Title: Brown/Batchelor marriage
Post by: Grendonmike on Sunday 25 September 16 20:54 BST (UK)
Looking for marriage of my Great Grandfather Frederick William Brown and my Great Grandmother Eliza Ann Batchelor, probably around 1871 in Cuckfield or Lindfield, Sussex. Found my G. Grandfather in 1871 Census living in Lindfield next door to William Batchelor, Eliza's brother, status unmarried. Eliza in 1871 census is living in Linfield with her mother, status married, she was married previously to Joseph Comber Knight, but he died in 1863.
I next find Frederick and Eliza living together as man and wife in the 1881 census in Cuckfield with son Frederick William Brown, my Grandfather age 9 years and daughter Eliza Jane aged 6 years. In the 1891 census Eliza is still living in Cuckfield at a different address with her two children, status widow. I can find no record of a marriage, or a date of death for her husband. Eliza died in 1897 and I have a copy of her birth certificate. I would appreciate any assistance with finding a marriage and date of death for my G. Grandfather.

Greetings.

Could you clarify (as I'm not sure from your post) what surname Eliza was using on the 1871 census?  Also, what age was Frederick on the 1871/1881 censuses?

All the best
Philip

Hi Phillip,
Eliza uses surname Batchelor in 1871 census, on her death certificate it says Brown was Knight was Batchelor. Frederick age is given as 33 in 1871 census and 43 in 1881 census. This would point to year of birth 1838, both census give place of birth as Huntingdon, but I have been unable to trace details and the first reference to him I can find is in the 1871 census.
Many thanks for reply, hope this information helps.
Regards
Mike

Hi Suz,

Yes you have the correct family in the 1881 census, the daughter is actually Eliza Emma Jane Brown, I knew her as Auntie Ginny and stayed with her in Brighton with my father as a boy. Eliza Ann actually died in 1897 not 1899 at 67 years old, she was born in 1830.

Hi Suz,

Thanks, but I have investigated that person and they were a hotel worker. My Frederick william Brown was a bootmaker.

The "formerly Knight" is interesting, which makes me wonder about this. The ftaher's name and occupation fits

Eliza Ann Batchelor, full age, father Edward Batchelor, blacksmith
Joseph Comber Knight, full age, father Joseph Knight [edit:widower]
Marriage 9 Mar 1857, St Mary Magdalene Old Fish Street

There's one obvious candidate for Joseph, who was b c1814 and dies in 1863. However on the probate register and in 1861 he is listed as a widower.

Interestingly his first wife Mary appears to also have been a Batchelor (and he's from Pulborough originally) and looks to be in Lindfield in 1851

There's a tree on Ancestry that suggests that Mary and Eliza were half sisters - perhaps the marriage was then considered invalid by them, hence them returning to their previous marital states on 1861, but as I can;t find a marriage to Mr Brown, maybe she decided she wasn't sure if she was legally free to marry?

I'd seen an Eliza Batchelor in Brighton in 1861 who I thought was her, but 1851 suggests its not, sorry
