Title: Unknown Town - Can anyone help decipher it?
Post by: jhan on Sunday 18 September 16 20:22 BST (UK)
Hi there,

I am currently researching a part of my family that have been based in Dundee, Scotland for some time, but on a marriage certificate i have spotted that the bride appears to have been born in 'Co Monahan' (i am making an assumption that it should be Co Monaghan).  My issue is that i can't work out the name of the town.  No amount of Googling random possibilities is working.

Can anyone translate it for me? I wondered if some of you might have come across the place name on your travels. I have attached an image of the words on the marriage certificate. (i hope it's worked)

Thanks in advance,

Jenni

Thats the first i thought but i can only seem to find loose mentions of it so wasn't sure if there was a spelling mistake or something.

The only thing Google comes up with is it is mentioned in a book called 'Historical sketches of Monaghan : from the earliest records to the Fenian movement'.

http://www.logainm.ie/en/s?txt=in%3a100025&cat=BF&pag=-1&ord=ga   gets you all the townlands in Co Monaghan... even if you go Ctrl+F and only use 2 letters from the name, for example  in then only 2 are found.

Have you a name and father's name? Religion?

Using just    Tull    there are plenty of results

Her name is Mary Simpson, father is Patrick Simpson and mother is Jane Ann McMahon. Not sure about religion (I'm new to this side of things) but Mary was married in a Catholic church if that helps?

Thanks for your help!

Mary was married in 1855 (in Dundee) and was 26 years old. She died in 1918 (in Dundee) and was 81 years old. I have both of these documents but the ages have confused me as they are very different. I haven't found a birth yet due to this.

So born circa 1830... all you can do is Search the various Parish Registers for Births and work from about 1828..

Could it be Telayden, a townland just outside Monaghan town, but in the parish of Tydavnet?
