Title: 1937 (Irwin RUSSELL'S)? GARAGE Coronation celebration 20 Dove Lane, Bristol
Post by: 001uk on Thursday 29 September 16 08:13 BST (UK)
Hello!

Any ideas please as to the location of this

1937 Coronation street scene celebration with RUSSELL GARAGE ?

No doubting the date of this unlocated view! Inscription reads: "Coronation of King George VI, May 12. 1937. Fear GOD.......". Street scene, on slight incline, with row of terraced Georgian properties. On the right is long building with corrugated iron roofing on which is a sign reading: "RUSSELL GARAGE". Includes Car Hire, Light Vans. Other words I can't make out.

Having looked again there appears to be a smaller "s" after RUSSELL making the garage RUSSELL'S GARAGE

Anyone agree?!

There was a RUSSELL'S GARAGE in Dove Lane, Newfoundland Road, BRISTOL.

✔ CONFIRMED! Irwin RUSSELL 20 Dove Lane, BRISTOL

With thanks to everyone for their help~001uk

Thanks Roger.
Took a Street View look and don't think it's Chatham.Medway St has by the look of it had some redevelopment but it looks too "Towny" whereas my photo looks more of a residential area......Hope the flu jab was in the right area.

Whitby?

Thanks Jamjar.
Took a Street View look and I'm afraid I couldn't see any matching buildings. Also the Whitby business was Russell Brothers which I think would have been on my photo's building.

ShaunJ thank you. It's a VERY long road! and an A road at that. My photo is more (I think) a back street, but I'll take a closer Street View look.

More Russell's Garages in the 1930's papers:

Violet Street, Tynemouth
Haywood Street, Leek

Couldn't find Violet St but did find Wm Russell at Tynemouth Place but like the Leek location didn't find similar buildings but stand corrected!

Thanks.

Apologies - Russell's Garage in Tynemouth was NOT in Violet Street (that was a juxtaposition of advertisements which I read incorrectly). Searching for more information on this one.....

Here's a 1949 photo of the one in Chatham. That could be a newish building, perhaps replacing what was there in the 1930's. http://www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=9413.msg64206#msg64206

The Tynemouth one was at 1 Tynemouth Road.

Checked one of my Kelly's directories (1934) and Wm RUSSELL was listed at Tynemouth Place Tynemouth (but doesn't match the area).

Having looked again there appears to ne a smaller "s" after RUSSELL making the garage RUSSELL'S GARAGE

I am now wondering IF it could be BRISTOL

I think Tynemouth Place may have been where Wiliam Russell lived. If you take ShaunJ's 1 Tynemouth Road,(just beyond a current Kwik Fit garage at nos. 5-7) the properties look Georgian to me  e.g. Tynemouth Terrrace, which might vaguely fit a viewpoint.Worth a quick second look at least.

I think the bottom left of the sign says "..day and night service.."

Not sure there were any railings on Dove Lane, Bristol?

1900's street map doesn't show anything commercial.
1946 aerial shots are blurred ::)
1949 shows a paper company on both sides of the lane - but Bristol was extensively bombed in WW2.

Thanks for your suggestion. The Directory I used was a commercial (Trade) version so it would list the business and not a private residence! I looked around the area inc. KwikFit and I don't think the style of buildings matched.
The buildings (on the left) in the Russell's Garage card are very similar to those of Bristol.

I've now had the location confirmed as 20 Dove Lane BRISTOL. One Irwin RUSSELL.
