I believe I have tried Australian websites including the National Archives of Australia and UK sites including The National Archives in search of the Ship surgeon's journal for the convict voyage of the HMS Tortoise from England to Australia 1841-1842. Does anyone know if such a journal still exists and if yes, where it can be accessed?
Many thanks

audrey69,
Many "main Libraries' hold what is called the AJCP..ships logs are held with them. Also have you looked at https://www.linc.tas.gov.au/family-history/Pages/default.aspx may be something on there.
cheers

Are you particularly interested in one of the convicts here?

Thanks for both suggestions which I've already visited/tried. Yes, I am interested in one convict on board but am particularly interested in trying to find out if the surgeon's journal still exists and whether it has any further info on the journey and more specifically on my convict.

The General Introduction is at Part 1.
There are holdings in public libraries and archives across Australia and elsewhere, including Britain.
The UK National Archives has the collection. Admiralty Records are at Part 7.

Have you looked in "Log of Logs" (all 3 vols) compiled by Ian Nicholson ?
These books detail "a catalogue of logs, journals, diaries...... for Australia and New Zealand and surrounding oceans" 1788 - 1993.
From memory, he tells where the item can be found.
Look in all three as, if he found extra info for an already published ship, he repeated and added in subsequent vols.

Thanks for suggestions everyone. I've tried the archives already and there is no listing for the ship HMS Tortoise. I've tried ancestry again and can find no listing for ship's surgeons journals. Am I missing a step?
Thanks
