Snap of my mum and me enjoying the beach. It would have been taken in 1952 and I think it would have been in or around Lancashire. The stonework may be recognisable to a sharpeyed person. All suggestions welcome.

What is it above the fence on the left? A long row of swings? A primitive rollercoaster? A sewage pipe?
-
From memory (without searching, yet) I would propose Southport.
-
There is a Miniature Lakeside railway near the Marine lake at Southport and that style of concrete fencing is used in that area of the resort.

It may be part of the Pier.

Can you post a link then SB?

I live in Southport and it doesn't look like any of the present walls by the beach. The miniature railway was quite a way from the beach edge even in the 50s. The angle to the pier if that is what in the background looks wrong too. However I have access to a lot of old photos of the area so will have a look at them over the weekend.
-
Looks like an over head tram structure - are those railings not in the Bispham area - ???
Sandra
Can't find a section of fencing nearer the beach area - but this is the type of fencing in that area in the 1950's - although this is more recent than that.
-
I decided to through the photos so far done 2 boxes and a large album.there only seems to be one area which would give the right angle for the photo but I don't think the concrete fencing is right for the area but I will check it tomorrow if I have time.
Added20.10 now been through a box of Southport PCs with no success.

Yes. That is my second alternative. Somewhere between Bispham and Fleetwood. I have spent an hour trawling through images of Southport and am unable to find evidence, sorry.
I think its called pre-cast concrete
-
I have spent a lot of time on the Fylde Coast, I am sure that Sandra is correct about the Tram line between Blackpool and Fleetwood. have a look at
www.thetrams.co.uk/blackpool
-
Perhaps Bispham is slightly to high and not nearer enough to the beach as the original photograph shows ???
-
Is it between "Little Bispham" and Cleveleys do you think?
-
I am open to the fact I could be wrong SB and Sandra , but I live on the Fylde and it's not something that I've ever seen, either by picture or when I was younger. :(
-
What about Morecambe ? it's a bit flatter than Blackpool
-
You could be right Claire, Bispham was an initial thought but then looked a little to high on some other picture I found, must be a bit of a hill down to the next level and then the shore.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I might see if I can find other photos taken at the time which might have other information in them. At present, the photos are only roughly sorted. I need a whole extra me to just concentrate on family history and photo archiving. ;)

OH does not remember railings like that at Morecambe in the 1950's.
Looking at online photo's of Morecambe they are mostly metal railings

I live in Morecambe and do not recognise anywhere like this
It seems to be more round the Blackpool area, if you go on Google earth and follow the tramline along the promenade from Blackpool towards Bispham area, there seems to be quite a few areas with fencing similar to the one on the photo the other side of the tram line.

That photo is the Marine Lake in Southport and the miniature railway is on the far side and a still a long way from the beach.
As I said last night I trawled through an extensive photographic collection belonging to a local history society which I store and found nothing resembling the fence in the picture. I did go and look near the Lakeside Miniature Railway and the precast concrete slabs are laid horizontally as they are by Pleasureland and nothing like those in the original photo.

I've done a cybercrawl along the coast without success. I think I'll have to find more photos and hope for clearer landmarks to solve this one.
Thanks to everyone. I am always amazed at the helpful people on this site.

MiniHistory,
Great shot of your Mum and yourself.
It could well be worth posting a scan of that photograph on the Photo Restoration Board to see if anybody can do their wonders on it.
I've done a little bit of editing to sharpen you both up a little, just to give you an idea.
All the best,
Trystan

It could be south of Southport, somewhere like Ainsdale or Freshfield, near the holiday camp

I was born in Lancashire in 1949, so know the seaside resorts quite well.
In my memory it looks familiar. Did you ever stay at a holiday camp? It could be enclosed within Butlins perhaps?
Did you ever go to Rhyl or Prestatyn?
-
I'm fairly certain there's no fencing like that on Ainsdale beach just dunes one side and there would be other buildings visible on the other side. When I'm passing I'll check.
Is there another photo taken around the same time that perhaps could be identified which would help? I've just been sorting 1950s photos and discovered some had numbers on the back which helped me get them together and others it was the very faint paper name on the back which helped.

That's terrific! Thank you!

Unfortunately, I don't know. I don't think our family went in for holiday camps but I could be wrong. I shall have to ask around.

There are so many photos but if I keep an eye out for seaside ones I might spot something taken at the same time. Here's hoping!
