Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to family researching and have been slowly building my tree on ancestry. I am a bit stuck on finding the mothers name for my great grandma Minnie Broadhead, married name Cundall. I purchased a marriage certificate for Minnie & Robert but it only gives fathers names. They were married in leeds in 1914 and her father was deseaed at time of marriage.
Minnie was born in west yorkshire/sheffield act 1891 and died in wakefield in 1962.
Any help on how I would go about finding her mum would be wonderful. I tried looking on census but didn't have much luck there either.

I found a tree on Ancestry showing Minnie (yours??) which shows a copy of her marriage certificate in which her father is shown as Thomas Broadhead, Brewer (deceased).
I couldn't find said Thomas in 1891 but did find him in 1881:
2 Bateson Row, Headingley with Burley, Leeds
Thomas Broadhead 41 Brewer born Pontefract, Yorkshire (shown as Ferrybridge on earlier
census)
Margaret Broadhead 35 born South Milford, Yorkshire
Ann Broadhead 8 born Leeds
Thomas Broadhead 5 ditto
Elizabeth Broadhead 4 ditto
Joseph Broadhead 2 ditto
Now it gets a bit odd - there are some other trees on Ancestry that show Thomas married Margaret Ann Sutton 12/11/1871 South Milford and the above children. However, they don't appear to have found the family on census after 1881, nor do they have dates of death of either Thomas or Margaret - just say Thomas died in Hunslet!
Found something interesting at the moment which I'm still working on - will post later.

Hi Annette,
Yes that will be my tree with marriage certificate, I couldn't quite understand fathers profession and now you said brewer I can make that out more clearly,
Thank you so much for your help. I was so happy to get the certificate but when it only had fathers name on it I was a little stumped.
Minnie called her daughter Margaret (my grandma) so that might be where the name came from.
Thanks again

I am struggling to find the birth registration of your Minnie in Sheffield. There is one registered Q1 1891, but it looks like she is the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ellen, born 13 Dec 1890 , bapt 21 Jan 1891. Joseph is a greengrocer. Baptism record on FindMyPast. She can be found on 1891 census with her parents in Sheffield.

It looks like the Ann who was 8 on the 1881 census married John Henry Woodhouse on 4 July 1891 at St Judes Hunslet, her father was Thomas a brewer and not recorded as deceased. Ann was 19 at marriage, so looks like her birthday fell between census day and her wedding day. Her address at marriage was 4 Powell Street.

Thomas jnr married Mary Ann Brack on May 9th 1808 at Wrangthorn, father thomas a brewer again no mention of him being deceased. Witnesses were Ann Woodhouse and her husband

Transcribed as Broadbent in 1891

Thomas is married not widowed but Margaret and Minnie not home on census night. The best match for Minnie I have is a birth reg Q2 1890 Bradford district. If you have access to 1939 register she can easily be found there.

If you do a 1911 census address search with the address on Minnie's marriage cert........
-
Thanks for the help, I didn't realise you could search for an actual address on censuses

Clearly, something went wrong with Thomas and Margaret Ann Broadhead's marriage.
I believe that Minnie was born 13/5/1890 and as 1901 and 1911 census show, she was born in Bradford. That said, is her birth the Minnie Broadhead June quarter 1890 Bradford?
Her mother Margaret Ann died as Broadhead - death Mar. qtr. 1919 Holbeck. As to Thomas Broadhead - his age out by 5 years but think his death must be the one bc.1845, Dec.qtr.1900 Hunslet.

In 1901, Margaret is living with John Fallon as his wife but I can't see a marriage, so although she would be widowed by then, maybe he was still married to someone else. Minnie has been entered as Annie on enumerator's book.

Wow thanks ladies you have been amazing.
How would I find her maiden name would I have to buy Minnies birth certificate?
-
I will update my tree with the information you have given me :))

Her parents marriage has already been given: Thomas Broadhead married Margaret Ann Sutton 12/11/1871 South Milford, Yorkshire (her birthplace).

This is most likely Thomas's baptism in 1839

According to the 1939 Register Minnie was born 13/5/1890 and her husband Robert 27/10/1892.
That date makes it look like Minnie was born in Bradford.

I can't find a Thomas Broadhead which fits this one.
In 1901, at 6 Cariss street there is John William Broadhead, wife Frances (nee Howlett) and 1 month old daughter Sarah. Their marriage record is on Ancestry, J W's father is Thomas a brewer. There doesn't seem to be a no 8 and at no 10 is Joseph Needham coal dealer. Could the informant for Thomas's death got a bit confused and got age and occupation wrong or Thomas did a bit of coal dealing on the side. No 10 might have all the wherewithall for that type of business.

If you do a 1911 census address search with the address on Minnie's marriage cert........
Hi Lizzie,
I've tried to do this on ancestry but not had any results. How do you do it? or did you use a different programme?
-
I use FindMyPast which has address search. I have had some success with Ancestry putting street name in the keyword box, but it can give a large number of results.
Others who use Ancestry more for censuses may have better ideas.

Hi All,
I have been re-reading through this thread and trying to make sense of the information.
So it looks like Mgt ann broadhead/Sutton married Thomas broadhead brewer and they had 8 children
1911- says children 6 alive 2 dead.
1901-Mgt was living with a john fallon with only 1 child Minnie (my great grandma).
I'm still unclear about what happened and why mgt would only take 1 of her children with her, maybe Minnie youngest. Still unsure when Thomas died too.
Thanks for your assistance
Jo
