Title: Seeking Cowen Family Information - Helmsley 1700s
Post by: rbell35 on Sunday 23 October 16 06:50 BST (UK)
Seeking any information about the Cowen family of Helmsley during the 1700s. My ancestor George Cowen was possibly the one born in 1767 son of John Cowen. I am interested in finding which John Cowen, who his wife was & what employment he was involved in? I believe George had a sister Elizabeth who married a James Barker in Helmsley in 1789. The couple produced a child in London in 1790. George made it to London and married Ann Kinloch in 1798. One of the witnesses was a James Barker! According to another researcher a check of the 2 Barker signatures reveals they are very simillar!  I am keen to ensure the Helmsley link is correct. Perhaps one of my distant Cowen relatives may see this & respond?? Any information is much appreciated. Thanks Rob

There is a baptism record for a Elizabeth and John Cowen on the 25th June 1771 son and daughter of John Cowen Helmsley.

There is also a baptism record for a Margaret Cowen Helmsley in 1775 and then a Robert Cowen 1768 both children of John

Thanks Lisa it certainly seems like the same family. Does it state what occupation the father has? Cheers Rob

Hi all which records should I consult to find out John Cowan's employment? Seems the baptismal entries for his children are not very productive in this regard! Any help here is much appreciated. Thanks Rob
