I would love to know where this house was and who lived in it..it was posted in North Ferriby which is an East Yorkshire village not far from Hull. I have tried a Google match without success.
It would be lovely to return this lovely image to it's rightful home with a little help from my friends ;D
THanks for looking.
Carol
-
and the back...it would appear that the sender probaly worked at the house. The address should read Princes Avenue not Princess...It also says..."This is the house and ?????? Can't read the other word.
Carol
-
I can't help you with a location I'm afraid Carol, but wow, that is a lovely house!!!!
-
I really love it and hope it has survived in it's original state Ruskie...I will have to have a ride out to see if I can find it....wouldn't it be great to walk up that drive, knock on the door and say.."This is your house in the early 1900s" ;D
Carol
-
Yes it sure is a lovely house :)
Rosie
-
Is it 'the house and sofie' - maybe the woman was a Sophie :-\
-
Oh yes! Very exciting!!! I am keeping everything crossed that it can be identified and it is still standing (and hopefully it remains as a single dwelling). :)
-
Is it 'the house and sofie' - maybe the woman was a Sophie :-\
Oh yes, that word does look like Sophie (I couldn't work out what it was).
No one called "Sophie" seems to be living in Nth Ferriby in the 1911 census (of course this photo may have been taken elsewhere and the card simply posted in Nth Ferriby), or they may have moved by 1919 ...
-
Is it 'the house and sofie' - maybe the woman was a Sophie :-\
Oh yes...I do believe you are right G. Thanks for that.
Carol
-
There are houses like that in parts of Liverpool Grassendale for example
-
It's a bit like this - now a restaurant - Medici's North Ferriby
https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/01/c4/d5/ae/medici-s-north-ferriby.jpg
Added - don't think so now having looked in more detail :(
-
I was looking on Familysearch 1901 census and there are only 4 Sofie/Sophia/S.A, at North Ferriby. I can't see addresses though. Maybe someone can view the proper census.
Jamjar
-
"North Ferriby is written at the top of the postcard too (as well as being postmarked) implying that the location of the house.
(I only just noticed that :P )

This seems to give the Payne family having a daughter called Ethel - which fits in with the signature on the card. So an Ethel Payne working somewhere .....
-

I think that looks a bit more "Georgian" whereas Carol's house looks Edwardian/Victorian I think.
-
I found this in Humber Road, North Ferriby. You can only see the house through one end of the driveway, though, the other end is obscured by trees
-
I think the sender might be Ellen E Richardson (born 1860 Lincoln) to her sister Harriet Elizabeth PAYNE. (born 1867 Lincoln).
She (Harriet) is living at that address in a "certain year".

Agree, Ruskie - have looked more closely and think Carol's looks more like a Victorian vicarage
-
Have turned this round & looks like part of an address "North Poo?ly"? which may help?
Couldn't resist;
"your loving sister E R"...the Queen ;D

The net is closing in ;D

That is looking really good and in the right area too...thanks for that PC.

I zoomed in as much as poss on PC's house find and it looks a really good match :D
-
I zoomed in as much as poss on PC's house find and it looks a really good match :D
The shape of the door and the detailing over the window is very similar.
-
So the home owner in 1901 was Arthur H. Carver... A cotton Seed Merchant born 1859 in Gibraltar. Living on Southfield Road...There is a Soutfield Drive in North Ferriby so not sure the house is still standing...more searching...
Carol
-
Look at the line of vertical bricks between the window and the door - identical.
-

That looks pretty similar given the time difference doesn't it G...Thanks for that.

PC. I think you've cracked it!
I've just been having a google streetview look around North Ferriby but not had any luck. I went down Humber Road too. :-[
How did you manage to find it?
Is it marked on this map? http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=16&lat=53.7207&lon=-0.5046&layers=171&right=BingHyb
-
Check out Harold North WADE in 1911.
Maureen
-
If I have the numbering right it's 38 Humber Road, North Ferriby.
-
How did you manage to find it?
Google maps. From above first, then had a look on Street View. Left it - and went back for another look! It wasn't obvious...
I was looking for the gable end.
-
I think it's the house marked on the left side of the road beside the "MBER" of HUMBER ROAD:

I was looking for the gable end.
I was trying to track down all the houses named on the map - I can't believe that I was having a look at Marine Cottage a few doors away. :)
Well done. It wasn't easy to find. I'm very happy that it still stands and very nice it still is too. :)

Maureen
Maureen...what a star...thank you so much for all your detective work 8)
Thanks also to everyone who joined in the search...I must take a trip out there now and knock on the door...It would take me all of 15 minutes ;D
Delighted :-*
Carol

Make sure they are interested in the history of the house before you hand over the postcard Carol. If they're not interested it might end up in the bin, in which case you'd be better off keeping it. ;D
Make sure they are the owners too (and not renting). :)
Are you going to write up a little history of the characters from the postcard and the house owners to put it in context?
Good luck. I hope they appreciate it.
Let us know how you get on. :)
Added: Looking at streetview, the house appears to have two bays whereas in the postcard, although hidden behind trees, I can't make out a second bay.
I am also wondering if that house has been divided up into several flats. It is huge. :)
-
Hi Ruskie...Have saved the 1911 census return and will take that along with me. Yes I will make sure that it is wanted and appreciated before I hand it over.
If it was me..I would have it printed onto a canvas and hang it on the wall ;D
Thanks for your help and your interest.
I will let you know how I get on :D
Carol

The line of the other bay can just be seen through the trees at the top of the picture, just left of centre :)
-
Yes if you go slightly overhead you can get a better view of number 40, Humber Road. it is quite secluded from the road.

Ah yes, I see it now. :)

I know who lives in a house like this now... a delighted retired GP and his wife ;D
What a house...what a joy to deliver this lovely image to such an appreciative man...shame his wife was away in York attending a lecture as he said, "She would have been thrilled to sit down and chat over a cup of tea" ;D
There are a lot of original features...lovely tall fireplace and original cornices. The spacious hall with it's curved mahogany balustrade was a delight.
I suggested a place for him to take it to have it printed onto a canvas as it would look amazing in the hall and he was quite taken with the idea.
I took a word doc with a brief history of the house and the sender, and how we discovered the property and it's current location. I added my name and address and he said he would keep the doc with the postcard to show his Son and Daughter who live out of town.
I made that Doctor's day 8)...he took my telephone number and said he would get his wife to ring me when she returned home.
You should all take a little bit of credit in this great outcome...especially Prawncocktail..Job done :-*

What a marvellous result.
Well done again to PC for the initial identification.
-
What a great result from 1st post right through identifying names/places & current owners.
After rooting around
Current owner found
The rootschat way
Made the Dr's day
Just goes to show what can make people smile.
Well done Carol (& RC'rs helpers)
Annie
-
Oh that is excellent news Carol. I'm so pleased!!!
I am a bit jealous that you managed to have a peak inside too - it sounds lovely.
What a great outcome!
-
Thanks Annie and Ruskie...It was a special moment ..there are so many photos out there and not enough of them find their way back home...but this is just one of many that I have had the pleasure of returning...albeit digitally in some cases.
I'm pleased that it hadn't been turned into a Nursing Home or multiple occupancy ;D
Carol
-
Lovely ending (or is it just the beginning?) to the story,Carol. :)
You really went above and beyond the call of duty on this one. So pleased that the photo is "home" and in good hands.
Maureen
-
I'm pleased that it hadn't been turned into a Nursing Home or multiple occupancy ;D
Carol
I agree. That was my concern when I saw how big the house was.
I feel very relieved and very happy that it has retained it's integrity. ;D
-
Who knows,
Story might find it's way to the local press? ;D
Then we will be inundated with "Picture Puzzles" ;D
Annie
-
;D ;D ;D...Stranger things have happened Annie...I wonder if his Grandchildren will read my letter and the postcard in years to come and think of the search to find the property as "primitive" ;D ;D
If they ever move...I hope they leave the postcard and letter with the house!!!
Carol

.......................................I hope they leave the postcard and letter with the house!!!
Carol
Talking of which, my son and his partner have just bought a house and there is a photograph of it from when it was first built over a hundred years ago, the photo has stayed with the house each time it has had a change of owner, the original owner had it wrote into the first sale agreement that that was how it should be whenever the property changed ownership.
Frank.
-
Thanks guys....I couldn't have done without the great Rootschat team who always step up to the plate ;)
That's a great story Frank...I hope the Doctor and his family apply the same principle when the house is sold on.
Carol
-
This is an update for those who have been following this topic:
The Doctor's wife...also a Doctor, rang today and we had a lovely chat and I took her email address and have forwarded a scanned copy for her to send to their Son and Daughter who grew up in the house.
By coincidence...the previous owners contacted the current owners earlier this year, to ask if they could visit the house to take photographs of a willow tree that they had planted in the garden in the early 1970s, in memory of their Grandmother. They visited the house on the anniversary of her death.
They intend to contact them and forward a copy of the house so they will then have one too.
Carol
-
:) It just gets better and better.
Maureen
-
This story no doubt will be told many times amongst Family members Maureen...I know how I would feel if it happened to me :D
It costs so little to spread a little happiness.
Carol
-
Oh that's lovely Carol! I bet the previous owners wished they'd never sold now. ;)
-
"Feelgood Thread" :)
Frank.
-
Great detective work by 'PrawnCocktai ', Lovely house!! - but when I see houses like that, I think either someone has a great love vac'ing or wonder where Mrs Mop the daily help (Char) lives. ;D ;D ;D
-
Check out Harold North WADE in 1911.
Maureen
Hi Maureen and all the those who joined in the search...I have just sent a copy of the postcard and the reverse to a relative of Harold North Wade and he is delighted. I also included a link to this post so that he can see how, with the help of Rootschatters, Prawn Cocktail in particular, helped in the search to find the house and brought us to a positive identification. Maybe Steve will become a member ;D
I now need to find the family of Ellen E. and Harriet E. Richardson and spread a little more happiness ;D
Carol
-
Congratulations and well done PC 🤗🤗🤗.
Carol you lucky person visiting that beautiful house. You could have organised a coach trip for everybody ;D
-
Thanks...Yes that would have been fun ;D...can you imagine all the Rootschatters standing there on the drive with a postcard of the house taken over 100 years ago!!! Tea and cucumber sandwiches on the terrace ;D
Carol
-
Haven't been on RC in a while and just happened on this thread. How marvellous!!
Yes, please organize a coach trip! We can have our cucumber sandwiches and then go plodging in the Humber at the end of the road. How about May...the water should have warmed up a little by then ;D

Carol

..you can bring OH so that he can visit his old stomping ground ;D
Carol
Okay! We'll meet you in the Old White Harte :D
-
Very spooky - I was thinking about this thread and the house in the last week or two.
I think this has to be one of the most rewarding “mystery house” searches on several levels -: Carol was able to personally give this wonderful postcard to it’s current owners, the owners were very appreciative, and the house still stands and is loved and cared for!
The interest continues and more people are seeing the image. ;D
Added: yes, more postcards of unknown locations please Carol. :D

Ye Olde White Harte....been in there a few times...I'll meet you in the plotting parlour where Sir John Hotham plotted to bar Charles 1st from entering the town which signalled the beginning of the English Civil War!
See you there ;D

I was cleaning up my computer and came across the image and it brought back memories of the time I went to the House. So I decided to find relatives of the Wade family.
I got a lot of pleasure from passiing the postcard on with the help of everyone on here Who all did their bit.
I must have a look for another one ;D

Yes please Carol. ;D

Yes please from me too Carol ;D ;D

Wonderful news,Carol.
