birth cert - Beverley Villas.
According to this article, it appears that this is on the site of St Oswald's Home For Girls in Cullercoats:
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/lifestyle/nostalgia/remember-when-beverley-villas-cullercoats-7082348
A hunch tells me that this might be more than a mere coincidence; it is certainly worth eliminating from your enquiries! I'd get in touch with The Children's Society to see if they can locate Mary Ann Boardman in their archives:
http://www.calmview.eu/childrensociety/Calmview/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Persons&id=TCS%2fNAR%2f00270
Apologies if you've been down this route already.
Best of luck, and do let us know how you get on!
-
Hi David,
Good to hear from you on this site as well
Yes I googled the address and saw the article on St Oswald's Homes for Girls.
I am sure it noted that by the 1920's it had been turned into normal housing, but is this just more than mere coincidence I wonder.
I think there is a good posisbility she had a connection to it.
I will get in touch with The Children's Society to see if they can locate Mary Ann Boardman in their archives
Thanks again for your help
Steve
-
From what I can glean St Oswald's opened in Cullercoats in 1891, the original building became The Beverely Hotel in 1900, and the home then moved to a site just adjacent.
The home operated until 1939 when the girls were evacuated to Kendal and never reopened post war. The girls stayed on until 18 at St Oswald's. So if Mary Ann was born in 1921 she'd have been discharged a few weeks after the onset of war in 1939. I would imagine the Beverley Hotel employed many girls from St Oswald's over the years. Pure conjecture! But who knows!
-
Hi David,
Thank for your your thoughts on this - A real possibility I think
I have contacted my email the achives@childernssociety and hope they can find a trace
if not I think my search must come to an end !!!!!
-
Ashington Urban District Council only had a Chairman, not a Mayor!
Can't find a list of Chairmen, though?!
They may have also had Deputy or Vice Chairmen.

This might be of interest Steve given George William's occupation....Lancashire Evening Post , Dec 1910.
Could this be your George's Father?
Carol

Carol,
With you on board as my wingman - we are going to crack this I am sure
Again I will look into this
is the Sir name Dickinson Boardman (Double barrelled) on the middle name Dickinson ?
-
and the only deaths I can find:
Deaths Mar 1934 (>99%)
BOARDMAN George W 74 Wortley 9c 375
Deaths Mar 1942 (>99%)
Boardman George W 75 Liverpool N. 8b 381
May be worth looking at probate records for theses two.
Carol

Dear Rootschat members,
Due to DNA and massive help from an ancestry expect I have just managed to solve this mystery
My wife’s gran , hid a box of skeletons that all all got released on the revelation she was actually born a Dawson - Mary Dawson born 1914 in Ashington to a George William Dawson and wife Hannah Fenwick.
She had married Boardman , then ran away from her family , to marry for a second time saying her madden name was Mary Boardman with DOB 7 years younger than she actually was.
No wonder I could not find her or trace the family. All this time I was looking for a Boardman when it should have been a Dawson.
The man in regalia is her uncle who married her father’s sister, a man called John Bonnard 1977-1961 and the regalia was due to a position held as former president of Lancashire and Cheshire council of the national federation of Boot Trades Associates.
She must have used this picture to fabricate a story and escape to her new life.
Fascinating stuff after about a 7 year hunt for the truth.
Thanks for your kind help
Steve

Thank you Steve for the update on this. It's very satisfying when the mystery gets solved
