I am searching for info on my 2nd great grandfather and his spouse
Family info and other records indicate he was born about 1790 in County Cavan, Ireland. I have no info on parents.
He died either onboard ship or near arrival in Canada JUNE 18, 1845 and is buried at Grosse-Ile, Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada. There is a memorial there with his name and the many others who died during crossing or on arrival.
He was married to a Susan or Susannah who was born about 1791 in County Cavan, Ireland . She passed in Moore Township, Ontario, Canada 22 SEPT 1865
The had the following children all listed as born in County Cavan.
Mary Ann Holmes 1811–1881
Margaret Holmes 1816–
Thomas Holmes 1819–1895
John Holmes 1821–
David Holmes 1825–1902
William Holmes 1825–1894
Andrew Holmes 1830–1896
I have a fair bit of detail after the arrival of the family (the came in several groups) but have hit a wall around the family in Ireland
Any assistance greatly appreciated

Hi David,
As the family went to Canada before 1845, I looked in the Tithe Records and this is the list.
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=holmes&firstname=&county=Cavan&parish=&townland=&search=Search
As you can see the rent/tax payers names David, Cecil and George.
The only Andrew Holmes in the Tithe records was in County Mayo.
If Catholic you could try,

What I did find was that Andrew b 1790 his father was Andrew (b 1730) and Mother was Jean Graham (b 1734) and His Father was Nathaniel (b 1690) in Coleraine, County Antrim and Mother was Janet Hunter (b 1692) Two of Nathaniel's children went to the USA.

Not sure if there's much basis in fact as numerous internet posts list Nathaniel Holmes from Coleraine Co. Antrim, etc. Here's one example-

Of course, Coleraine is NOT in County Antrim ::)
Another one just as bad-

Suddenly realized that death record at Gros Ile has his age as 71 which would make his birth about 1774 NOT 1790 as originally thought

Hi
Griffiths Valuation (a census substitute) was carried out in Cavan in 1856/57.
There are six Holmes listed, three bearing the christian-names David, John and William, which were names used by Andrew when naming his sons. See link below:-

Might be worth checking these areas.
Cheers

Doing some reorganization of old documents and I noticed something I had overlooked.
An old typewritten family tree/history lists Andrew Holmes as passing in 1847 but records seem to indicate 16 JUN 1845 at Grosse-Ile, Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada as noted earlier. I assume the dates on the typewritten document were based on possibly less accurate sources.
The more unusual item from that document was his wife. We always has as
Susan (Susannah) born about 1791 County Cavan. The document lists a "Margaret Lowther ? c1796-c1860".
We have Susan (Susannah) passing in Lambton County 22 SEPT 1865 which fits other documents.
Is there possibly two Andrew Holmes of a similar age? We know son Andrew born about 1830 was alive and married to Mary Ross.
In a later booklet published by descendant F.M. Emerson Holmes b 2 Dec 1909-1999 Susan is listed as Andrew's spouse and birth year 1787. Various Canadian records have Susan's birth as various years between 1786 and 1796.
