Title: James Allan & Family - Falkirk
Post by: andrew shanks on Saturday 23 July 05 21:33 BST (UK)
I am trying to identify the parents and also the descendants of James Allan and his wife Mary (possibly Gillespie) who I believe lived at Cauldhame Farm in Camelon, Falkirk.

I have the following information from the 1881 census which may help:

Family 804
Glasgow Road, Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
GRO Ref: 479-2

ALLAN James  Head  77 Farmer ( 141 Acres Of Which 107
ALLAN Mary    Wife   76  Farmers Wife
ALLAN John    Son    47  Farmers Son
ALLAN Maggie Grand 30 Dairymaid
THOMSON Alison Servant 16
MCLEAN James Servant 17
ALLAN William 30 Visitor Woodcutter
Munro John 37 Visitor Minister of Gospel
Munro Mary 37 Visitor Minister of Gospel Wife

I would be grateful for any assistance with this.

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk search for the death of James ALLAN, setting the bottom year to 1881, and setting the birth year as 1804 +/- 5 years, and there is only one possible match, in Falkirk.

A parent search in IGI on the LDS provides a number of matches for the parents, but all but two are submissions.

Looks like you have found them on the 1851 census.

If I can establish the parents of James Allan & his wife Mary I hope to tie this family group into my tree.

Regards

Andrew

Hi,
Just thought I'd mention that I've seen 1 or 2 Allan headstones within Slamannan Cemetery, near Falkirk. I *think* one of them was a James Ramsay Allan. Maybe it'll come in useful later on for you. If you're interested in more details, I can take digital photos next time I'm there (probably in the next few days).

Regards,

Alan.

Hi

Thanks very much for this.  I think that most of my Allans were in the Camelon area, although my gt grandmother Jessie Wood Allan was born in Pirleyhill Farm in Shieldhill.

I believe that another branch of my family, the Neilsons, farmed at Boxton in Slamannan from around the 1600s through until the mid 1800s, so if you see any old gravestones that may relate to them in Slamannan cemetary I would be very interested in receiving details.

Thanks again

Andrew

Hi,
Finally managed to get back to Slamannan Cemetery.
The results are on my web page at:
http://www.alanex.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/slamannan.htm

Only a couple of Allans there. Might be more among the unreadable stones, or even in the unmarked graves.
Unforunately I couldn't find any Neilson, however, I believe I seen a Kirkwood as mentioned in your profile. Not sure if you knew of any in Slamanna. Again, if it's of any use, I'll get hold of it next time I'm back.

Might pop along to Camelon Cemetry in Falkirk sometime.

Regards,

Alan.

Alan

Thank you for this.

I have looked at your web site and think that I might have a connection to the William Allan who died in 1945.  The other Allans on your site may also be related and I am checking this out with a cousin in Canada.

I am surprised that there are no Neilsons there as the family were definitely in Slamannan from the mid-1600s through to the mid-1800s.  Perhaps they found somewhere else to go.  I know there are definitely Allan and Neilson family members in Camelon Cemetary, so if you go there I would be very interested in your findings.

I don't know about Kirkwoods in Slamannan - most of them seem to have been a little further west in the Denny area.  I do have Wood relatives from Slamannan - not sure whether you came across any of them during your investigations?

Regards

Andrew

These are my ancestors. I have details going back to about 1650 and forwards to the early 1900's. However I think it would take soem time to list it all here.  You can find it on Genes Reunited under Robert Allan

There were a lot of Kirkwoods in the Denny area.  I have replied separately to your other recent post regarding the Gillespie family of Denny.

Hi Jammy40,

This is the correct family.  My original posting was 8 years ago and a lot of information has come to light since then.  We must be related, so I would be interested to know how you descend from James Allan and Mary Gillespie.  If you want to send me a PM we can discuss off board.
