Title: Lennon and Burns Family in Monaghan
Post by: BBaxter on Friday 14 October 16 20:24 BST (UK)
Hello,

Thank you for this forum. Always most grateful for help. Looking for info on my 2nd Great Grandmother, Catherine Burns. Could this be Monaghan, Castleshane in census trascript?

Where born:
Monagan Casth Slens, Ireland

Her mother was Rose Lennen and father Henry Burns. Catherine Burns married James Paterson and I find them both in Scotland census.

Are the surnames Lennen and Burns from Monaghan? Thank you very much, Barbara

What do Scottish census records give for her place of birth? if she was alive in 1911 that census may list a more exact place- or is that where you got "Monagan Casth Slens, Ireland"? if so, you need to look at the original image rather than a transcript.

You haven't given any indication of when she was born. If before 1864 there will be no birth certificate so you'll need to search for church records to see if there's a baptismal record.

Thank you,

Catherine Burns was born in 1835. The 1871 Scotland census had:  Where born
Monagan Casth Slens, Ireland

All the other census just say Ireland so this is the only clue to narrow it down.  Castleshane seemed closest guess but you are right I may have to go for the original. She died in 1896 so no luck with later census. Thank you very much, Barbara

Unfortunately she was born well before the start of birth registration and not all church records go back that far it may be difficult to find her family in Ireland.

If she was Catholic you can see what church records are online-

You need to look at the ORIGINAL record on Scotland's People- not another transcription.

Monagass(not sure yet) Castle,
Clare,
Ireland.
Might just be me but I can't see Monaghan on that at all.

I shall watch with interest.

You're only allowed to post a small portion for deciphering purposes.

I think it says Monagan [Monaghan] Castle blanie [Castleblayney].

Thank you very much!
Monagan [Monaghan] Castle blanie [Castleblayney] seems close. (sorry for posting large file)
Catherine Burns did have brothers and sisters so maybe I can go sideways in her tree and find some clues. So far their place of birth only turns up Ireland for them so this 1871 census for Catherine is a major clue.
Thank you again for all the help, Barbara
