Title: thomas fraser
Post by: lyndsey86 on Wednesday 12 October 16 20:41 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on a Thomas Fraser, he married Ann Fraser, don't has his age or marriage date but they were born and married in this area. They had a son John who was born about 1875, he married Helen Cushnie, on the 1901 census John was aged 26 years, it looks like from the census return he was born Westlis, but I can't be sure. I have had 1901 census rescanned but it isn't much clearer. John and Helen are buried in Mitchell Hill Cemetery, Dingwall. I have tried looking on s/p website at 1891,1881 census also looked on Ancestry.

Hi

Just a thought - could it be Resolis, which is on the Black Isle, north east of Dingwall?

Maybe you could put a snip of it up here.

Are you sure the John Fraser on the 1901 is your John?  As there is an entry for a John Fraser, born December 1874 at Resolis to a William and Margaret Fraser  :-\

Added - there is also a birth of a John Fraser , Dingwall, 6 May 1874 to an Ann Fraser.

Does like Resolis doesn't it, Gadget.

Ann, what did it say on John's marriage entry regarding his father Thomas?

Just adding this index entry from 1874 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ6P-6Z6  Always the possibility that parents were unmarried.

Monica  :)

ADDED: Yep, that is what I was thinking too. Can't see a Thomas and Ann, except some earlier births for Thomas and Ann (Holmes).

Think we cross posted, Monica. I was looking at that one too as the Resolis one doesn't seem to fit.

Some family trees have Helen Cushnie as still single in 1901 http://person.ancestry.co.uk/tree/11242468/person/13652488139/facts

The marriage looks to be in Dingwall in 1905, with Helen showing as Nellie on the index.

What age was given for him at marriage, Gadget? He died in July 1959 according to his MI http://gravestones.rosscromartyroots.co.uk/picture/number11305.asp

I have found the 1's you are mentioning, I do know that Ann's maiden name was Fraser. Also know that John and Helen married 1905. As you said in your reply her name was recorded as Nellie. I at the moment don't have credits to view John's birth.

Hi Ann

Gadget and I started working off the 1901 census entry that you mentioned in your first post. Looks like that is not connected to John given he didn't marry Helen until 1905. It is the 1911 census that is relevant for him to try to confirm his birth place. Have you got this entry?

The 1881 census shows that the Resolis John is definitely not the correct John.

Blarblair, Resolis  - parents William and Margaret.

I have the 1911 census for John and Helen, it states they were born Rosshire, Dingwall. Address 3 Clare Place, Dingwall.

Just following up on that possible 1875 birth with just mother Ann Fraser. I thought this might be her and young John with her father in 1880:

Thomas Fraser 60 farm lab b. Kilmorack G, Inverness
Ann Fraser 35 daughter Out Door Farm Worker b. Kilmorack G, Inverness
John Fraser 10 grandson b. Kiltearn
John Fraser 3 grandson b. Kiltearn

Address: Clyne Rd. Clyne, Kiltearn, R&C

Maybe this John in 1901:

John Fraser 26 b. Kiltearn working as a Groom (domestic) at Coach Stables Rosehaugh, Avoch, R&C.
Thought this occupation may connect with what you mentioned Gadget from the 1905 cert, where John showed as a coachman.

Monica

Added: Think I am mixing up two potential births. There is the one from 1874 in Dingwall with just mother Ann Fraser indexed above.  There is also one for a John from Kiltearn, a possible birth entry in Kiltearn in 1877.

I have downloaded the birth for 1874, for John and Mum's name Ann. I am trying to help a relative who is overseas, need to see if they think it could be him.

Just looked at the 1959 death record for John, (aged 81).  No father named. Mother is Ann Fraser (deceased). No maiden surname given. Informant was his son in law - signature difficult to read but looks like A Shepherd.

The 1877 birth entry has John born 31 July 1877, Mountgerald, Kiltearn. Mother was Ann Fraser, Housekeeper. Informant ws Ann Fraser.. Entry states illegitimate after his name.

Let me have your e-mail via PM and I can send the entries.

Hi All

Might this be the 1891 census for the family identified in 1881 and 1891 by Monica?

Address Clyne

Ann Fraser 42 b Kilmorack Retired landress (as transcribed)
John Fraser son 20 Coachman domestic servant b Kiltearn
Gordon Fraser son 13 scholar b Kiltearn

Might Gordon have been (mistakenly?) shown as John in the 1881 census?
