Evening all
I have a Mary Jane Corcoran marrying William Gray in 1926 at Taghmon in Westmeath. Would some kind soul be able to assist with a birth year or baptism for her?

online records don't cover dates required... http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0962

Father was John, have you looked for them in census?
Image, so others don't have to go looking for it..
-
I've had a look but nothing jumps out at me.
One of the witnesses to the marriage could be a Leslie Corcoran, it is rather faint though. No luck with him either.

Theres a 9 year old Maggie Corcoran, born Dublin in Rathconnell in the 1911 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Westmeath/Castle/Rathconnell/885140/
and a 1902 birth for a Margaret Corcoran in Dublin - father is John Corcoran, a labourer
-
So searching for Corcoran births with MMN Howard gives me
Margaret 23/08/1902
Kate 23/07/1906
Elizabeth 13/08/1904
and two female unknowns/unnamed - 04/07/1900 and 10/09/1908
Is Mary one of the unknowns, I wonder, and could Lillie be Elizabeth?

I hope no one minds if I bring this thread back up again.
I am having trouble figuring out what Andrew Corcoran's wife Jane's maiden name is.
On familysearch there are various interpretations. Will post a link in a second - need to shorten the URL.
Whatever it is I am having trouble finding a marriage for the pair which might solve the problem (or then again, maybe not!)
Could someone help?
-
Familysearch link with all those surname variations for Jane
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01je2/
-
Why not two different Andrews.
The Guckavan birth has a Rathconnell address
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1870/03345/2226472.pdf
But I can't find a marriage.
Haven't found the Mary Jane birth, pity it doesn't give the parish on FamilySearch.
-
Think this is Mary Jane, she's indexed as Mary - parish is Rathconnell and this time MMN is Cook
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01je6/
-
Ah I see, all have the same address,
So the question is did the Registar mishear the surname on Mary Jane's birth.
Guckavan is an unusual surname, I would think it's less likely to be a mistake as the Registar would no doubt have asked her to repeat it or spell it. On the John birth Andrew is down as a pensioner, that is more than likely an army pension, do you know if Mary Jane's father served with the Army?
-
To be honest, Sinann, I didn't even notice that!
I've no idea, unfortunately - is there anything online that I could search?
-
Found their marriage :)
April 1869 in Mullingar parish register - she's transcribed as Guckevan

I don't see a Civil Cert.
So the trick now would be to find Mary Jane's baptism.

Last one on the first page you taken to if you select November 1872, I think - although says October .....

I was looking at that baptism last night but got distracted and didn't post it, only looking at it now I remembered.

John, second from bottom
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635198#page/130/mode/1up
has a different address,
Need to find Michael to make sure they moved.
-
Are you able to work out the place they were living for Mary's baptism? I've peered at it, but no idea!
-
Oh so annoying Michael top of page
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635199#page/70/mode/1up
Still I think it's the same family, her surname is too unusual for it not to be.

Think it's Ballagh, I have a look around at that.
-
There is a Ballagh in the Civil Parish of Mullingar.
https://www.johngrenham.com/c_parish/c_parish_main.php?civilparishid=2487&county=&civilparish=Mullingar
There are 6 Civil Parishes in the RC Parish of Mullingar.

-
Just found Michael myself, you beat me to it posting!
It does seem to be an incredibly rare surname, even the priests and registrars look to have struggled with it.
-
I'd never hear of it before and it doesn't get a result on John Graham's Surname index
If you put it into Irish Genealogy it only get results in 4 districts with 11 results. That said I'd say it's spelt incorrectly a lot.
-
I was trying to figure out why their marriage isn't coming up on the Civil Certs so checked the marriages near them.
The one above them Thomas Tuite is there.
Andrew's and Hugh Connor is missing.
Malachy Scott is there.
It looks like the priest sent in the March marriages and when it came to send in April's he started at the top of the page Malachy is on and missed the two on the end of the previous page.
-
::) oh dear!
-
Thanks for all your help, Sinann :)
-
When the images of those marriages come online you can check the Tuite and Scott ones and see what else is on the page, usually all the marriages from one church are all together.
Of course you would expect Mullingar Parish would have several churches If this is a central register and not an individual church register it may be that one church is missing from the Civil certs that month or it is as I said and they missed two marriages.
-
Thanks for all your help, Sinann :)
Your welcome, it was fun and passed a quite night at work.
